Small, upscale bed and breakfast in the historic district of South Boston, Virginia. The Victorian home was built in 1904 by Charles Bass, hence its name. It is a half-mile walk to downtown with shops, restaurants and churches. And it is easy driving distances to The Prizery Community Arts Center, Southern Virginia Higher Education Center, South Boston Speedway, Virginia International Raceway and other venues.
We visited, passing through town, on New Year's Eve. My husband, 8-year-old, and I arrived at check-in to a warm and inviting home, decorated for the holidays, with nice music playing in the background. Our Host, John, greeted us and showed us our room (the suite) where we left our bags. He then granted our request for a tour of the historic property. John made us feel very much at home. The accommodations were very comfortable - bedding, linens, and towels, wonderful large shower with fantastic water pressure. Everything was very clean. We enjoyed a wonderful breakfast in the dining room before departing the following morning.

Read all the previous guests' reviews. Many of the wonderful attributes of this B&B have already been described so I will endeavor not to be too repetitive. John has created an exemplary B&B within his meticulously restored and maintained Victorian home. Although John was not at home when I arrived, I was greeted by Jazz music softly playing throughout the common areas. I felt very much at home enjoying the sunroom and the refreshments offered. My two-room suite with a private bath was well appointed and meticulously clean. The bed was extremely comfortable with crisply ironed sheets. I look forward to staying there again!

Lovely Victorian house B&B, super clean, bed super comfortable, and breakfast was delicious French Toast, bacon and fruit. It has spoiled me for ever staying in a boring or questionable hotel again. The host is friendly and helpful but quiet and unobtrusive, so you feel like you have a new private home! I truly could not think of anything I’d change or improve here. Perfection! My only hesitation is more folks will know how wonderful it is and book up all the dates 😁.

Wonderful place and John is a marvelous host. I liked it as he has only two rooms available and lives on site … so feels extra homey. The house is lovely … stained glass windows etc.. Breakfast yummy … I only wish we could have stayed longer!

John is a great host. He is relaxed and makes you feel perfectly "at home" in his B&B. He even allowed me to stay all afternoon in his home because my husband was out on a business call until late afternoon! The room was spacious, quiet and comfortable, breakfast was plentiful and delicious and wine and snacks were provided the evening before. I could not ask for more! Thank you so much, John!

We stayed in the large suite and loved everything about our stay. The room was just right. We didn't use the hot tub, but it's a nice bonus. Great breakfast & a very nice host. If you are in the area, we highly recommend!

This was my second visit to the Charles Bass House. Just like the first time, it was perfect. Though I was in town for a friend's family reunion, it was nice to come back to the CB house where I could unwind. The hot tub was the perfect temperature and truly removed the stress from my muscles. The deck was perfect for catching some rays without being on public display. The suite was very spacious and comfortable. The breakfast (fresh mango, french toast, bacon and beverages) was a great start to my day. As we are in a pandemic, John wore his mask, and so did I. And the smell of cleanlilness filled the air. Instead of feeling like I was in a hotel, I felt like I was a special guest in someone's house. John is the most gracious host and has thought of every detail, even in this challenged environment. I can't wait to go back. Thank you John, for making my stay a slice of paradise.…

From the beautiful, well-appointed rooms to the gorgeous backyard deck and plantings, it is clear that the owner and host, John, puts much care and thought into this lovely gem of a B&B. The whole experience was a delight.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and felt as comfortable in this beautiful home as if we were in our own home. The hostess’s cordial and gracious hospitality added a distinguishable touch when compared with other places. A highlight of the stay includes a health conscious well prepared breakfast meal from a menu of freshly baked muffins, toasts, bacon, eggs of choice, fresh fruit, juice, and freshly brewed coffee and/or tea. Breakfast is served in a large colonial dining room tastefully decorated all lending to a beautiful experience. Relaxing amenities such as a hot tub, sun/reading room, a library of good reads and sounds of soft easy listening music coaxes you to extend your stay for another day of enjoyment. A great getaway or stop in South Central Virginia.

Find your way to the beautiful Charles Bass house in South Boston, VA. The house is beautiful and gracious. The rooms are beautifully furnished and extremely comfortable. I stayed in the lovely first floor suite which included an adjoining bathroom and large sitting room with TV. The bedroom is spacious and there is plenty of room to store clothes and luggage. The bed is delightful. John is the consummate host. He is a good communicator and welcomes any questions or clarifications about the reservations. He makes a wonderful breakfast each morning. The hot tub is an extra treat especially on cool fall evenings. Thanks John for a great stay!
