The Griffin Hotel garners mixed reviews, with guests often lauding the professional and friendly staff, though some point out lapses in responsiveness. Its prime location near Colonial Williamsburg is a highlight, nestled in a serene setting that many find appealing, especially the spacious rooms with inviting patios.
While the hotel's cleanliness generally receives praise, concerns over room maintenance and outdated decor dampen the experience for some. Opinions on value vary, with the natural ambiance and affordable rates weighed against comfort and room condition issues.

The Griffin provides the ideal location within the colonial area. It is just across the street from the King's Arms Tavern and the rest of the colonial area. The rooms are large and overall the setting is very serene. Close to the tennis courts and the Williamsburg Inn.

My friends and I booked a girl trip here one year ago for the 2019 Grand Illumination weekend. Book early, especially for this weekend!!!!! This was my first time in Williamsburg, so we were there for the activities vs. the hotel/rooms. However, since I did stay there I'll do a room/hotel review. The location is very good in terms of being near the historic Inn (which is stunning at Christmas and a GREAT place for a slow and lovely meal) and close to other activities. It is also "relatively" close to a trolley stop if you have no mobility issues. My guess is l/8 to l/4 mile from the stop to the building. One of our group has mobility issues, so the walk from the trolley to the hotel would have been an issue since the hotel sets pretty far off of the main road. This made it very quiet and it is located in a pretty, wooded area). However, it is also very dark in the area at night, in terms of driving and walking. Since it was dark when we checked in, we had trouble finding the correct building we were in, so unloaded everything before discovering we were in the building next door. Oops. Once we checked in we did find flashlights in the room's closet, and we also used our iPhone flashlights to help navigate in the dark. In terms of the room itself, it is a bit dated in terms of furnishings. However, that didn't really both me since the bedding and towels were very comfortable and sleep quality/quiet was excellent. I loved how spacious the room was. Having two sinks (one in the bathroom/shower area and another in a dressing area) was extra nice and convenient, especially since steam from showers can affect blow drying hair and applying makeup. The storage (closet and chest of drawers) was plentiful as well. There was also a private patio overlooking a wooded area; however, due to our busy activities and the cooler December temps, I didn't use the patio. I was on the second floor, which was very quiet. If the hotel had an elevator, I didn't see it, so if walking two flights of stairs with a heavy suitcase is an issue, you might double check the availability of an elevator or request the first floor. I will add that check in for this and the other buildings that make up the 'hotel" is in a tiny little house close to the historic Williamsburg Inn. So, once you get to the building (which is tough to find in the dark but not an issue during the day), you won't encounter any staff to answer questions or to assist with bags. I'm glad we stayed here vs. the lovely but busier historic Inn. But, seeing and experiencing the Inn is a must do in my opinion.

A lot to digest? Read an AI-generated summary of recent traveler reviews.
As others on Trip Advisor have stated, the rooms are a bit dated and could use a refresh. I would especially recommend replacing the lumpy sofa beds. That said, the location and accommodations were perfect for our party. We wanted relative seclusion and to be able to walk out a patio to the grass.
I do have two relatively minor “beefs” that I did not think to question while we were in Williamsburg.
First, the lack of clarity surrounding the ability to make advance reservations for carriage rides if one stayed at the Griffin, the cost of the rides, and the number of people who could fit in one carriage. (a) We were told by one reservation agent that those staying at the Griffin could not make advance reservations for carriage rides and then told by another telephone reservation agent that we could but would have to reserve two carriages for a party of 3 adults and 3 kids at a cost of $65 per carriage. When I finally was able to convince a third telephone reservation agent that I could make advance reservations if I was staying at the Griffin, she insisted that I pay the $130 up front which I did. (The concierge at the Lodge was off and no one suggested that I could use the concierge at the Inn to book. The tan info sheet provided to guests at the Griffin just gives a phone #, so I used that.) (b) When I subsequently went to pick up the actual tickets from the Inn’s concierge, the receipt indicated a price of $50 per carriage. So, now I am thinking that I was overcharged by a total of $30. If this is correct, please send me a refund. (c). When we arrived on Tuesday for our carriage rides, both the agent at the window and the driver said that all of us could ride together. He extended the time of the ride to account for the two bookings, which was fine for us. But, we would have preferred up front to have had the option of having to only pay for one booking.
Second, the literature, which I only looked at once I arrived home, says that the rate includes a resort outlets saving booklet. We never received one. While we may never have used the booklet, it would again have been nice to have the option.

Griffin Hotel is located closely to the Williamsburg Inn (where check-in takes place), but it looks very simple, modern outside, with plenty of parking space and good nature around. The hotel offers no secure WiFi connection (instead, guests can use some alternative local WiFi), breakfast is very basic if not miserable as compared to the hotel cost; moreover, a pet fee (both daily charge and the cleaning fee) are not fully indicated at the time of the booking and are very high, making the hotel bill outrageously high as compared to the price of other hotels. One big satisfaction comes from the wonderful spa/swimming pool, although the dressing rooms didn't have a separate shower as is common in other spas/fitness centers. We will not stay in this hotel in the future as it is too pricey for the quality you get. Also, it is challenging to come there for Christmas, as all the shops and restaurants are closed on December 25 (with exception of 1-2 old-town restaurants which were fully booked and expensive).

The location of the Griffin is great and we especially enjoyed the nature trail on site. We had a first floor room and it was nice for the kids to be able to play outside. However, the beds were very uncomfortable and most disappointing were the extremely limited dining options. It was almost impossible to get reservations at any of the Colonial Williamsburg restaurants and very long waits for places that accepted walk-ins. This was especially tough to manage with young children and we ended up eating outside of town during most of our stay. We also couldn't get pool reservations despite calling days in advance. We expected better for the price and resort fees paid.

My husband and I traveled to colonial Williamsburg Virginia to celebrate our honeymoon from December 26, 2019 to December 29, 2019
We had an amazing time. We stayed at the Griffin hotel right in colonial Williamsburg I highly recommend staying in one of the hotels in colonial Williamsburg for many reasons one for the convenience factor. There is so much to see and staying in the heart of things makes it easier to maximize time and see as much things as possible. Another advantage of staying in one of the hotels in colonial Williamsburg is that you receive discounts on admission prices to various events especially the park passes
All of the staff my husband and I have encountered have been extremely courteous and helpful. I would especially like to mention Linda and the rest of the team from the concierge’s desk at the Williamsburg Inn . Linda was amazingly helpful and courteous to my husband and I I feel that she went above and beyond in order to accommodate us. Linda handled our requests with meticulous proficiency and if you happen to stay at the Griffin Hotel or the Williamsburg Inn, just know that you will be in good hands with the concierge’s team
The Williamsburg Lodge has an amazing breakfast buffet which is an additional fee but definitely worth it. If you have breakfast at the breakfast buffet at the Williamsburg lodge you’ll probably want to skip lunch being that there’s so much delicious food to choose from . We had breakfast at the Williamsburg inn one of the mornings and it was delicious but a little pricey.
On one evening we participated in the escape room and even though we lost we had a wonderful time. Another evening event we attended was the Williamstown ghost tour which was also a lot of fun.
I would highly recommend coming to colonial Williamsburg for all types of people from honeymooners to families to younger people to older people. Do you have an appreciation for history you’ll find something here for you.

From check in with Jan, to housekeeping and accommodations, we love this hotel! The rooms are very spacious and with two separate sink areas, it’s easy for both of us to get ready at the same time. The hotel is tucked away, giving a feeling of seclusion. It is only a short walk to Colonial Williamsburg and a beautiful stroll day or nighttime to the Williamsburg Inn for dining and cocktails. The staff couldn’t be more accommodating. If you ask for something, they are there in a matter of minutes. And the room rates are very reasonable. We have stayed in other CW hotels, but always come back to the Griffin!

The view was stunning, employees were nice and helpful, parking was free, breakfast was included (although not hot; just cereal, trail mix; fruit cups, instant oatmeal, coffe cake), and the rooms were huge, as was the pool. Why won't I be back? Because cleanliness and knowing that I won't be taking something disgusting home with me is my #1 priority when travelling. I brought my kid to the area to learn about the 1700s, and based on what I found, that was probably the last time this place got a decent cleaning. As soon as we got to our room, I found a waxy, used earplug on the floor by the bed. Inspecting the drawers in the bedside table, I found a contact lens. The shower had gross hair in it. The carpets were filthy and the coffee table was COVERED in crumbs. My child went out on the balcony and picked up a half-smoked cigar. In the middle of the night, he woke up screaming, saying he couldn't breathe. Laying a fresh (I hope) towel over the pillow seemed to help, so I'm guessing the dust mites were astounding and the pillows must be years old. The bed looked clean, but was not comfortable. Oh, and if you have mobility issues, you'll want to avoid this place. There is no elevator and you have to drive to the pool.

Williamsburg is a wonderful place to visit for a relaxing vacation. We did not get the room we requested when making reservations, even though we made the reservations months in advance. I also checked on the reservations the week before our visit. This was very disappointing.

Although dated(1960s-1970s era), the Griffin Hotel offers extremely spacious rooms in a very quiet setting, but yet only moments from the Colonial City and at a reasonable price. Definitely will stay here again. It is important to know however, that this 2-story facility has no elevator, no front desk and no on-premises dining. Those services are available at the nearby Williamsburg Inn or Lodge.

Special needs rooms on the main level do.
It is a lovely walk to one of the bus stops in Williamsburg. From there you can start to enjoy the sites, or take one of the shuttles to one of the buildings farther away.
Unfortunately, it does not. Only two stories, but an elevator would be helpful. Request the first floor with a pond view. You will not. be disappointed!
I do not know. I would call Colonial Williamsburg directly.
