Cross this threshold and have a uniquely romantic, private, and memory making experience at Governor's Trace bed and breakfast. Located just a minute walk from George Washington's favorite tavern in Colonial Williamsburg, Governor's Trace B&B is the closest Williamsburg bed and breakfast to the Historic Area...just a 30 second walk and "you have arrived." Governor's Trace is also the oldest continuously operating bed and breakfast in Williamsburg, VA. Sue & Dick Lake, innkeepers with more than 30 years experience in operating this bed and breakfast in Williamsburg, have created an environment that allows you to make the most of being alone---together. Governor's Trace "...vies for the most romantic (bed and breakfast in Williamsburg)"...WASHINGTON POST

If you want an authentic colonial Williamsburg experience stay here. The house is beautifully decorated in period colonial. Breakfast served in our room each morning was a very special touch. We were there five nights and breakfast each morning was uniquely different and delicious. The inn was quiet and Dick was the perfect host. Within walking distance of colonial Williamsburg and very convenient to restaurants. Dick is great about recommendations. Will definitely return. Thank you Dick for a very special five days!

My wife and I stayed there for part of a Christmas/New Year's trip. The service was first-rate and the food was superb. The time we selected for our breakfast to be served was the time that it was served. Whenever we left to do our sight seeing or see our shows, when we returned, the room was done. The bed was very comfortable and we slept very well every night we were there. The B & B was centrally located to everything in Colonial Williamsburg and we were either a 10-minute walk or five minute drive to everything we wanted to do. We definitely enjoyed our stay there

This B&B is a five minute walk from one end of Duke of Gloucester Street (the other end from the commercial district). You can't get much closer to Colonial Williamsburg than this. There are three rooms for guests, so it was nice and quiet during our stay. There is a railroad track close by, but it's down in a culvert and it didn't disturb us during the night. The breakfasts are excellent and it's a treat to have them served in your room. Dick, the owner, was very helpful and suggested the Second Street Bistro for dinner one night, which turned out to be an excellent suggestion. He was also happy to answer questions about the house and the area. The bedroom and large bathroom were clean and interestingly furnished and the house and garden well kept. There is ample parking off street at the rear of the house. One thing I hope can be added in the future is either in-room coffee makers, or coffee in the sitting room. It's good to have some while relaxing and reading.

Left for Colonial Williamsburg today and there had been a room mix up with the dates so I needed a place to stay tonight. So I found a nice looking B&B with an available room and booked it. The Governor’s Trace B&B. Website took my credit card information and at no point said anything about any limitations. Upon arriving after a near 6 hour drive the owner did not know about our booking. Claimed he had not received one. When I showed him the email with the booking information he then contradicted his original story by saying that he sent me an email stating that one night bookings on the weekend were not acceptable. When I told him I had not received an email he became belligerent and said that on the booking rules on the website it states that one night stays on weekends are not accepted. AT NO POINT during the booking process does the website direct you to this page or provide you with that information. Looking at the website after the fact, the information about booking restrictions is on there but at no point during the booking process are you sent to that page or informed of any restrictions, you’d have to stumble upon it yourself. It also says that they don’t allow kids. If the restrictions had been mentioned at any point, I obviously would not have made the booking. When I proceeded to point out that he had my credit card information he responded that he had not charged the card (although there is nothing to stop him from now doing so, and given his lying and belligerence it's hard to trust that the information is secure). When I informed him that he needed to fix his website booking procedures because the website booking procedure are apparently broken (I believe I used the word awful) he became even more aggressive, proceeded to insult me in front of my 10 year old son, unnecessarily calling me an “awful person” (at least he didn’t cuss in front of the kid, I suppose) and made us leave. At no point up until then did I raise my voice. I simply wanted to work out what had gone wrong with the booking process, make sure I hadn’t been charged and see if there was a solution to the error. Not a way to run a business or to act as a reasonable human being and, shocked and bewildered at the unwarranted treatment, I did point out that he was behaving like a “horrible human being” (mindful of my kid, those were my exact words and I raised my voice only enough to be heard through the closing door). The behavior we were met with was unwarranted, unprovoked and absolutely shocking. There are plenty of great places to stay in Williamsburg. Avoid this one like the plague if you’re ever there unless you enjoy being insulted by a belligerent old man with a broken booking website who takes your credit card information without providing service.

My husband and I stayed in the Francis Nicholson room for 2 nights. We have stayed in many bed and breakfasts, and both agree this is one of our favorites! Dick was a lovely host. Breakfast was served out on our private screened in porch each morning and was delicious. The home is cozy, welcoming, and decorated with beautiful antiques. Everything had been thoughtfully put in place. You could really tell that he has done this for a while and does it very well....and most importantly, enjoys giving you a great experience! Wish we could have stayed longer, but we will return each year! As a side note, we rode our bikes everywhere during our stay. No need to drive and try to find parking. Biking took just minutes to get to all of the Williamsburg sites!

This was the best B&B experience we have had. With meticulous attention to detail, a beautifully maintained historic property devoted to three private suites, Dick Lake continues a 25+ year tradition of fine hospitality without intruding on the privacy of the guests. Our third, or maybe fourth, visit was as good as the first. We never saw the other guests, although the place was fully booked. Excellent candlelight breakfast served in the suite: arriving within about a minute of the scheduled time; a change in silverware, china, linens and towels each day. The grounds are like a park and located a two minute stroll from Christiana Campbell's Restaurant in Colonial Williamsburg. The host will provide insider info on your dinner choices and plans, but only if you ask, so as not to be intrusive. I whole heartedly recommend this place. Do stay there.

From the moment my husband and I stepped foot in the Governor's Trace B & B, it felt like home. It was so warm and comfortable. Dick, the host, was attentive and helpful. We loved the wonderful breakfasts each morning brought to our room. The added bonus was being able to walk to Historic Williamsburg from the B & B. I would definitely recommend staying here.

Dick, the owner and host, truly made us feel so at home. His breakfasts were excellent and delivered right to your room or patio (attached to our first floor bedroom). It was a very short walk (maybe 100 yards or so) to the grounds of Colonial Williamsburg and you quickly arrive at the Capital Building on Duke of Gloucester. Here you can grab the bus that tours the town stroll right up the entire historic area. Then at anytime you can walk back and avoid staying at the busy Inns that are really not any closer than Governor's Trace. So relaxing being at this place.

My wife and I returned to Williamsburg, VA this summer and once again stayed at the Governor's Trace Bed and Breakfast, on the ground floor. We had fond memories of this place back from our first visit in 2015 and we were not disappointed! Accommodations: Great, spacious room with ceiling fans (with a great Colonial Williamsburg theme). Everything was clean, neat, and organized. Breakfast: Delicious! We stayed 5 days and had 5 different homemade breakfasts, all of which were great! These breakfasts included (in no particular order): waffles, french toast, two different egg dishes and a breakfast casserole. Juice and hot tea was also served, along with fresh fruit almost every day! Location: You literally have to walk out of the driveway, walk maybe 40-50 feet over quaint a bridge, and then you are in Colonial Williamsburg. You get the best of both world's by staying here: a quiet residential neighborhood so going to sleep is easy and the convenience of being near all the action. If you want to get to the other side of town, there is a free shuttle bus (provided you bought the Williamsburg day passes) that will take you there (and the stop is probably 1/4 mile away from the house at most). The only thing to consider about the location is if you want to walk into town, you do have to cross a road without a crosswalk. The road isn't terribly busy and crossing is legal (cause there is a sidewalk on either side) but it's just something to keep in mind. Seems like an oversight by the city planner. Host: Dick is an incredible host. He made us feel welcome without being overbearing. He offered useful tips on places to go and things to see plus provided free daily guides for the duration of our stay, enabling us to plan the day's activities while eating breakfast. On our last day, when he saw we were ordering a Lyft/Uber to take us to the train station, he offered to drive us to the train station free of charge, which was incredibly generous. 10/10 would highly recommend!

My husband and I stayed at Governor’s Trace 3 nights over Christmas. We were greeted and made to immediately feel welcome. We loved the proximity to Colonial Williamsburg and were able to walk to Christiana Campbell’s Tavern for our Christmas dinner. The breakfasts we were served we amazing! I even asked the owner for two of his recipes and he kindly gave them to me (I have made both of them since we arrived home). We loved being served breakfast in our room every morning. We didn’t really use the common area as we were out most of the day and at night were tired. The bed was very comfortable and we loved the Colonial decor! We would definitely stay here again as we really want a chance to try out the porch which we read so much about!
