We had the good fortune to stay during a “foodie weekend” (so were served both breakfast and dinner). We dined under the stars (and in the mornings) with a beautiful view of the mountains, luxuriated in the traditional-style japanese baths, and were met with warmth, friendliness, and hospitality at every turn. Thanks again!
My wife and I had a very relaxing weekend at Pembroke Springs Retreat. We enjoyed the baths very much; the breakfasts were delicious and just the right amount of food. We booked the Sunrise room in order to try out the horigotatsu. In addition to relaxing at the B&B, we went hiking in the snow and had dinner in Strasburg and Winchester.
We would love to go to Japan and stay at a ryokan, but I am a teacher and have limited time to take off for traveling. How lovely to be able to stay at a bed and breakfast, about 1 1/2 hours from Northern Virginia, and wear a yukata (not worrying about what clothes to pack), go hiking during the day, soak in a heated, spring-fed onsen at night (and/or during the day), eat a delicious and nutritious delightful breakfast every morning... ahhh... lovely place.
This review is long overdue, but was prompted by my desire to visit Pembroke Springs again this year. My husband and I stayed in the Sunrise room for one evening (we loved how similar it was to a ryoken we stayed in while honeymooning in Japan). The room and private bathroom were very large with plenty of amenities to provide a relaxing stay. Prior to our stay, Lisa reached out to confirm details with us - this was very much appreciated! When we arrived, she gave us a tour of the common rooms and baths. The baths were delightful; they were in large rooms with showers and soaps to rinse off prior to getting in the bath (I remember really liking the soaps). The common areas have quiet spaces for reading or playing games. We did not stay during one of their Foodie Weekends, but were treated to a delicious curry dinner made by Lisa's brother. This is not a regular thing, so check prior to your stay to see if dinners are offered. If not, there are some great restaurants in nearby towns. We had a traditional Japanese breakfast that was also delicious. Overall, the location is beautiful, the customer service provided by Lisa and her family is unmatched, and everything about Pembroke Springs encourages relaxation. Can't wait to go back soon.…
My wife and I went here to celebrate our 30th anniversary, not knowing what to expect from a Japanese B&B. It turned out to be perfect getaway. The retreat was founded by a state department diplomat and his Japanese wife and is now run with help of their children. The Japanese breakfast is fantastic, as are the Japanese baths. It is a great location from which to hike. The atmosphere is very low key, child friendly, no televisions, limited WiFi. They cooked dinner one night which was wonderful but check when booking.
