The Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center, Curio Collection by Hilton, is often celebrated for its prime location and the exceptional service provided by its staff, who are commended for their professionalism and attentiveness. While the hotel's atmosphere is lauded for its fusion of historical allure and contemporary sophistication, some guests feel that the value proposition is marred by high costs associated with parking and other services. Opinions on the rooms are polarized—praised for cleanliness and comfort by some, yet criticized for being outdated or small by others. Despite the hotel's historic charm and diverse amenities, certain guests suggest that attention to detail in both cleanliness and upkeep would enhance the overall experience.

The Hotel Roanoke is a beautiful and historic hotel in downtown Roanoke. I have stayed at this hotel numerous times and my experience with the staff and the accommodations has always been the very best.

However, this review is about the staff of The Hotel Roanoke. Specifically, Megan Jackson and Brian Wells who were the best of the best that I have experienced at any hotel. They were accommodating and communicated during the process of resolving my request. It was a bit complicated to no fault of their own, but were so pleasant and went above and beyond to assist me. They were rock stars and I cannot recommend them and The Hotel Roanoke enough. The very best experience ever!

We are frequent visitors to the Hotel Roanoke because we have family in the area. We enjoy staying in an historic property with access to downtown Roanoke. We enjoyed our recent stay but hotels have had to make adjustments because of the corona virus. As Hilton honors members, we usually stay in the Executive level which gives you access to a hospitality room with beverages, breakfast, and evening refreshments. Due to construction at the hotel, this level is not available until at least September 2020. Half of the lobby is blocked off by the Pine Room but there was still ample seating in the available part of the lobby. The biggest change we found was that there is no longer automatic cleaning of your hotel room. This was not mentioned when we checked in and we found out the hard way when we came back to our room on our second day and saw it had not been cleaned. We had to call for towels and coffee supplies. Fortunately, my husband requested two days of supplies so we did not have to call again the next day. We felt they should have told us this when we checked in and should have had a supply request list that we could have hung on our door. The pool was nice and had an attendant that explained the social distancing rules and there was food and beverage service available which was a treat. Breakfast was relaxing and the servers went out of their way to give up a good experience and breakfast on the terrace was lovely. All the staff wore masks and most guests had them on also. All in all, we had a nice and relaxing visit even with the new corona virus policies in place.

This hotel was a very nice place to stay while visiting Roanoke with the family for a weekend. The building and decor are beautiful and had a classic and historic feel, but not outdated. The room was clean and comfortable. You do hear all the city and train noise at night though so it can be tough to sleep. It would be nice if the walls were thicker and better insulated because you can hear everything outside, in the hallway, and from the room next door. It would be nice if the room had a mini-fridge too. Other than thin walls and no fridge the room was clean, spacious, nicely decorated, and comfortable.

The breakfast in the morning was very nice with a large buffet of hot and cold breakfast items and made-to-order omelettes. The dining room is beautiful and service is very good. You're breakfast is free or discounted if you're a Hilton Gold member or above.

The location of this hotel is very convenient with a sky bridge to let you easily walk to restaurants and shops downtown. It was also nice to select our room and check in on the app since I got to pick a room that faced the Roanoke star for a nice view. We would definitely stay at this hotel again when visiting the area.

For several years we’d wanted to stay at the historic and beautiful Hotel Roanoke. My husband and I were excited but a little disappointed when we arrived and pulled up to the front of the hotel. We had a young valet parking attendant walk up to our car but as I was getting out to check-in, he said nothing helpful to me nor was he friendly. I had to ask him about where I should go to check-in. I guess he was only trained with how to handle valet parking and since we weren’t doing that option, he was upset with us? I don’t know. Once I checked-in, I asked about using a cart to help get our bags up to the room and the young hotel employee told me I could use one IF I brought it back down (but of course!). I agreed but again, there was no friendliness and this was my first encounter and first impression of the hotel staff.
Our room was adequate but since the hotel restaurant was full and we couldn’t get a hotel reservation, my husband and I opted to eat in our room. That was a bit of a challenge since there was only one chair available and a desk. I guess we should’ve checked for the size of the room when making the reservation. It was VERY small and no space for dining. There were no reservations available at the hotel restaurant for our second evening either, so we ate at a restaurant nearby. There are also no microwaves in any of the rooms, so heating up any leftovers from any dining experiences is not possible. There was a fridge in our room, but it was quite small and not very deep. We’ve stayed at smaller chain hotels with better mini refrigerators with drink holders.
At the time of our stay here, there was some construction and remodeling going on, but it didn’t really interfere too much. Some of the lounges and bars were closed though.
Housekeeping was limited, which is standard for most hotels during the pandemic & wasn’t really an issue. We requested extra coffee packets one evening from the front desk and they said they’d send them to our room. We were forgotten and had to make a second request about 35 minutes later and finally they arrived in another 15 minutes.
I think our biggest disappointment in our whole experience was the stupid parking fee. There is no extra security provided despite the fee you pay. There’s a little security guard hut but no person stays in the hut and the gate was up the entire time so there’s no extra measure of security. I asked about the fee and was told the city owns the parking lot, not the hotel.

Perhaps if we’d been able to dine in the famous hotel restaurant, our overall first impression for the hotel might have been different. We’d heard the food and atmosphere are both fantastic. Maybe we’ll be back for that on a different visit to Roanoke. As for the hotel stay, there was nothing that made the stay feel special, nothing that made us say “WOW!” and we’ve stayed at other Hilton properties and historic hotels that did. We won’t stay overnight here again. Save your money and stay somewhere else! Just come here for dinner— and hopefully staff and employees at the restaurant will be helpful and friendly!!! Sadly disappointed and not impressed.

I don't know if the hotel is short staffed, or it was bad timing, but having only 1 person at the check-in counter can make it rather inconvenient to those in a hurry to get to a business meeting when that 1 person is handling phone calls. The general parking is a good hike away up or down a hill with steps (depending on which way your going). Good luck waiting for an offer from the valet for a golf cart ride unless you are a senior female. The room is average, with opportunities for cleaner sheets, newer mattress, removing other guests hair in the bathroom and a properly working TV. In the hype of social distancing, the hostess asked us to fill the front tables and so they can minimize dirtying empty tables in the room. I've had some great stays at Hilton's! However, this particular operation has some opportunities despite the nostaldia of its history - its still a hotel.

Booked a room with a queen bed & walk in shower. Upon arrival our room had 2 beds, & the bath had a walk in shower. Requested another room with a queen bed & walk in shower. Relocated all belongings to another room 6 floors up - however even though we were told this second room was what we requested, this room had 1 full bed & no walk in shower. So returned to original room. The shower curtain wasn't long enough & each night the water leaked out onto the floor. Had to use needed bath towels to sop up the standing water on the bathroom floor, which was a safety hazard. The baseboard in the bathroom was chipped as well as the trash can. There was dust hanging off the room door & on the doorknob. Something was dropped under the desk & never picked up by the cleaning person. Although this was considered a handicapped room, the size of the room made moving around difficult. The bathroom sink had very limited counter space & the towel rack was located across the room. Had the breakfast buffet & was told by a staff member they used powdered eggs on the buffet. Over all experience was not pleasant.

This property dates back to the late 1800's, although there has been much space added over the years.

It's claim to fame lately is the abundance of conference space.

The rooms do tend to be on the small side, and the suite I was given was quite small. Bathrooms are tiny. Furniture and furnishings are a little dated.

Breakfast in the dining room was very good, complete with omelet chef who actually listens.

Grounds are attractive, and service level was adequate.

Historic hotels can be charming, but you lose out with certain amenities.

If you have to be in Roanoke, then this hotel is a good offering, given other limited possibilities.

If it was in a different City, I would pass it up.

Safe travels !

We love the Hotel Roanoke and make a point of staying there whenever we're in Southwest Virginia. It's a luxury hotel at a surprisingly affordable price. (My coworkers booked their rooms at a Holiday Inn Express 16 minutes away for $10 MORE a night!) The beds are the most comfortable I've slept in anywhere. The staff is friendly and the rooms are always clean. Most of all, the hotel is downright gorgeous. My only complaint this time was the workout room. It used to be fantastic. This time it was just so so. The tvs have been moved so you're stuck looking at a blank wall. That would be fine if the screens on the treadmills worked, but all were without tv/internet access. All in all, it's a very minor ding on another enjoyable stay.

Location was perfect. Hotel is connected to downtown Roanoke by an enclosed aerial walkway. However, it sits on its own plot of beautifully landscaped land which makes it much quieter than downtown and we were glad we choose to stay here instead of in the middle of downtown.

Self-parking isn't free, but it is plentiful and gated (there were four reserved spots for Hilton Diamond members close to the entrance). The hospitality started in the parking lot; a little electric golf cart followed us in to the lot and offered to drive us with our luggage up to the front entrance which would otherwise have been a bit of a trek to walk uphill with luggage.

The lobby is grand and has two restaurants and a bar attached to it. At check-in, as a Hilton Gold I was upgraded from a 2 queen standard to an executive level 2 queen room which ended up being a spacious corner room. As others have mentioned, it is a bit odd that the executive level rooms are on the first floor. (The pool was right outside our windows on one side.) The room was beautifully appointed and even had a small table with two chairs in addition to a chair for the desk. The shower / tub temperature and pressure were good, although the tub was a bit slow to drain (it could keep up with the shower but only if the tub hadn't accumulated any water from the tub faucet yet). The TV had a hotel channel playing a documentary on the history of the hotel which I enjoyed watching, too. The executive room came with a $10pp F&B voucher in addition to the $15pp credit for being a Gold member, which I think was because the executive lounge no longer offers food at least in the evening, although sodas and supposedly coffee were still available. (I saw a bunch of people go in the lounge in the morning but I don't think breakfast is available anymore either.)

The service in the Regency Room was top notch and five star for dinner. It was appropriately more laidback for breakfast but still excellent. We ordered off the menu for breakfast; most items are priced around $15 (basic drinks included in the price). Portions were generously sized, and while some items overlapped with the buffet, others (mains or sides) were only available from the menu. The buffet appeared to offer a dangerously large selection of excellent hot and cold choices for those who prefer it.

Great historic hotel. Passing through on our way home from vacation we decided to stop in Roanoke and grab a room.
Upon check in we were told there was only a room with two double beds available so we decided to take it. My wife and I and 2 young kids quickly realized how small double beds are. Once settled in we received a text asking how everything was and I replied that the size of the beds was a bit crammed and was told to go back to the front desk to see what else was available. At that point my kids were asleep and I wasn’t going to pack up and move to another room as I assumed the receptionist was accurate in telling me this was the only room available. Room was clean but was an accessible room so the shower ran out (no threshold in shower) in to the bathroom and your feet will get wet if you walk in after the shower was used.
Lounge area was nice and lively when we went down for a night cap. Really neat area with a pool table and live music.
Breakfast was included because of our Hilton Honors status and was delicious. Skip was a great waiter. Very attentive and friendly. Thanks Skip!
Would love to come back if we get the chance and are in the area. Would be interesting to roam around and check out this gem of a hotel.
