Small, upscale bed and breakfast in the historic district of South Boston, Virginia. The Victorian home was built in 1904 by Charles Bass, hence its name. It is a half-mile walk to downtown with shops, restaurants and churches. And it is easy driving distances to The Prizery Community Arts Center, Southern Virginia Higher Education Center, South Boston Speedway, Virginia International Raceway and other venues.

Detailed Reviews
John is a great host. He is relaxed and makes you feel perfectly "at home" in his B&B. He even allowed me to stay all afternoon in his home because my husband was out on a business call until late afternoon! The room was spacious, quiet and comfortable, breakfast was plentiful and delicious and wine and snacks were provided the evening before. I could not ask for more! Thank you so much, John!

Read all the previous guests' reviews. Many of the wonderful attributes of this B&B have already been described so I will endeavor not to be too repetitive. John has created an exemplary B&B within his meticulously restored and maintained Victorian home. Although John was not at home when I arrived, I was greeted by Jazz music softly playing throughout the common areas. I felt very much at home enjoying the sunroom and the refreshments offered. My two-room suite with a private bath was well appointed and meticulously clean. The bed was extremely comfortable with crisply ironed sheets. I look forward to staying there again!

This was my second visit to the Charles Bass House. Just like the first time, it was perfect. Though I was in town for a friend's family reunion, it was nice to come back to the CB house where I could unwind. The hot tub was the perfect temperature and truly removed the stress from my muscles. The deck was perfect for catching some rays without being on public display. The suite was very spacious and comfortable. The breakfast (fresh mango, french toast, bacon and beverages) was a great start to my day.
As we are in a pandemic, John wore his mask, and so did I. And the smell of cleanlilness filled the air.
Instead of feeling like I was in a hotel, I felt like I was a special guest in someone's house. John is the most gracious host and has thought of every detail, even in this challenged environment. I can't wait to go back.
Thank you John, for making my stay a slice of paradise.

+1
Lovely Victorian house B&B, super clean, bed super comfortable, and breakfast was delicious French Toast, bacon and fruit. It has spoiled me for ever staying in a boring or questionable hotel again. The host is friendly and helpful but quiet and unobtrusive, so you feel like you have a new private home! I truly could not think of anything I’d change or improve here. Perfection! My only hesitation is more folks will know how wonderful it is and book up all the dates 😁.

This bed and breakfast was delightful! Gorgeous historic house, we had a beautiful bedroom suite with a spotless bathroom, comfortable bed and wonderful furnishings. John, the host, could not have been more accomodating and the breakfast he made was delicious. We so enjoyed the hot tub the evening that we arrived! I would go out of my way to stay at this inn again.

Wonderful place and John is a marvelous host. I liked it as he has only two rooms available and lives on site … so feels extra homey. The house is lovely … stained glass windows etc.. Breakfast yummy … I only wish we could have stayed longer!

We were visiting family and friends on our recent round-trip, road trip north. We made reservations to meet friends at a great restaurant in Halifax and wanted lodging nearby. We were delighted to have found the Charles Bass House. Not only was it a beautiful mansion, the accommodations were absolutely delightful. Our host was most welcoming and generous with available beverages and an ambiance to enjoy a peaceful time after a very long drive. Our room was quite comfortable, expansive and exceeded our expectations. We wanted an early start upon departure and John prepared our breakfast as we dined in an elegant setting. We would highly recommend a stay at the Charles Bass House and intent to stay again when we travel on our next road trip into Virginia.

We stayed in the large suite and loved everything about our stay. The room was just right. We didn't use the hot tub, but it's a nice bonus. Great breakfast & a very nice host. If you are in the area, we highly recommend!

I enjoyed two trips to the Charles Bass house. It's a beautiful 19 century home surrounded by well manicured lawn's and stately Oaks.
Our host, John, bent over backwards to make everything perfect for us. I'm allergic to wheat, and he provided home-baked gluten-free muffins!
On the first occasion we stayed downstairs in the suite, with our own bath. On the second occasion, I stayed in a room upstairs, with a shared bath. Both accommodations were wonderful, and the treatment I received as a guest was gracious and relaxing.
There are other, larger, places to stay in South Boston, but I would strongly urge visitors to consider the Charles Bass house as the first choice.

We were looking for a weekend runaway with total relaxation, without a long commute. The Charles Bass House fit the bill in every category. John was the perfect host, with tips of restaurants, activities and must sees in the area. The downstairs suite was awesome, the breakfast table spread with fresh fruit, morning paper, and hot served meals were delightful. The evenings in the hot tub were just what we needed after a day out adventuring and eating the local cuisine. We will definitely be back and have already shared this hide-away with our friends. Thanks John and Raisin for a perfect weekend.
