Absolutely sets a new standard for my wife and I, who have been traveling and utilizing B&Bs for years. Our room (Rhododendron Room) was spacious, beautiful, comfortable, and spotlessly clean. Location was fine, just a few short minutes from colonial Williamsburg. But the real jewel was our hostess, Angela, whose friendliness and terrific breakfasts make a great place a fantastic place. And for the dog people among you, be sure to ask for an audience with Hank, the very friendly and very vocal basset hound. For those of you who are not dog people, don't worry – you likely won't even know there's a dog around. Angela, thank you again so much for making the last weekend of our vacation the most memorable part of it.

PLEASE BE WARE!!! Please be careful about booking at this place. My husband and I booked a trip through another vendor that paid this owner 7 months in advance of our trip (scheduled for May 2022). Unfortunately we had to cancel our trip. Of course we could not get a refund from the vendor as they paid the owner at booking. We have made multiple attempts to obtain a refund from this owner over the last few months. She keeps saying she will send the refund but never does.

Stayed at Colonial Gardens Williamsburg for our 30th anniversary in 2017. Stayed at a different B&B in Williamsburg in 2018, and it was a disappointment (see review for Cedars of Williamsburg.). So, we decided to revisit Colonial Gardens this year. This is a lovely home, with lovely grounds, even in the winter. The public areas are warm and inviting, and the four guest rooms are elegant without being pretentious. When we arrived, however, it was somewhat strange to find a note on the front door with my name. The note included instructions and a welcome message. Apparently, we were the only guests for that evening, and the hostess was going to be a tad late. The note said to make ourselves comfortable, so we did. I must mention that we were upgraded to the Primrose suite, even though we specifically booked the Library on the first floor, because stairs are a challenge. We managed to climb the stairs without incident, and were very pleased with the Primrose. Found out later that contractors were behind on work on the Library, which is why we were moved. My only complaint, but more just a concern, is that I thought we shyhave been notified of the change, since I was very special to why we wanted to be on the main level. Within a short time, Salem, our hostess, knocked on our door and welcomed us. Salem is a lovely and charming young woman, and made us my favorite breakfast . . . eggs Benedict. Breakfast was perfect, and I pride myself on knowing perfect Eggs Benedict. Although part of the charm if a B&B is meeting other guests, it was a bit of a guilty pleasure to have the house all to ourselves. Wanted to book two nights next December, but the can only book nine months out. I will be calling Colonial Gardens next April for sure. Sorry for being so wordy, but know that this is a beautiful property and we strongly recommend you try it if you are in the Williamsburg area.

Thank you so much for your kind review. I'm so glad you had a lovely time. I am sorry about having to switch your room we did not find out until early that day that the room was not going to be ready and I did try to call you but no one answered. Anytime we have to run out to the store we leave a self check-in package in case a guest shows up early which was the case when you arrive before the 4 oclock check in, we always try to anticipate what a guest may need and thankfully it worked out this time with your early arrival. Salem is a great gal and she is a great cook I'm so glad she was able to nail your eggs Benedict. I hope we can earn a 5-star on your next visit. We look forward to it.

Incredibly clean and neat rooms, delicious breakfast, and friendly staff! The inn is only a few minutes from the downtown area, which was perfect for us. My husband and I spent most of our stay touring the colonial area. Tons of great restaurants and shops nearby too, the innkeeper had quite a few recommendations. We would definitely stay again

My fiancé and I had never been to a B&B, and we are so glad that this was our first! The staff was so kind, very helpful, the breakfast was beyond delicious, and made you feel like royalty!! We loved the sunroom and the checker board that stays out for guests to play. We stayed in the Rhododendron Suite and it was so comfortable with plenty of space to just relax, and enjoy each other’s company. We will most definitely be staying here when we come back to Williamsburg! Thank you for providing such a wonderful place for people to come and visit!

This place looks very different from pictures presented on the web. It is a small house 5 minutes driving from center of Williamsburg. You definitely need a car! We stayed in a suite, king size bed was pretty comfortable, a cot provided for a third person not so. Bathroom was kind of outdated, as the whole furniture in the room. Shampoo and soap was not provided when needed if used (nit during our 7 day stay). Eventhough we were supposed to have a breakfast, we did not have one in 7 days, as we wanted to have it on our first day, but was refused to us with reasoning that it is served at 9.00. We came for breakfast at 9.25 though. Just strange... Our overall impression was that we would not stay there again if not forced...

It is regrettable that you chose to vent your anger at your situation in this way. We understand you did not want to stay with a bed and breakfast from the minute you walked in and said you had meant to book a hotel thru booking.com. you said you wanted your money back. We explained you could leave but since you booked through booking.com we had no control over your booking and could not give you your money back so you stayed. We went out of our way the entire time you were there to make sure you had everything you needed and then some. Your breakfast was prepared every day! Everyday and you know full well it was as each evening we said will we see you at breakfast tomorrow and each day you said yes and each day we though it in the trash 1 hour after you left just in case you came back for it. The first day when you showed up an hour late we offer to make you a whole new breakfast and you were disgusted that it was not ready and waiting for you but it was! It was in the oven but we thought you would appropriate a fresh made breakfast. It was apparent that you were looking for every opportunity to find fault and when you could not you made it up. I understand that i am supposed to be professional in my responses here but you have gone to far. Our rooms are exactly what are on our web site with the same french furniture so if you thought it outdated why did you book it? Also the bathroom just went thru a complete remodel a year ago with marble and frame-less glass. Your housekeeper replaced your items everyday when she completely cleaned your rooms. As to being a small house it is 4300 square feet with 4 guest rooms living dining and sun-room. It is a bed and breakfast. I believe our guests would be better served to read some of our other reviews.

From the moment we booked this room until we checked out it was a wonderful experience! We went for a mother/daughter getaway. The owner takes pride in the house and it’s history. The room was perfect. We stayed in the Azalea Suite which was perfect as there is a king bed and daybed in a separate room. So many comforts of home are provided. The location of the home is convenient to everything we wanted to do. Breakfast was delicious and served with our choice of coffee or tea. We would definitely recommend!

Short: -Get the wine and cheese platter -Never skip breakfast, even if you don't typically like breakfast -Incredibly friendly -Quality wine -Amazing hostess -Beautiful decor Long: About a year ago my best friend got engaged and I immediately began trying to plan our “bachelorcation.” We’re nearly thirty, incredibly nerdy and socially awkward; in other words, I knew that neither of us wanted to have a party and go barhopping. She’s an art conservation major who’s into organic foods and baked goods, and I couldn’t be more pleased with having chosen this B&B. Every time I decided on another B&B I would call and realize something wasn't going to work, whether it was the attitude of the person on the phone or that they couldn't accommodate things I was set on having. I wasn’t specifically looking for something in Williamsburg so it took a lot of searching to come across this; I looked at pretty much every B&B in NC and VA. I wanted something that had an archaic, artistic feel, but I was quite concerned that a fancier B&B would have a stuffy, uncomfortable atmosphere that we’d have to deal with. Alicia made sure that was absolutely not an issue. The second we walked in the door she was all smiles and authentic friendliness and she seemed genuinely excited for us to be there. We were immediately put at ease by her positivity and it was the perfect start to our stay to make us feel welcome. I hadn’t told my friend where we were staying so that first impression and the tour we got straight away really alleviated all my worries about the trip. I’ve been to other B&Bs, hotels and inns, even a couple others in Williamsburg for weddings, and Alicia is by far the best hostess or staff member I’ve had. Either she has the best customer service face in existence, or she actually loves her job. Also, she’s an amazing cook. Hands down she made the best two breakfasts I’ve had in my life. I can’t eat eggs or potatoes- so breakfast is usually a pretty lackluster meal for me. I wanted my friend to have an amazing breakfast and I had zero expectation of getting anything for me other than a fruit bowl and some toast. Even the breakfast foods I can eat like pancakes and sausage I don’t actually like, nor did I bother to mention my breakfast preferences, only my allergies, for fear that my friend’s breakfast wouldn’t be as awesome. My fruit bowl was fresh cantaloupe and blackberries, my toast was the best strawberry pound cake I’ve ever had, plus chicken sausage, baked tomato and spinach in a delicious white sauce, a chocolate covered mint leaf, and a glass of orange juice and a cup of coffee. The second morning it was blueberry bread pudding, perfectly cooked bacon, chocolate covered mint leaf, and strawberry slices in yogurt with the same drinks. The bread pudding was so good I forgot to take a photo of my breakfast. My friend still got eggs both mornings that were cooked in unique and from her account delicious ways. I don’t particularly care about colonial Williamsburg and all the tourist attractions there, I was just looking for a place that we could de-stress, get some massages, and then stay inside the whole time playing board games. However, having been to Williamsburg a lot throughout my life I can say that it’s a great location if you’re looking to tour the historic parts of the city. There’s a massage place just down the road that’s included in the spa package, or you can just call them and make your own appointments. The whole stay was incredibly relaxing, and much more like a fancy hotel than other B&Bs I’ve been to. Our robes were hung with the sleeves tucked into each other, chocolates on a silver tray on the bed, quality guest soap and shampoo, even little silver stickers on the tp. We came back from our massages and unexpectedly found our room spotless, our animal pajamas folded, our sleep masks on our pillows, and the robes, towels, and toiletries all done to be exactly how they were when we first arrived. I decided early on that I was going to get pretty much every add on. This friend isn’t just my best friend, she’s also just an all round amazing person, and I wanted to treat her to a really special weekend. The snack basket was better than I expected and had things for both of us in it. The cheese and fruit platter was delicious and both bottles of wine we got were perfect. If nothing else, get the cheese and fruit platter, you will have no regrets. We actually only ordered food from outside once because we had so many snacks (we also had the chocolate covered strawberries). There is a Keurig downstairs in the sunroom (along with board games, movies and snacks), which was perfect because I work night shift and I needed an extra boost of caffeine at various points of my stay to be awake at the same time as my friend. For the same reason it was also cool that the azalea suite had a day bed with a closeable door to separate it from the main bedroom so I could nap. Side notes: The grounds were beautiful and well kept (if it had been warmer I would have loved to spend more time outside there), the décor and the paintings had a regal feel, the pillows were incredibly fluffy, there are heaters in the rooms if you get chilly (though it was kept a comfortable temp), and Garfield the cat lives here along with another cat who is more shy and we only saw once. Garfield is adorable and sweet but is not allowed in the rooms to his dismay, and they will keep him in the staff part of the house if they think he’s bothering you or your allergies. They are both shorthaired, well-groomed, low dander and well-behaved cats.

My girlfriend and I were looking for a nice B&B to celebrate our 2-year anniversary and came across this gem. The property was beautiful and well-maintained (even in February) and the interior of the house was elegant and inviting. We stayed in the Azalea Room and were surprised at how spacious it was. There was plenty of media around the house suggesting local activities in the area that kept us busy for our entire stay. We purchased one of the package deals that included tickets to Colonial Williamsburg, a gourmet breakfast every morning, as well as some spa options which were all well worth the price. The gourmet breakfast served to us was the first "gourmet" breakfast I have purchased that actually looked, felt and tasted gourmet! Checking in and out was a breeze and upon returning to the house on our first evening after getting dinner we were greeted by our hosts, Alicia and Jesse. They were both gracious hosts and made us feel at home during our stay. Both of us agree that we will be back and will definitely recommend it to family and friends!
