Detailed Reviews
Our stay at The Chilton House was superb. Warrenton is a beautiful town and The Chilton House is situated in the Historic District within easy walking distance to dining and historic attractions. We chose this property as it was ideal as a jumping off point to other area attractions. My wife is a photographer and there was so much for her to see during our day trips.
James, the Inkeeper, is engaging and attentive..... always professional and a resource for interpreting the property and giving advice about the region at large.
The service is first rate and this historic home is beautiful. If you are traveling and staying over anywhere in the region, The Chilton House should be high on your list.

We stayed in the McDonnell room for three nights in June 2018. The home has a wonderful 200 year history and is filled with family antiques. James is a terrific innkeeper who could answer all of our questions about local sites and proved to be fascinating to talk with on a wide range of topics. It is centrally located to historic sites we visited (Belle Grove Plantation, the Montpelier estate and Manassas Battlefield National Park). We would stay here again when we are in the area.

Six college friends landed at the Chilton House for a mini reunion and going to wineries in the area. We were warmly greeted by James and he gave us a brief history of the property. It's a great house. We had free rein in most of it - living room, library, bedrooms, butler's panty, and of course our rooms. Everything was top notch. The beds were great. We had use of the frig for all of our food we were taking to the wineries. We stayed 3 nights and had a wonderful time. I would definitely go back - and do more vineyards!

James, our innkeeper, told me what a great time meeting you and your college friends during your 3 night Country House party. I am particularly grateful for the helpful suggestions you made and which James relayed to me. Why not make it an annual event? We'd love to have you back at Chilton House! Yours, John Chilton Proprietor

My husband and I love staying at B&B’s and have visited quite a few in Virginia (Richmond, Charlottesville, etc), and other places around the U.S. We stayed in the McDonnel Room at the Chilton House over Valentine’s weekend as we wanted to stay more local and live about 25 mins away. Let’s start from the beginning: we arrived a bit early on Saturday afternoon. We requested a 2:30pm early arrival, and arrived at 2:20pm, instead of the normal 3pm check-in time. We rang the ring doorbell at the main entrance, and were greeted by the inn keeper. The gentleman, James (Jim), that everyone had raved about as such a great innkeeper is no longer working there. The current innkeeper was a very sweet woman, who opened the door to us in her pijamas/sweat pants, and said that she wasn’t expecting us for another few minutes. She immediately walked us over to the main sitting room, and we made our payment for the one night we would be there ($175). She told us she was going to run to make sure our room was ready and that she would be right back. My husband and I were able to sit and walk around the main sitting room for at least 15 mins before she came back, and the entire room was covered in dust, from the mantle, to the tables and bookshelves, the glass in the coffee table was dirty, the place had not been swept or vacuumed adequately, etc. The innkeeper came back and told us she would take us around the home before she showed us our room. She took us into the kitchen, and showed us where we could find water, tea, coffee if we wanted to serve ourselves that evening. She commented that we shouldn’t pay attention to all the dirty dishes laying around the sink area because she had yet to clean them from the guests the night before. She then took us into the formal dining room, and again, more dirty dishes, glasses, on the dining tables, from the morning’s breakfast that had yet to be collected off the dining tables, and washed up. After viewing the sitting room, kitchen, and dining room, I was getting worried about what our room would look like! She took us to our room, and other than an extremely dirty bathroom mirror and one extremely long hair in the shower, I won’t complain much. 😑 My husband and I didn’t realize that although we paid to have a private bathroom in our room as part of our reservation, the other main bathroom is right outside the McDonnel Room, and you can hear every time someone takes a shower or goes to the bathroom. Literally hear every single thing from the McDonnel Room. My husband and I left the B&B around 6:30pm to walk and get dinner in old town Warrenton, and returned about 8:30pm to our room. Other than the frequent bathroom breaks we had to hear right outside our door and an incessantly barking dog (that we never asked about to determine if it was at an adjacent property or somewhere in the B&B), we were able to sleep. Breakfast the next morning, we had been told would be available from 8:30am to 10am. We got down to the dining room at 9:15am and we’re greeted by the innkeeper who had one other couple that she was attending to. Another couple came in shortly after us. We were served about 20 mins later with eggs/spinach/goat cheese combination that was runny and not fully cooked, sausage gravy and biscuits, and strawberry jam with cream. We would say this was definitely a substandard breakfast for all the B&B’s we have stayed in. Please note that I am NOT the complaining type. I wanted to leave an honest review so other people understand and realize what they will be paying for. For $175, my husband and I both agree we could have found another B&B or hotel that would have been much better, cleaner, and with better service. We also agree that the innkeeper, although very sweet, needs help around the home. There is no obvious groundskeeper taking care of the outside of the property (shutters hanging off windows, etc), and she needs help with all the cleaning, dusting, laundry, and food prep. This place could be much better if they invested in a more quality team of people to keep up with it. And in this case, you do not get what you pay for. Hope this review helps other travelers in deciding if they want to spend their money staying here. Good luck and safe travels!

Thanks for your comments Rachael, I enjoyed chatting with you about your experience back in March and truly value authentic feedback. Your experience with us was not acceptable, and I had hoped to invite you back in April for another try, but of course, then COVID interfered! However, we are opening on Friday, so I hope you have time to come join us sometime this summer. I wanted to share a few things we have done to address your concerns. We have gone through a mutual staff transition, and are working with cleaning professionals to address the needs of the time we are in. We have also taken soundproofing measures for our rooms, and moved to a suite model to give each room more privacy and space. The biggest improvement we hope you'll enjoy is our grounds, where we've renovated the outbuildings, and built a patio for your enjoyment! The team at Blue Ridge Property Services does a great job taking care of the grounds March-November, so I'm sure you'll see a remarkable difference from the way things look in the Wintertime. I hope you and your family are safe and well, and I look forward to seeing you again soon! John

We celebrated my husbands birthday at the Chilton House and from beginning to end James was amazing. He went above and beyond to make sure our stay was perfect. His attention to detail is rare and greatly appreciated. Our bed was comfy and breakfast was amazing! The perfect blend of Bed & Breakfast. The beautiful, historic home is located within walking distance of the town and all if has to offer. I would highly recommend this property and look forward to a return visit!

We really enjoyed our 3 day stay at this historic B&B in the quaint town of Warrenton. Innkeeper, “Saint” James Blunt made it feel like we just came home. Along with his awesome hospitality and breakfasts, his knowledge of the Chilton family’s history and the area was amazing. Thank you James for a wonderful getaway!!!! God Bless, Larry & Becci Stair (Spring Grove, Pa.)

We went to Warrenton to have a quiet two days to recharge and this B&B fit the bill. It is within walking distance of the downtown shop, restaurants and bars. The historic house it beautiful with grounds to sit and read or have a drink. The rooms are clean, the bed comfortable, breakfast is delicious and James is a charming host. He will provide recommendations for places to see in town if needed. Could not ask for anything else. Highly recommend.

I cannot begin to express how amazing our stay was at this prestige, historical house filled with character! James was such a delight and made us feel like family from the moment we walked up to the doorstep! I must say he is one heck of a cook and you won’t leave disappointed at all. We stayed in the Blackwell room, which was adorable and suiting for us. The vibes of the house were very relaxing and comforting. It’s as if we walked into a time capsule of elegance. We want to take this moment to thank James and the folks of The Chilton House for giving us this opportunity to experience such a beautiful, peaceful stay.
Everything was within walking distance and the restaurants in the area are amazing! If you are vegan or vegetarian, there are some restaurants that offer these options as well. Also, there is a trail very near by for a nice stroll or run. I highly encourage others to stay here if in the Warrenton, VA area! We will definitely be returning in the near future!!!!!

Dear Emily, It was very gratifying to read your complimentary review of our team's warm and genuine brand of hospitality and the many historic aspects of our 5th generation family home. It sounds like you really enjoyed our location in the heart of town that allowed you to walk no more than about 3-5 short blocks to neighboring shops, cafés, historical museum, greenbelt hiking and biking path, and a variety of good restaurants. Hope to see you back in Old Town soon! John Chilton Proprietor

Though not the true B&B experience due to covid restrictions, we really enjoyed our stay at Chilton House. The house has been lovingly restored by the current co-owners - it was a real pleasure to meet one of them. We especially valued seeing all the family artifacts - as a previous reviewer remarked, it was moving. We appreciated having access to all the downstairs rooms (complete with sherry) - and the grounds were lovely. The location is excellent - just a few minutes walk from the nearest coffee shop (essential!) and plenty of other businesses in the historic district. We were happy to be able to use our breakfast voucher there.
This is an old house - so it does creak at night, but is no noisier than your average motel. We look forward to staying there again on our next family visit to Warrenton.
