Hotel's Favorite
My wife and I celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary recently by staying two nights at one of the Colonial Houses in Williamsburg. We were at the Orrell Kitchen, which was built about 1750 and once served as the actual kitchen separate from the main Orrell House. It really was a special and unique experience to be here. We didn't know what to expect in such an old building, but it had all the comforts of a modern luxury hotel plus centuries of atmosphere. The lower level had a fireplace, desk, two leather wing chairs, HD TV, refrigerator, coffee-tea maker, sleep sofa, closet, and a large half-bathroom. Upstairs was a full bathroom and queen-size bed with a bureau, HD TV, and closet. Air-conditioning controls on both levels. It was charming and only a few minutes walk to the Williamsburg Inn. Your parking spot is located right there. We'd like to thank Abby for providing a warm welcome at the Inn and giving us some welcome advice on the famous hot springs in Arkansas. Karen served us a delicious breakfast in the Terrace Room at the Inn, with her wonderful no-nonsense personality and great professionalism. We also fondly remember Linda from previous visits when she kindly served us both afternoon tea in the Rockefeller Room and lunch in the Terrace Room. Years ago we danced to the orchestra in the elegant Regency Room, too, a truly special place. John in the Spa was very helpful in showing me around the athletic club, indoor and outdoor heated pools, locker room with private shower, and the nice hot tub that lets you slowly descend into it. So, thank you all again for such a pleasant experience to mark our big day. We hope to return for our 20th anniversary, God willing.

The location could not be better as it is located at midpoint on Duke of Gloucester street, the main street in historical Williamsburg, hence, closed to all important attractions on foot. As our room was on the second floor, we do not recommend it for people with walking difficulties. The accommodations were excellent with period furniture but all the modern facilities. The shower head was on a slanted ceiling and a bit difficult to use for people 5'10" or taller. Also, please coordinate street cleaning and gardening to not start at 6:00 am as it makes it difficult to sleep when those activities take place. A private, secure area for parking is provided as well as good wifi connection, concierge, access to the Inn facilities, etc. Highly recommended activities, as all the re-enactors, in their period costumes are amazingly good and very knowledgeable making history alive. Highly recommend dinner at the Kings Arms Tavern. Great food, authentic locale and waiters in period costumes bring history alive.

We returned to Williamsburg in winter to stay in a colonial house and enjoyed it even more than the first time. We love how cozy these houses feel with a fire when it's a cold winter night. Our family is two adults and two kids, age 6 and 8, and we booked the Kitchen Forge house, which must be a newer house because it was not on the map they give you at check-in. Two beautiful bedrooms, two sitting rooms, and two bathrooms and a tiny kitchenette. Our kids took the upstairs room with the twins and we took the downstairs queen. We're always amazed at the great value of the houses. This huge place with hotel services was just $450 per night with a AAA discount. We could never get a suite this huge at the same price at another luxury hotel. The kids could even play a good game of hide and seek inside. We enjoyed our chilly walk down Duke of Gloucester St. to the only tavern open in the winter season, Chowning's Tavern for a very reasonably priced dinner with a nice man in colonial garb playing the fiddle, very pleasant. Afterward, we walked down to the ice skating rink where they had several fires going to stand by and warm up. We got the kids' some dessert at the candy store which stayed open till 7 pm. We only stayed one night as we were on our way to the eastern shore, but we wished we were staying two.

The basic feeling of this colonial house is enjoyed mostly on the exterior as you approach the building and get to go behind white picket fence saying private residence. This exclusive feeling as you walk under old trees weeping down against cedar shingles with moss along old brick walkways. We stayed in the Ewing shop which is a one room house with appropriate modern bathroom amenities and a proper bedroom with good windows and airflow. I was not a fan of the flat screen TV because it was not hidden from view and I didn’t come to colonial Williamsburg to stay in a 200-year-old house with high definition CNN. Also while there was a fireplace we were unable to light the fireplace or enjoy the ambience because I’ve been obscure rule about only lighting fires when the temperature is under 50°. So although it was a rainy cool night we could not enjoy a crackling fire. Moreover there was no soft period lighting such as LED candles to enjoy an authentic experience while in the space. The staff was prompt and pleasant my only complaint is that the building was difficult to find so some improvement should be made regarding specific direction to get to your selected house from the check-in location. I restore old historic houses for a living so I was impressed with the concept and we will definitely come again to enjoy this gem of American architecture which is Williamsburg.

We stayed during early March 2021 and felt that everything was appropriate in terms of distancing and sanitation. The Peter Hay Kitchen provided the low-contact stay we were looking for. The colonial houses are in the top tier so many of all the amenities you get with the full-service accommodations, you also get with the colonial houses; really lovely. The P.H. Kitchen comes with its own parking spot near the entrance of the house so you don't have to carry your luggage far. There is a living room; a kitchenette with seating for two, two electric burners and mini-fridge; a bedroom with queen canopy bed; and ensuite bathroom with tub. There are ample markets nearby and if you want to prepare simple meals, it's entirely doable. You do need to bring your own plates, flatware, pots, etc., but with parking so close, it's not a problem. We could have lived there comfortably for quite some time. It was cold enough to have a fire every night which made our stay perfect. That said, if you're expecting modern, stay in one of the other locations. The furniture is antique. The stairs are creaky, The bathroom has a pitched ceiling line. You'll probably hit your head if you're tall. There is only one small tv and it's shoved into a cabinet which you can thankfully close up and ignore for the entire stay. You are staying in the equivalent of an 18th Century house. Seriously. They're not joking. Embrace it! The only thing we would have changed is to replace the console table by the door with a drop side table that opens large enough to play games on. Oh, and an ottoman so you have something to put your feet on while enjoying the fire. And, the bed was very soft and bouncy, which is not our personal preference.

My daughter and I stayed in a colonial house during a weekend visit to Williamsburg. The "house" (really just a large room with a bath) was in a fantastic location for walking to the Williamsburg Inn and the sights of Colonial Williamsburg. It had charm and was spotlessly clean, and the refrigerator was a bonus. The bed was very comfortable. I would love to give a five star review, but there were too many little things that were problematic. Although we had the heat set to around 70 degrees, it felt like the air conditioning was on; the room was cold. The toilet ran and ran, and maintenance had to come late at night to replace a part. It's nice to have a coffee maker, but they are stingy on coffee--only one cup a day per person. Luckily we ran into someone from housekeeping who gave us a few extra cups. On the whole, though, I would recommend staying in a colonial house for the experience.

We loved staying in the heart of Colonial Williamsburg. Peter Hays Kitchen was his off of Duke of Gloucester Street. Upstairs is a full bath and beautiful canopy bed. Downstairs is a working fireplace, a quaint mini kitchen, and a small seating area.
We enjoyed an early morning stroll with coffee from our coffee maker. We knew there would be a mini fridge so had our milk for coffee ready.
We felt completely safe during Covid times. Guests and staff were all following the protocols and we found
Staying in the heart of Colonial Williamsburg is well worth the extra cost. We were in the 18th century for a few days and loved it.

Although we've visited Colonial Williamsburg a dozen times in the last few years, this was our first time staying on property, in a Colonial House. It was the Fourth of July, we know from past visits how hot and crowded it is. We were also sure that air conditioned mid-day breaks would be limited, due to COVID restrictions. A Colonial House seemed the perfect solution. And it was! The Ewing Storehouse was clean, comfortable, furnished beautifully. Parking was easy, there were no unauthorized vehicles taking up spaces meant for guests (that had been a concern of mine.) the room was quiet! - as a stand-alone unit, there are no neighbors on the other side of the wall. I downloaded a 'white noise' app, since the quiet was keeping me awake! Each lamp had USB ports, and wifi was excellent, so we had no trouble keeping devices charged. It was wonderful to be such a short walk from Duke of Gloucester, and the heart of Colonial Williamsburg. We'll most definitely be staying in Colonial Houses again!

Renting a house in Colonial Williamsburg can be a little confusing. Everything is accessed from the Colonial Williamsburg website. But finding the location of a specific house and subsequent reviews on a specific house can be tricky. I offer no solutions... We stayed at the “Brick House Shop.” It is a quaint, two story white house on the corner of Duke of Gloucester and Botetourt. Just behind the “Brick House Tavern.” It is right in the middle of Colonial Williamsburg. It is small and only three rooms; a common room with large convertible couch, two bedrooms (2 double beds and one four poster queen) plus an upstairs and downstairs bathroom. We had a wonderful night. The entire house was very clean and comfortable. Yes, it’s an old house, so there are little quirks, but we weren’t expecting perfection. It is expensive - again, worth the price for the experience. We would do it again in a heartbeat. Our two grandchildren and their parents had the opportunity for a great immersive experience.

The location of the Masonic Kitchen is perfect -- we parked our car out back and walked everywhere. The accommodations inside are really nice. We were in Williamsburg for our daughter's college graduation, and made our reservations during COVID. Because of the pandemic, it was important to us to have large outdoor space to visit with our daughter, her friends and their families. The yard of the Masonic Kitchen is perfect for entertaining. We hosted 2 small outdoor gatherings and they were unforgettable.
(BTW, Masonic Kitchen has strong water pressure, robust air conditioning and good WiFi.)

The Internet/WIFI situation has greatly improved over the last couple of years. We've be visiting regularly for over 30 years and have experienced the WIFI evolve. We've stayed in different Colonial Houses recently and the WIFI has been rock solid. We had no problems at all with video conferencing.
Each Colonial house has its own parking area very near by. We do offer bellmen services upon request to help with Luggage. The walk from parking lot is not far at all.
Sorry to be so late writing back. I always call the Colonial Williamsburg direct. The Griffin House is also an on-property hotel, but you are looking for the 'Colonial Houses" or "Tavern Rooms" were are on property and not in a big hotel. I hope this helps
