Though not the true B&B experience due to covid restrictions, we really enjoyed our stay at Chilton House. The house has been lovingly restored by the current co-owners - it was a real pleasure to meet one of them. We especially valued seeing all the family artifacts - as a previous reviewer remarked, it was moving. We appreciated having access to all the downstairs rooms (complete with sherry) - and the grounds were lovely. The location is excellent - just a few minutes walk from the nearest coffee shop (essential!) and plenty of other businesses in the historic district. We were happy to be able to use our breakfast voucher there. This is an old house - so it does creak at night, but is no noisier than your average motel. We look forward to staying there again on our next family visit to Warrenton.…
My husband and I love staying at B&B’s and have visited quite a few in Virginia (Richmond, Charlottesville, etc), and other places around the U.S. We stayed in the McDonnel Room at the Chilton House over Valentine’s weekend as we wanted to stay more local and live about 25 mins away. Let’s start from the beginning: we arrived a bit early on Saturday afternoon. We requested a 2:30pm early arrival, and arrived at 2:20pm, instead of the normal 3pm check-in time. We rang the ring doorbell at the main entrance, and were greeted by the inn keeper. The gentleman, James (Jim), that everyone had raved about as such a great innkeeper is no longer working there. The current innkeeper was a very sweet woman, who opened the door to us in her pijamas/sweat pants, and said that she wasn’t expecting us for another few minutes. She immediately walked us over to the main sitting room, and we made our payment for the one night we would be there ($175). She told us she was going to run to make sure our room was ready and that she would be right back. My husband and I were able to sit and walk around the main sitting room for at least 15 mins before she came back, and the entire room was covered in dust, from the mantle, to the tables and bookshelves, the glass in the coffee table was dirty, the place had not been swept or vacuumed adequately, etc. The innkeeper came back and told us she would take us around the home before she showed us our room. She took us into the kitchen, and showed us where we could find water, tea, coffee if we wanted to serve ourselves that evening. She commented that we shouldn’t pay attention to all the dirty dishes laying around the sink area because she had yet to clean them from the guests the night before. She then took us into the formal dining room, and again, more dirty dishes, glasses, on the dining tables, from the morning’s breakfast that had yet to be collected off the dining tables, and washed up. After viewing the sitting room, kitchen, and dining room, I was getting worried about what our room would look like! She took us to our room, and other than an extremely dirty bathroom mirror and one extremely long hair in the shower, I won’t complain much. 😑 My husband and I didn’t realize that although we paid to have a private bathroom in our room as part of our reservation, the other main bathroom is right outside the McDonnel Room, and you can hear every time someone takes a shower or goes to the bathroom. Literally hear every single thing from the McDonnel Room. My husband and I left the B&B around 6:30pm to walk and get dinner in old town Warrenton, and returned about 8:30pm to our room. Other than the frequent bathroom breaks we had to hear right outside our door and an incessantly barking dog (that we never asked about to determine if it was at an adjacent property or somewhere in the B&B), we were able to sleep. Breakfast the next morning, we had been told would be available from 8:30am to 10am. We got down to the dining room at 9:15am and we’re greeted by the innkeeper who had one other couple that she was attending to. Another couple came in shortly after us. We were served about 20 mins later with eggs/spinach/goat cheese combination that was runny and not fully cooked, sausage gravy and biscuits, and strawberry jam with cream. We would say this was definitely a substandard breakfast for all the B&B’s we have stayed in. Please note that I am NOT the complaining type. I wanted to leave an honest review so other people understand and realize what they will be paying for. For $175, my husband and I both agree we could have found another B&B or hotel that would have been much better, cleaner, and with better service. We also agree that the innkeeper, although very sweet, needs help around the home. There is no obvious groundskeeper taking care of the outside of the property (shutters hanging off windows, etc), and she needs help with all the cleaning, dusting, laundry, and food prep. This place could be much better if they invested in a more quality team of people to keep up with it. And in this case, you do not get what you pay for. Hope this review helps other travelers in deciding if they want to spend their money staying here. Good luck and safe travels!…
Reasonable mid week rates. Better than the "chains" nearby. Friendly innkeeper and immaculately clean all around. Very convenient to the courthouse and downtown eateries. This was my second stay at Chilton House and will definitely be back!
As always, James is the best Bed and Breakfast keeper! He is attentive, personable, and a wonderful breakfast chef!!! thanks again for the awesome stay. you make our VA gold cup the icing on the cake!
I am not a great fan of B&Bs, as most mornings copious amounts of coffee are required before anything other than a snarl passes my lips -- not exactly the B&B mindset. It was thus with some trepidation that I reserved a room at Chilton House while visiting my brother, who lived down the street in Warrenton. Surprisingly, I there had one of there best vacation experiences ever. Chilton House, nearly 200 years old, is a gem. Restored carefully and lovingly by the youngest generation of owners, the close-to-historical-downtown property is gorgeous, the house is charming while being historically significant (the family's heirlooms and tree, displayed therein, are actually moving), and the room was inviting and comfortable. The Innkeeper, James, was welcoming and gracious (who cannot enjoy great stories served with sherry in historical crystal), and a superb cook to boot. The owner, John, has done his lineage proud with a restoration which preserves the presence of history with no modern amenities lacking. Did I mention that the house is a perfect base from which to enjoy everything from great food and drink and light shopping within walking distance, to a short drive to see everything from Civil War battlefields, to get Virginia vineyards, to Washington DC? Well, there you have it! Chilton House was a wonderful surprise. I shall return!…
We have spent 5 nights at the Chilton House and it has been like been at home, although we were to 6,000 kms from our real home. The taste and feeling while been there has been warm and confortable. The historic House and hos is mantained helps, but the personalised work of James really is the best complement for this experience. If yoy want to be like at home, the Chilton is a great option. Thanks James!!
We really enjoyed our 3 day stay at this historic B&B in the quaint town of Warrenton. Innkeeper, “Saint” James Blunt made it feel like we just came home. Along with his awesome hospitality and breakfasts, his knowledge of the Chilton family’s history and the area was amazing. Thank you James for a wonderful getaway!!!! God Bless, Larry & Becci Stair (Spring Grove, Pa.)
I was in town on business. I had a late arrival, but James the Innkeeper called ahead to make sure my arrival was smooth, even though I was due in at 1am. Not only did I learn a lot about the home, but also the town. Thanks, James!
My new husband and I were given a night here for our "LOVE" sign unveiling wedding that we won!! It was such a great experience, thanks to Innkeeper James Blunt! We were in awe of the history there and simply loved staying in the Hearst's room over-looking the sunrise. DELICIOUS pancakes , yogurt, coffee ..in our private breakfast nook! ( see pic) I recommend this charming , comfy beautiful B&B!!! AND..walk over to the LOVE sign and snap a photo!!
Breakfast will be waiting for you every morning 9am sharp. Brandy will be waiting for you every evening at your request. Very very relaxing B&B. The rooms had a royal feel to them and the service was excellent, especially James Blunt!
