Hotel's Favorite
We came to Williamsburg for a few days to see Colonial Williamsburg, Yorktown, Jamestown and the museums during the social distancing mandate which we found was followed with detailed care. We enjoyed our suite (405). It was comfortable and spacious. It did show wear, like the chest of drawers the TV was on in the living room area had a pull hanging by one screw. The tub spout(spigot) is extremely loose to the point of falling off with the faucet loose such if you put it on the warm-hot side the weight of the handle falls to hotter water. This can be problematic because the hot water is so very hot almost untouchable. Beds were a 6 out of 10 in comfort, pillows while abundant, were a bit uncomfy. I know this is a personal touch item but I had a hard time finding a pillow to my comfort. The great: is and remains to be the staff. Adrian, and Alex went above and beyond their calls of duty and take customer service seriously. The maintenance man (sorry I did not get his name) came up tour room to fix a TV issue. I asked him if there was a menu guide to tell me what was on the channels and when. He said not on this TV. I thanked him, he went on his way only to return with a paper copy from the front desk! This is going the extra mile. For this and this only, we would return to this property.

I stayed 2 nights recently, selected this property based on past reviews, location, and my best understanding of what is/isn't being offered at many hotels now due to our fantastic Governor Northam and rampant fear. The location was very convenient and the room - though not as spacious as it looks in photos - was fine for our needs. Feedback: The pool was stone cold freezing! I called many properties to find one that actually was open with a reasonable capacity so my kids could swim in the evenings. After 5 minutes or less they were so cold they had to get out. It was absurdly cold, so much so that I didn't even get in at all. I wish I'd had a thermometer because I would guess the water would register as dangerously cold. The room could have used a little sprucing up - dresser was a little worn, kitchen dishwasher was beat up and top rack was off it's track. Room was for 4-5 people, but there were only enough plates, glasses, utensils for 3. That made no sense. The hilton 'lysol' seal was sort of a joke as I have no idea if the dishes had been washed at all and housekeeping had provided a half-used mini bottle of dish soap. Luckily I brought my own and washed everything before using it. The bathroom was nice, and the shower head great, but there was no sufficient towel bar to hang a bath towel on. The only one was directly over the toilet and could have worked for a hand towel but a bath towel draped down onto the toilet tank is never a good thing. With 4 in the room we had few choices here. The standard Homewood amenities like the nice breakfast and evening reception are gone, yet Hilton's brand people keep touting them even after check in on the app. So every time I used my digital key I get reminded of what I'm NOT getting on my stay. The breakfast of high calorie, carb-filled muffin and carb filled granola bar wasn't great. It's also sad that there's no orange juice and all you get is a bottle of water. Coffee is available in the morning only downstairs, and frankly nobody seems too concerned about the sanitation of the pots. It was tidy, but everyone is touching the handles, so why can't they have an attendant? You definitely need this coffee in the AM because the awful 'cuisinart' pod-brewere monstrosity for the in room coffee was a joke. The decaf pods tasted alright, but weak. The regular coffee tasted like weak, dirty tea. It was nothing short of awful, if you could even get the packets open without tearing the whole filter pod open. The photos showed a small coffee pot and I'd brought my own filters and coffee, but sadly they'd done a switcheroo. Ditch these pod machines...they are absolutely terrible. The staff was thin, but every time I had a request they were responsive and courteous. No complaints about the people. I think the facility needs to do a better job of proactively setting expectations and the Hilton/Homewood brand folks need to stop lying to customers promoting benefits that I'm told have been eliminated nationally. No full breakfast? Allow us some choice of what to put in our brown lunch sack. No reception? Give everyone a bottle of beer or single-serve wine. Don't just cut this stuff - there's nothing to distinguish your brand anymore. Try a little harder and stop using COVID as an excuse to cheap out.

Response from kijana casserly, General Manager at Homewood Suites Williamsburg

G6690FVkathyh - Thank you for taking the opportunity to review your recent stay with us at Homewood Suites Williamsburg. I appreciate your comments on the location and improvements which we could make to our operations during the pandemic and I will try to answer and resolve the feedback points you have offered. Firstly, The swimming pool is maintained at a temperature of 80 F. This is in the gudiance set for the hotel. As we go into the winter months the pool can sometimes feel colder, however, we are unable to increase the temperature outside the set parameters as this provides a health & safety risk to bathers. I apologize you found the temperature to be cold during your visit. Secondly, I appreciate that some of our suites are in need of sprucing up and our maintenance team are working through suite per suite to address the types of issues that you mention (Dresser Units, Drawers, Correct stock of kitchenware etc). This is a lengthy process and once we have completed all 61 suites we will rotate through each suite again to continually find improvements which can be made. We share your frustration when it comes to breakfast, however, during the pandemic we are advised to reduce our offering to the simplified breakfast and I am working my hardest to ensure that guests are aware of the breakfast offering before their arrival at the hotel. With covid cases increasing across the country it does not seem likely that the traditional buffet breakfast will be returning until next year and likewise with the evening social. As hotels are working hard to survive it is important that we try not to lose sight of the reasons why our guests are choosing to come and stay with us. I understand that there are frustrations and management at the hotel is trying desperately to provide the best service in line with brand standards and budget guidelines. I understand that guests may see this as a cost reduction exercise, however, all hotels are walking a tightrope right now. However, there are certainly improvements that can be made for breakfast and the evening social. I often share discussions with other Hilton properties across the country and the self-select breakfast bag is a fantastic suggestion which I will be putting forward in further management meetings. We truly do appreciate your feedback from your stay and whilst we were unable to provide the top level service and quality you will expect of a Hilton branded property we will work endlessly to get this right and improve as the new year draws in. If you wish to get in contact with our Front Office Manager (Alexander Wall) please reach out to awall@hmphotels.com. Alex will be happy to discuss your questions and concerns with you. Warmest Regards.

I’ll start with to positive... the hotel staff all seemed very nice and always helpful. Any time we needed anything, they were very responsive. The location was also decent for the areas we visited. One of the front office we managers emailed a letter prior to our arrival... information that was no I’ve to know, but should have been sent prior to the cancellation deadline since several key offerings were not being offered at this time. It did seem like they were operating with a small crew. Now to the negatives... As another customer mentioned, the hotel should provide information on what is being offered/not offered due to covid. The breakfast was a high calorie muffin, fruit, granola bar, and a bottle of water. Coffee was available during the typical breakfast hour. One night we returned and someone had left stinky food by the over full garbage can next to the elevator and our room. We had to call to have it removed, as it sat there all evening, but staff did promptly remove it once we called. We stayed 6 nights and our room was not cleaned once!! We booked with 5 family members and not once did they provide enough towels. We were usually left 3 towels, occasionally 4. Although, One night, we returned from a long day out to the beach to find we’d been left NO towels! Suggestions... offer food vouchers instead of the breakfast in a bag being offered... or reduce the cost for the stay. If you are going to continue giving crumby muffins, perhaps run a vacuum mid stay. That should be expected. Surely Hilton has a program that can help housekeeping schedule the full cleaning rooms vs the towels and trash rooms. Also, if there are 5 people staying in a room, leave 5 towels and was cloths please! The poor beds... The fitted sheets are so worn they won’t stay in place and the tip sheets are too small so you are constantly digging back and forth for sheets all night. :(. We can’t wait to be home in our own beds to get quality sleep!I had to wipe down the headboard as there was blood or some brownish colored smear present on the headboard. We found hair left in the shower, so not sure how clean the rooms really are. We ate by next door at the Holiday Inn for dinner one night. Suggestion... stay there! When though we had to pay, kids meals were free, and took rates were much lower! Even my 8 year old stated he was upset with the room because of the bed sheets :( kids don’t typically pick up on that stuff. We’ve stayed at a Homewood suites before in Cincinnati near the airport and it was top notch compared to this location. We most likely will not be staying Hilton again.
