This is a lovely old inn. Most of the rooms are suites & very comfortable. The amenities are generous. Staff is very helpfull & friendly. The breakfast is tasty. We were a group who rented about 6 rooms & they were able to accommodate all of us at one time, as they suggested doing the breakfast family style. That turned...

Had a nice visit in this old Victorian converted to a B&B. The rooms were big and spacious.Furniture was comfortable and the bed was big and comfy. The bathroom was a nice size although the shower was a bit small. The room was stocked with drinks and snacks which was nice. Because the inn is on a busy road, a...

Had the experience of dining there for the first time last weekend in their small and elegant dining room. Our server was the best ever anywhere and the food was fantastic. Ordered a bottle of Ruffin 2014 Moscato d'Asti for $32. The next day we were in Farm Fresh in Suffolk and the identical bottle was $14 and some change....

We have made this a destination place every time we were in Williamsburg. Many many times. Lunches have been great and made the trip worthwhile. Prices have always until now been fair. However, the pricing is starting to cause us to think about making the trip. A bowl of She Crab soup is now $10. and not a very big...

The room was nicely done with antiques and modern features. The location is perfect for exploring Smithfield. The staff were helpful and hard working. They are locals who add local suggestions for things to do. They kept the room stocked with water and snacks. They kept us in ice and glasses every night.

My wife and I took the ferry over to Smithfield yesterday (Aug 24) and we wound up at the Smithfield Inn for lunch. We have been here several times before and it never disappoints. Loads of outdoor and indoor seating available. After a long hot spell we were happy to enjoy the indoor seating in the tavern area. Our server...

Surprised at how nice it is. The bar area was popular with families as the food offerings are slightly more casual there. There was live music the night we were there ( a Sat). We sat in the main restaurant. White table cloths, yet we were dressed casually and did not feel out of place. The food was good. I...

I had luncheon at the Smithfield Inn with a group of 10 friends. Out of the 10 people, only 3 of the lunches were edible. I had a meatball sub and it was to salty to eat! I had onion rings that had a tasty crust, but they were served cold and the onions used were old and tough. You...

Stopped by for a cocktail and an appetizer before dinner. "Nicki" was in charge of the bar. Ordered a couple drinks that were excellent! Ten minutes later, ordered some lite food choices. Oysters Rockefeller was one of the items. Fifteen minutes pass....while we sat and waited, a birthday celebration began at the END OF THE BAR were 5 servers had...

First of all, the Smithfield Inn is undoubtedly the oldest place in the USA where I have slept and the experience was quite positive, but the inn is old, dating to 1752, so let's take that into consideration. I stayed in the George Washington suite for two nights, mid- week and enjoyed it. The AC worked fine. The suite is...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
“He was a very valiant man who first ventured on eating oysters.” ~ James I Here’s one for the books. The Smithfield Inn, built in 1752, is older than The Alamo or even Independence Hall in Philadelphia. George Washington slept here (No really, he did.) Here’s the whole amazing story. At the time of groundbreaking, Smithfield’s bustling wharf harbor had become a popular destination for clipper ships bringing goods from the old world to the new. The reason? They could return loaded down with two new world delicacies—the hams and peanuts that have made Smithfield world famous. To serve these travelers and others coming over the main stagecoach route from Norfolk to Richmond and eventually steamboat and motorcar, the original residence was converted to an Inn and Tavern in 1759. Thus began over 250 years of southern hospitality and charm that still defines the “Old Inn on Main Street”. Notable changes along the way included raising the roof to a full second story in 1870, part of bringing the Inn back from disrepair after the Civil War, and a major renovation by the Sykes family in 1922, adding the long kitchen and dining room wing and enlarging the porch across the entire front. For 40 years the Sykes Inn was known for its signature home cooked meals and relaxed atmosphere. Today the owner of the Smithfield Inn, Smithfield Foods, welcome you to a new Smithfield Inn, beautifully renovated yet, as always, steeped in tradition and charm reminiscent of simpler times in the genteel old South. ... more   less
