Good for walkers
Places to stay are graded on a 0-100 scale. The higher the grade, the easier it is for travelers to find restaurants and things to do within walking distance.
Staffing shortage delayed our check by an hour and a half. There is one slow elevator for 12 floors. Wifi can be unavailable when high demand. No bathroom toiletries are provided beyond soap and the towels are VERY low quality. The tub is a high sided jacuzzi, which could be an issue for persons with mobility issues. The hotel/resort is outdated in general. The rooms are small and I found the living room to have too much furniture for the space. The kitchen is well equipped. I cannot speak to the housekeeping. There is a door hanger to be used to request cleaning. We were there only 2 nights and chose to forgo housekeeping. There is free parking although the garage is very close quarters making parking challenging. Overall, there was nothing about 4 Sails that wowed me, but it did offer a clean beachfront room. The quality per price is questionable.

My husband and I are locals, who had a time share week to utilize prior to the end of March. We opted for a "staycation" at Four Sails, as it is 30 minutes from our home. There were other local, oceanfront choices, but the direct beach front location of Four Sails proved enticing. I had studied the reviews, both good and bad, prior to selecting the time share. I must say, I was very happy with our choice. Yes, the "resort" is older, but the unit was very clean, with particular attention paid to sanitization of dishware and the like. We had a one bedroom unit on the 8th floor; the view of the ocean and boardwalk was mesmerizing. One has a full water view from the living room and bedroom. As the weather was mild, I was able to open the doors for a seabreeze and the lull of the waves. We witnessed amazing sunrises, graced by dolphins, seabirds and an interesting variety of sailing vessels. Excellent restaurants are within strolling distance. As I am a local who has resided in Hampton Roads for 50+ years, I can attest that any vacationer could benefit from the proximity of Four Sails to all things fun. The parking garage is definitely "unique" and took a bit of navigation. Extra large vehicles will be challenged: I drive an older, Ford Explorer and had to choose spaces I knew I could exit easily. That being said I never had a problem finding a space, perhaps because it is off season? The building was well populated, despite it being March, so maybe this is fairly typical. In conclusion, if you are looking for "fancy", this is probably not your choice. The negative reviews I had read spoke to the "dated" nature of the resort. I found it to be charming: I was there to see the ocean, not furniture. (Which is NOT bad, by the way!) The staff were all kind and polite. I even received a call from housekeeping, to make sure everything was to our liking. And it absolutely was. I was actually sad to leave... but I guess that's the sign of a good vacation, right?

Housekeeping needs to clean food splatters off of refrigerator exterior. It gives the impression that the rest of the unit may not be thoroughly cleaned either. Housekeeping should have removed a plastic bag on the balcony that was filled with cigarette garbage (what appeared to be hundreds of cigarette butts and empty cigarette packs). The bag was blown around during a storm early in the week and some of the garbage was spread out on the balcony. The living room ceiling began leaking water, with pieces falling down, in several places during a storm. Pieces of ceiling had fallen on some of the electronic equipment that we brought with us before we realized what was happening. We had to move it all to an area of the unit that didn't show any leaks in the ceiling. We reported it to the front desk, but it sounded like it was a regular occurrence.

My wife and I have been coming to the four sails for the last 15 yrs or so for our anniversary. Most of the times we never had a problem in the past we would usually have a problem with the Jacuzzi not working this time the jacuzzi is fine we rented a movie to watch and it would only play in black & white we called for maintenance they responded very quickly the first thing he replaced the DVD player that didn’t help he checked all the cables next he tried other DVDs they all played in black & white so he replaced the TV that finally fixed the problem. Ok we got off to a rocky start of our vacation. The room didn’t seam to be as spacious as the other times we were here but we never stayed on the 8th floor before we were always much higher up in the building. The room is still very clean but the sliding doors to the balcony’s need two men and a boy to open them think they could lube them up a bit. Ok we get over all that and today we had thunderstorms and our living room turned into a lake we had to put 9 bath towels down so we didn’t fall we had no other way to take care of the problem we called maintenance again and again they were there very quickly and just handed us 8 clean bath towels and No one spoken words said give it hell guy and we were on our own to clean up the mess. At this time I would have expected them to change our room since all the rooms got water in them due to the open air balcony courtyard on that floor and it was like a small lake I guess the drain could not handle all that water at once. This could not be the first time this happened I am sure. Since they don’t look like they are going to change the room and we are here till the end of the week. I hope it doesn’t happen again on Thursday since thunderstorms are called for again then. They said they were going to send someone up to clean up the mess but never did. So like the others in the other rooms did we tossed the soaked towels out the front door for someone to deal with. The Immediate fix was to put some towels in front of the front door. We will see if anything is taken off the cost of the room since changing the room does not seem to be an option to to hotel. It may be time to start looking for a better place to stay from now on. This building is just getting very run down and doesn’t seem like it’s getting upgraded. A few yrs ago they replace the carpet in the hallways but they are all stained again so I guess they don’t clean them often. It’s the little things that can be done to show they take pride in the place that are not being done. I would think this water problem should have been addressed long ago instead of just saying it was just a lot of rain that came down very quickly after all the place is on the ocean and would be expected to happen from time to time. See pictures that I posted of the towels all over the floor.

We have been traveling to Four Sails many times over the past 25 years. They all were good and the few times we had issues they were resolved immediately. This year we arrived there to find we had no reservations according to Four Sails and when I showed the confirmation the lady didn't believe me but we were given a room. The kitchen had a fluorescent light that flickered continually, an AC unit that every time the compressor came on had a high pitched annoying sound, a microwave that didn't work and a dishwasher that didn't wash dishes. The microwave and light were replaced but we were told there was nothing they could do about the AC and dishwasher. we handwashed dishes and several days the 85-90 degree heat, we had only a fan running. The second day I requested we be moved to another working room but I was told they were full. Three different workers told me they were at 40% capacity and the garage was over half empty so someone was not being honest. Every single front desk worked did not know how to handle any situation and each one made it clear they were new and did not know what to do. I sent an email to the general manager, Nathan Bosher, about our missing reservation since we had reservations for next year which Four Sails said they also did not have. I never received a response from him. The second day there I also asked to speak to Mr Bosher and again, no response. We had two weeks paid for but after one week we decided to leave. This was the first time in more than 25 years of coming there we could not take any more of the resort. To top things off when we left today we were told we had a $31 charge. When I asked what it was for she said she didn't know. We did not pay the charge since we were not given an itemized bill. A very serious safety and security issue at the resort is sometime during the night ALL doors on the ground level are locked and guests are not allowed to leave the resort via the first floor. They must go to the second floor parking garage and leave thru there. This was according to the lady at the front desk at 4am on May 12 2024. This is truly a scary situation for all guests if an emergency occurs. I am still waiting for Mr Bosher to contact me regarding the issues this year as well as the issue with my missing reservation for next year. And something needs to be done about the safety issue for guests if an emergency occurs.

After reading great reviews and not so great reviews, we were a little apprehensive on how our trip was going to go. We are not picky travelers and know sometimes a resort may need some updating but our main thing is location and how the staff treats their guest. Both of these meet our expectations. Upon our arrival, Zachary was very helpful in checking us in and giving us some recommendations of places to eat. Our room was a corner room, so we had a view of the ocean and a view of the city. We loved waking up to the sunrise and going to sleep with the lights of the city. We never felt it was too loud as some people mentioned. Our housekeeper Sherri was amazing. Very kind and polite, always checking on us and asking if we needed anything. It was nice to walk and bike the boardwalk every morning and hang out on the beach every day. The beach is extremely clean and no cost to get on, which was nice. We are definitely returning to The Four Sails Resort in the future.

I brought my daughter for a mother daughter trip for a week. It was also her 30+ birthday. Our unit was very clean. The first day we determined the a/c unit in the living room was not cooling. We informed our maid who immediately contacted maintenance and they were in the room within 10 minutes. Within another 15 minutes they determined it needed replaced and went to get another. They were back in the room within 20 minutes and replaced the unit within a matter of minutes. This equals great service in my opinion. The maid, I believe her name is Mannette, deserves more than a mention. She was amazing, timely every day, pleasant, and always wearing a smile. The exterior of the building, hallways, and windows of the doors and restaurant could all use a good scrubbing. We ate a couple times at the restaurant and everything was really good. The location is awesome and is right on the boardwalk and beach. All of the staff was very friendly with great service. Thank you for making our vacation enjoyable and stress-free, we will be back!

Now to the not so good news… The Four Sails is completely in need of a renovation as everything is old and dated. We walked into room #302 and it smelled of old fish/crab, plus we stuck to the floor. The view was great except the awful smear marks from whatever cleaning agent they used. The bed was difficult to sleep on as it was extremely firm and if you moved at all, expect a distinct noise coming from underneath.
Free bikes were great, but need to be updated… my bike even had a flat tire. I seriously have never been to a “timeshare” type of ‘resort’ that I had to use coin laundry. Most all RESORTS that we have stayed in had laundry inside the unit or had free laundry facilities on site.
The unit was very small… seemed rather crowded. The absolute worse part of the Four Sails, DO NOT expect to get a goodnight sleep. You hear everything… it sounded like someone was moving furniture above us but later found out, it was every time they opened up the patio door. Unfortunately the folks staying above us smoked and they had to get their fix every half an hour.
All-in-all, we will remove the Four Sails from our list of must do again and it’s a shame as the location was perfect!

This is time share hotel which means when I book my room it’s fully paid for in advance. When I checked in the past Charleen checked me in and charged my card again for the full price along with incidental l. When I seen in my account that I was charged again I went to the front where I spoke with Johanna she told me it’s nothing they can do and to call my bank and dispute it. When I said I request for a refund for the second charge she was rude and nasty to the point my daughter thought she was yelling at me. When I asked to speak a manager she told me “come back in the morning they’re gone. When I came to the front desk another agent was there by the name Shae she was very polite and apologetic and gave corporate’s number to speak with someone on refunding my money. Honestly if I wouldn’t have spoke with her or had another encounter, I would cancelled my reservation for the rest only my stay.

Four Sails is an older building (elevators, hallways, etc.) but the location, views and the unit far out weigh the negative. We enjoyed our stay very much and LOVED the double, adjoining balcony of the living area and bedroom. If you like jacuzzi tubs, our unit had the biggest one I have ever seen. Clear view of the dolphins swimming by and fun people watching from the balcony. Shawnie had the front desk was the best!
