Of the twenty-four Williamsburg Bed & Breakfasts, Newport House is the only one with 18th Century History as it's central theme. Newport House Bed and Breakfast is where your real colonial adventure begins. Your hosts are not merely fine Innkeepers, but authors and historic sailing ship designers.
We enjoyed our four night stay at the Newport House B & B. April was a beautiful time of year to be in Williamsburg with balmy temperatures and lovely spring flowers in bloom. The Millars were very welcoming, the accommodations comfortable, and we appreciated the historical information and local knowledge from John, as well as learning more about honey bees and bunnies from Cathy. Breakfast was delicious served in an elegant setting. We would definitely recommend staying at the Newport House. Bud & Jane

Newport House Bed and Breakfast was the perfect way to end our east coast experience. Our hosts John and Cathy went out of their way to make us comfortable and get the most out of our 2 days in colonial Williamsburg. They are both very knowledgeable about the history of the area, and John shared with us many very interesting historical tales (those that are not found in your average history book) an added so much extra depth to our trip. Our breakfast was delicious and our room was so comfortable and decorated beautifully. We were able to easily walk to downtown colonial Williamsburg but we were especially grateful to have John offer to pick us up when it started to rain unexpectedly. And huge thank you to John for taking us to the airport at 5 AM when our airline departure was changed. This place is amazing and you won’t be disappointed!…

I'm torn about whether to share my opinion or not. It is one of those types of places that you'd rather keep a secret for yourself. Yet that would be a disservice to the wonderful hosts, John and Cathy, of this spectacular B&B. So schedule your stay and allow John to regale you with seafaring tales as you admire the colonial decor.

The home is a walk through history with so many special touches by your hosts John and Cathy. It is perfectly located and amazingly comfortable. John is a historian and shared his knowledge of Colonial times, as well as making the best blueberry pancakes!

We stayed at the lovely Newport House over Labor Day weekend and we felt that we stepped back to Colonial times. The hosts, John and Kathy are very welcoming, warm, and a very interesting couple. They love to share their extensive knowledge of beekeeping and John is extremely knowledgable of Williamsburg history. He has written several books. We were served a delicious breakfast at a beautifully set dining room table. The Newport House is within walking distance of Colonial Williamsburg and William and Mary College, and close proximity to all other local attractions. Bedrooms are beautifully decorated and very comfortable. We will stay again and highly recommend.

Every detail in Newport House Bed & Breakfast is an experience in 18th century Colonial life! Not only was the home masterfully, authentically built and decorated, but its a leisurely stroll to Colonial Williamsburg & Market Square. The ballroom upstairs hosts Colonial Country Dancing every Tuesday evening and all in attendance are delightful! We had so much fun! The mistress of the house, Kathy, effortlessly cooked up a bounty for us each morning including a beautiful bread from a *1610 recipe and the fruit she served each of the three mornings was some of the best we've ever tasted. Of note: Her homemade jam is divine, the honey on the table is from her backyard bees, and she took great pains to care for my dietary needs. The master of the house, John, is a history scholar like no other we've sat with. He made time to sit with us, helping us understand not only the history of what we were experiencing each day of our trip, but all the little details and back story of how we got to this point in history. You'll come away with such a deeper understanding of all the Colonial period players...and you'll count yourself blessed. Of note: The 1st two paragraphs above are well worth the cost of our stay, but John sharing his expert knowledge was priceless. We will definitely stay here again!…

We stayed at this lovely establishment in early October. The hosts, John & Kathy, were just remarkably welcoming and extremely interesting to be around to boot! The home is truly beautiful and full of historical detail. Our room was very comfortable with great sheets (a must for us!). Old Town Williamsburg is within walking distance which was another big plus. Breakfast was served in a beautiful dining room and was excellent each of the two mornings we were there. Highly recommend this place.

Staying at the Newport House was a wonderful experience. The hosts were gracious and shared nuanced knowledge of colonial America and Williamsburg in particular. John, the husband of the husband and wife team, is a scholar of early American history. We all learned a tremendous just talking with him about the house and his passions for the colonial era. The house itself was based on the plans of Peter Harrison, an acclaimed 18th century architect. Our host was kind enough to explain the fascinating details of Harrison’s life and how he (Harrison) fit into the vast scheme of the colonial America and the American Revolution. The room we stayed in was spacious (queen and double bed) with an ensuing bathroom and a TV. What is really interesting is that the B and B hosts traditional colonial dancing on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Unfortunately, we were not there to experience the dancing, but if you truly want to understand early American culture what better opportunity is there but to engage in the art/popular culture? Beyond the structure of the house, the food was delicious. Cathy, one of the hosts, found the most delicious honeydew melon I have ever eaten. Most of the foods the hosts provided were of local or interesting origin. At breakfast over banana pancakes, we had local maple syrup along with syrup from nutmeg fruit: delectable. The highlight for my six-year-old son were the wild box turtles living in the backyard that all had names. Feeding the turtles honeydew rinds was worth the 98 degree heat outside! We are so happy to have stayed at Newport House and would gladly stay there again on future trips to Williamsburg!…

We’re still on the high of this fabulous overnight experience! Although I know Williamsburg well and went to W&M decades ago, here I am in my 60s and never worn a colonial costume nor danced English country dancing, rarely regaled by fascinating true stories of history nor had the great pleasure of staying in John and Cathy Millar’s B&B. Until now. Wow. My husband and I plus another couple planned an overnight and did the works. Rented the costumes with Cathy as lady-in-waiting, finding just the right style for each of us. Going to dinner at Chowning’s Tavern. Arriving back to the B&B for weekly English Country Dancing in the beautiful ballroom upstairs. Dancing the night away! Sleeping in the beautiful 4 poster bed and waking to a delicious breakfast in a magnificent dining room, filled with treasures and stories and warm conversation. I can’t wait to go back and do it again! John and Cathy are wonderful innkeepers. The best I’ve ever known and I’ve known quite a few. Generous and intelligent and gracious and devoted. And fun! Until you’ve heard John’s true tales, you have not really heard history. He is fascinating, learned and such an interesting storyteller. I could listen to him for hours. Cathy is pure delight. Gardens, bunny, bees and beyond. This is a true treasure, rich experience and I highly recommend it! …
