The Fife and Drum Inn garners appreciation for its prime location close to dining and historical attractions, with guests often praising the easy access to William & Mary. The inn's cleanliness and charming theme decor resonate with travelers, who enjoy the cozy atmosphere and spotless rooms. While the staff's professionalism and the availability of round-the-clock snacks are highlights, some guests feel the inn could improve its value by addressing extra costs and offering a more substantial breakfast. Room size and signs of wear are mentioned, yet the overall cleanliness and decor often leave a positive impression.

Fife and Drum is the definition of the word Bed and Breakfast. Their rooms are well maintained and the hostess greats you at breakfast offering advice and guidance on the restaurants and things to do. The location is near the center of activity will all major sites and the best restaurants within walking distance. Your parking space is reserved and is very close to the Inn. The rooms have private baths that are well maintained and easily accessible. Breakfast is continental with a wide variety of selections. Stay here for the best Williamsburg experience.

We had the good fortune of staying two nights in the spacious Cedar’s Suite. The extra space, ridiculously comfortable bed, and access to the porch was an unanticipated gift in that a torrential downpour pretty much claimed our first day and night in Williamsburg. The suite created space for us to unwind, relax, and stay dry. Breakfast consisted of yogurt, homemade muffin tops, homemade granola, boiled eggs, bottomless coffee and a wide assortment of hot teas. We ventured out into Colonial Wiilliamsburg with great advice from the owners, both lifelong residents of Williamsburg.

We parked our car in one of the Inn’s dedicated spots when we first arrived and never moved the vehicle until we checked out. The location of the Fife & Drum Inn is second only the accommodations it provides. Some of the finest restaurants, and shops, in Williamsburg are literally a stones throw away from the Inn. You can step out of the front door and leisurely walk over the heart of Merchants square within 2-3 minutes. The primary entrance to William & Mary is even closer.

We’ve been fortunate to stay in a small handful of properties, centrally located in popular destinations. The owners/managers of those properties would benefit from a stay in this charming Inn. Billy and Sharon Scruggs have created a gem on Prince George Street, in the heart of Colonial Williamsburg. We recommend the Fife and Drum Inn without hesitation and we’re eager to return as soon as possible.

Probably the best thing about owning this Inn is the wonderful guests we can host on their visits to Williamsburg. We really enjoyed sharing all of the special things to do right out of our front door with you. It was especially a joy to speak with you on the many things we discussed. We will look forward to your return very soon.

The Fife &Drum Inn was booked by my husband as a Christmas gift to me. It's location was great for walking to anywhere in downtown Williamsburg and a short drive to both Jamestown and Yorktown. The room was comfortable and nicely decorated with clever pieces like a clawfoot tub in the sitting area and a tv placed in a type of birdhouse. The bathroom was clean and had all necessary amenities. Breakfast was great both days, and staff was friendly and helpful, especially with suggestions for what to see and things to do. We will definitely be staying again!

We stay at numerous B&B. One thing you really look forward to is the breakfast. We all know that things have changed due to coronavirus but this has gone beyond safety. They have gone cheap. Instead of the buffet breakfast we expected we were told due to safety standards we would get a continental breakfast. Well Motel 6 it was. A muffin TOP , boxed cereal and coffee. No precautions were made as to glassware, coffee cups, ice containers etc We were told that restaurants on the street had great breakfast. Yes they did and it cost of $25 plus a day for tow of us. We were told due to safety standards rooms would not be cleaned during your stay. One more cheap way of not doing much of anything for the extra dollars you pay for B&B. It is a perfect location but since it is over the storefronts, there are many steps leading up to the B&B. Wifi was also lacking. We were one of the closest rooms to the office and most often my phone would tell me that wifi was too slow to load.

Our first concern is for the safety of our guests and our staff. We have made it a priority to inform all guests of changes (due to the pandemic) in advance of their stay. We emailed this information, to these guests, prior to the visit. Due to federal and state guidelines, we determined it best to suspend our buffet breakfast. We initially attempted to plate food individually from the kitchen. Our small kitchen will not accommodate that type of service. In addition, it would require having guests reserve a specific time to eat, which is not always practical. As we stated in the email prior to the visit, to compensate for the difference in breakfast offered, the rate was reduced by $30 per night. As we are making this transition, we appreciate all suggestions about our breakfast offerings. This is the first negative response we have received. We will continue to ask our guests how we might satisfy their breakfast expectations within the parameters we are currently working with. In terms of sanitization, we have provided sanitized place settings, two to a table. When I pointed this out to this guest, she said she did not want to dirty our dishes and proceeded to eat off the bare table. We feel many guests prefer to know their room is sanitized in advance and that there is no opportunity for contamination throughout their stay. We informed this guest at check-in, we would not be freshening or entering their rooms except by their request. Our Cox internet service is an extremely high speed and it is available throughout the inn. It is most unusual that we experience any issues with it. Had the guest let me know at the time it is most likely we could have corrected any problems experienced. We are in the process of updating our web site and other sites that list us to make sure the breakfast offering is listed correctly. Having thousands of satisfied guests over the last 20 years we want to make sure no one feels deceived. We will continue to offer the high standards of atmosphere, amenities, and environment our guests have come to expect. We are terribly sorry we were not able to meet these guests’ expectations.

After reading numerous reviews on different lodging choices around Williamsburg, I like what I read about the Fife & Drum. I contacted Billy, and he was so nice and informative about the area.

Check in was a breeze, and parking was close and easy. Billy greeted us as soon as we walked in the door, gave us bottles of water, asked about our trip and gave us recommendations for drinks and dinner.

Our room was clean, and definitely large enough for the two of us. I loved the way it was decorated. The bathroom was HUGE! The shower looked like it had recently been renovated, was all tile and had a corner seat. There was a sink right outside the shower, and I loved that the toilet was in a separate area with a door.

I will definitely recommend the Fife and Drum to anyone staying in the Williamsburg area. You can walk to everything in Colonial Williamsburg.

The Fife & Drum is a gem nestled in the heart of Colonial Williamsburg just steps away from local shops and restaurants. My daughter and I stayed there while visiting William & Mary. The minute you enter this charming inn you feel transported and at ease. The room was spotless, nicely decorated, and quiet. After a long journey from New York we enjoyed a comfortable night’s sleep. Thoughtful touches are everywhere. There was makeup remover, high end toiletries, and plenty of soft towels elegantly presented. The extra toilet paper was wrapped up like a present in a hanging tin pail. Necessities like a hair dryer and iron with ironing board were included as well. The dining area is bright and sunny with a wonderful selection of tasty breakfast options. They even offer gluten free granola presented in mason jars. Billy is as charming as his inn, accommodating, friendly and helpful. After checkout we were able to return to the inn for snacks and refreshments and to use the privy. He allowed us to park after checkout as well. If you are visiting Colonial Williamsburg, I highly recommend staying at the Fife and Drum.

We had the place to ourselves. Amazing! Colonial, quaint, clean and wonderful innkeepers. Our room had two bedrooms with a small bathroom. Also, we had a lovely porch facing the rear of the building. Parking is avail across the street and easily accessed anytime You can’t find a better location. Breakfast was delicious. Coffee, water and snacks always available. Our room was not on the street side, so I can’t give a fair assessment of noise. On the backside of the building...it’s quiet
Thanks for a lovely stay F&D!

My husband and I spent two days exploring Williamsburg, and were happy that our home away from home was Fife and Drum Inn. Its central location is unbeatable, and the Inn is well-designed and maintained. The building is very obviously old and yet it had the conveniences and amenities one would expect of a modern hotel. We stayed in The Conservatory room, which looked out at the street, had a lovely clawfoot tub (which was appreciated after hiking 9 miles of Old Rag the day before), and was impeccably clean and comfortable. The common area was comfortable and well-stocked with coffee, tea, beverages, cereals, yogurt, and other consumables accessible 24/7. Fife and Drum Inn is very highly-recommended...we will return!

After reading a few too many reviews of other area hotels that were not doing a good job with their Covid cleaning, I read some highly favorable reviews of the Fife and Drum Inn and decided to book with them. The location is perfect and within walking distance of everything. The "loading area" out front does not seem to be available now because of expanded outdoor seating (in the street) for all the nearby restaurants (and there are many great ones), but the parking lot is just a few more steps away, so not a hassle at all. Be advised that the inn is actually on the second floor of the building where it's located, so you have to ascend a flight of stairs to reach the space. I don't know if there is an elevator for anyone who is mobility challenged, but I didn't notice this detail in reviews or on the website (though I'm sure it's there somewhere).

We stayed in the Webster-Hitchens Room (I think I'm remembering the name correctly). It was utterly charming and ingeniously compact, especially the bathroom. The bed was very comfortable and we never heard any street noise, even for being there on a weekend. This was amazing because there are tons of restaurants, shops and the entrance to the William & Mary campus within sight out the windows!

Definitely a gem for the location and the unique character of the building!

My wife and I stayed at the Fife and Drum for four nights in February. The proprietors are excellent hosts, our room and bath were comfortable, the bed made for sleeping, and the breakfasts adequate for the time of covid. The location of the F&D could not be better, easy walking distance from Colonial Williamsburg and from William and Mary, with several restaurants within a block. Parking is in a nearby public garage which is a two minute walk from the front door. Coffee, tea and snacks are always available. And in months not February there are outdoor seating areas which appear inviting if it hadn't been winter.

Because the entire B&B is on the second floor, patrons should be aware that from the front door to the second floor you will need to climb 17 steps. Our only complaint was that the chairs in our room we used in the evening for reading were not comfortable for long periods.

We don't think you would be disappointed with a stay at the Fife and Drum.

We are glad you enjoyed your stay. Thanks for sharing about the stairs. We work to make sure guests are informed before making their reservation, but it always helps when guests are looking out for each other! There is one flight of sixteen steps. The stairwell is wide with rails on both sides, which is helpful. If you let us know in advance, we can usually be available to help with luggage. We hope to see you again soon!

Thank you for your interest in the Fife & Drum Inn. As you may be aware we have the only lodging in downtown Williamsburg yet we are only steps away from the colonial historic area and the College of William & Mary. Most of our rooms have queen beds. It is extraordinarily safe in downtown Williamsburg. You may check rates and availability by visiting our web site directly or feel free to call me toll free at 888-838-1783. Billy
