We celebrated our granddaughter's high school graduation with a trip to Orcas Island where we stayed at Otters Pond Bed and Breakfast. What a treat! We stayed in the Goldfinch Room and our daughter and granddaughter stayed in the Hummingbird Room. Both were excellent but I'll only describe ours. It was terrific -- spacious, two comfortable armchairs, a bathroom with two sinks separated by a good size glass table, extremely quiet, a fireplace. Who could ask for more? We got more! Amanda Zimlich, the proprietor, is a professional chef who's made a career change to innkeeper, and she prepares the breakfasts. Each day there's a main course (frittata with smoked salmon, blueberry blintzes, baked oatmeal as examples) plus a freshly baked treat such as mango turnover, blueberry muffin (which my husband pronounced the best he'd ever had and there was no disagreement) -- get the picture? Plus coffee, tea, espresso drinks, juice. And all served in a lovely, comfortable dining/living/kitchen room overlooking Otters Pond. Anyone with a special interest in birds would especially enjoy staying here -- the pond attracts hundreds of species. We hope to make an annual visit to Orcas Island, just to stay here.

My husband and I stayed here last week and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Although new to the B & B business, our host, Amanda is a natural for the job. She was happy to answer my many questions and accommodate our schedule. Being a professional chef, the breakfasts were excellent. She did many extra touches that made us feel at home, such as afternoon snacks and wine opener with glasses set out for use if desired. The home and grounds were beautiful with a great location. We enjoyed sitting on the deck and using the hot tub. Welcoming and friendly atmosphere. Highly recommended.

Otters Pond Bed and Breakfast has officially become one of my favorite places to stay! From the amazing food in the morning to the gorgeous quiet view of the pond, it’s proximity to Moran state park and the wonderful owners it checks all the boxes on the quiet getaway list. The Inn itself is quiet, right down to the silent heating and cooling system Carl and Sue had installed. They are also incredibly accommodating of different allergens and preferences. They have even perfected the gluten free pancake! Carl and Sue are also a fount of knowledge about the best restaurants and the different activities that are available. Once you’ve decided what you want to do they’ll even help make the reservation! The room when I arrived, was wonderful and for me the crowning touch oddly enough was the pack of makeup remover wipes and cute little towel to use with them in the bathroom. I’m sure you can guess by my excitement exactly which item I always seem to forget to pack. This was my second visit here and when my friends found out that I had slipped away for the weekend, well, they have demanded that I take them with me the next time, so I shall be planning my next excursion in the very near future. I personally highly recommend staying here. Especially if you’re looking for a quiet place to rest and relax.

This is a wonderful B&B on Orcas with a great deck in the back overlooking the pond. It gets great afternoon sun and is perfect for watching birds or just soaking up the ambience. We had the small room off the main house, which was perfect for us. Very quiet. Breakfast will keep you full most of the day.

Maybe this was a nice place once: the rooms are clean, the bedding excellent, the neighborhood quiet. If only it felt the least bit friendly or welcoming! I suspect that, over the years, the owners have become sick of the whole thing, and it shows. Our arrival set the tone: I never consider it a good sign when you have to pay the bill, in full, before the owner will offer you so much as a glass of water or a chance to use a restroom. Furthermore, she had to give us all the house rules (it went on and on) and maps and traveler's tips immediately, because that suited her convenience, never mind that we were tired or uncomfortable from a long journey. (When we asked for a few minutes to freshen up first, she made it clear she'd be unavailable until the next morning.) And her ironclad rule about removing your shoes indoors can make it very awkward to bring your stuff inside. Breakfast was tasty but hardly unique, or overly generous; if you're an early riser, waiting until nine isn't really worth it. We thought we'd be able to walk around the pond before breakfast and do some birding, but the pond is really a marsh, there are no paths or walks on the property, and the birding seems oversold; I didn't see any birds at those feeders that don't come to mine in Portland. If you like sleeping in, and the location suits you, and you don't mind being in the hands of a control freak, then I guess this place is fine. But we felt it was somewhat overpriced, with an unfriendly vibe and the merits of breakfast and birding both exaggerated.
