I recently stayed with my partner at the Copthorne Hotel Paihia and had an overall enjoyable experience. The hotel rooms could do with a refurb but the location is stunning, with beautiful views and easy access to the surrounding area. While I encountered a few housekeeping issues during my stay, I was impressed by the prompt and professional response from the manager after I raised my concerns. They apologised sincerely and went above and beyond to ensure I felt valued, even issuing a partial refund as a gesture of goodwill.

It’s clear the hotel takes guest feedback seriously, and I would happily stay here again. The excellent service from the staff, combined with the relaxing atmosphere, made it a memorable trip.

The bed was so comfy, I travel for work and this was by far the comfiest sleep. The pool facilities are wonderful and cater to all and the buffet breakfast was delicious, loved the option of poached and/or scrambled eggs.

Unfortunately, we had dinner at the inhouse restaurant, my partner ordered the pork belly entree and salmon main and they were both very dry, the salmon in particular was dry and flaky.

We decided we would have desert in the room and asked the restaurant staff if this was an option, they seemed uncertain but told us it was and available up until 9:30pm. We phoned room service at 8:50pm and was told it was not an option as the restaurant was closed, we were also told that at that time of night, only Pizza was available.

In checking out, we were advised that there is actually an after hours menu, and the bar has ice creams on a cone that we could have ordered.

Would appreciate some upskilling with staff around the facilities and services of the hotel, as well as the menu, map and all other relevant information to be available in the hotel rooms.

Thank you for sharing your detailed feedback. We are delighted to hear that you had a comfortable sleep on our bed, and it's wonderful to know that our pool facilities and buffet breakfast met your expectations. We appreciate your specific mention of the delicious options, including the choice of poached and/or scrambled eggs. However, we sincerely apologize for the disappointment during your dinner at our in-house restaurant. Your feedback about the dryness of the pork belly and salmon is valuable, and we assure you that we will address this with our kitchen team to improve our offerings. We also apologize for the miscommunication regarding the availability of dessert in your room. We appreciate your suggestion for upskilling our staff about hotel facilities, services, and menu details. We will take this into consideration for better service in the future. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back for an improved experience. Best regards,

We had a wonderful stay here, just one night unfortunately, a special for 4 people came up with a sea view room , breakfast included.
I booked the add on of an early check in at 12. One thing to note, this add on does seem to be something the company creates but the reception staff don't know about it. Best to phone ahead or get something in writing so the staff at the hotel know you are coming earlier than 2pm.
Other than that, in the end our room was ready shortly after 12, and we had a wonderful stay close to the pool and restaurant. Breakfast was great, weather spectacular and views beautiful. Everyone was helpful. Didn't need to go to Paihia.
But if you do, drive!
Tennis racket and balls avail at reception for a hit. Then cool off in the pool right up till late.
Room service dinner for an easy night with young kids, and the air con was new and not loud and cranky all night like some of the old ones at hotels!
Thanks for our break before school starts!

We appreciate your feedback on the early check-in add-on, and we will work on improving communication with our reception staff. We're thrilled you found the breakfast enjoyable and that our team was helpful throughout your stay. Your mention of the tennis amenities and room service dinner for a relaxed evening with young kids is appreciated. The views from the rooms are excellent but that is where the positives end. Our room was very dated and the shower was terrible. To have it hot enough to shower in the pressure was just a dribble. Maintenance came by twice to fix it and it made no difference. The shutters in our room were also broken so you couldn’t block out light when sleeping. Reception never picked up the phone when called. The spa pool was luke warm and the main swimming pool wasn’t open. You absolutely can’t fault the views and location but they have a lot to work on to bring the hotel up to standard - especially when you are paying a premium rate!

We appreciate your honest feedback regarding your recent stay at our hotel. While we are delighted to hear that you enjoyed excellent views from the rooms and appreciated the prime location, we sincerely apologize for the shortcomings you experienced during your visit. It is disappointing to learn that your room was dated and that the shower's pressure was insufficient, despite maintenance attempts. We apologize for the inconvenience caused by the broken shutters and the unresponsiveness of the reception when you tried to contact them. We regret that the spa pool was not up to the desired temperature, and we apologize for the main swimming pool being unavailable during your stay. Your comments about these issues are taken seriously, and we assure you that we will work diligently to address them and bring the hotel up to the standard expected, especially considering the premium rate. Thank you for bringing these matters to our attention, and we hope to have the chance to welcome you back in the future with significant improvements. Best regards,

Where do I start...disappointing to pay $420 / room for tired decor, ventilation not working, water pressure a joke, musky smelling rooms, cobwebs in most corners, soiled sheets which were immediately changed by the night manager, and no lift for our disabled child's wheelchair which I had been very clear about upon booking. The buffet was terrible the only options for our kids were meats smothered in sauces, deep-fried and desserts. The pool was beautiful but had branches and leaves floating around in it, our portable speaker wasn't handed in by housekeeping which we left behind when we were moved to ground floor rooms. Although the staff were lovely there seemed to be a lack of training, trust and common sense...having hotel policies thrown at us for bringing in our own food to feed our child was appalling. There was a lack of culture and apart from the Māori design on the uniforms not one person said Kia ora! Lots of work to be done here Millennium, I certainly will not be recommending Copthorne Hotel and Resort Bay of Islands to anyone I care about. You also need to review room rates, add photos and room descriptions that are current as we thought we were going to a beautiful resort and paid for Superior Harbourview Rooms which was not the case upon entering our rooms.

The hotel needs a major make over to honour the location and significant attractions adjacent to it. The new galleries and experience at the Waitangi are magnificent and great values with recent investment.

Qualmark need to review the 4 star enviro gold rating they provide it. NZ and international visitors to this special place deserve accurate ratings.

Disappointing experience. Room had a strong cheap perfume smell, old bathroom , no furniture in the room except one desk chair, bar and pool(which was an unclean looking green) closed before 10pm(advertised they were open). No transportation to town “used to have a shuttle” told us to call a cab for a ride back (2km walk) and the restaurant called the only cab in town at 9pm and he said he was done driving for the day. It’s very dark walking back to the hotel at night. At 8:30am when we left the room there was a note on the door saying because of our privacy sign, our room would not be cleaned. $25 per hour if you ask for extra time to check out in the morning. Stay somewhere else. We tried to talk to the concierge and he never acknowledged us so we booked all our tours in town.

Our travel agent had booked us into a dreadful hotel so we had no choice but to find alternative accommodation. Dimitri came to our rescue. This very helpful, enthusiastic and delightful French man was incredibly hospitable, helpful and honest. This man needs a promotion and is the best thing about the hotel. The room was ok, clean and comfortable. The breakfast ok too with plenty of choice. We have come to the conclusion there is an almighty gap between 4 and 5 star. Several areas of the hotel require just a little attention such as the windows looking out to sea, Hibiscus Wing on level 700. The most incredible view and the window is fully of cobwebs abd filthy dirty. A tray and plate etc left outside a room for over 24 hours! Housekeeping would have walked past it! Apart from Dimitri the staff appear a little lazy and some, unfriendly. This hotel needs a firm manager to shake it up.

There were a few benefits to the Copthorne Hotel. The hotel is in walking distance to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds so that was nice. The view from our second floor room was towards Bay of Islands water area. The beds were comfortable and bedding appeared to be clean and fresh smelling. We had an air conditioner which was a nice option since it was February and a bit warm.

The location is not close to Pahia town where the restaurants and ferry trips are located. You can walk over a bridge but it is 45 minutes each way. There is a shuttle but you do need to request and reserve the time. The room is outdated which isn't normally too bad but the carpet was very thin and looked dirty but it wasn't. There were bugs in the light fixtures which was unpleasant. Easy fix by maintenance but no one focused on that. The bathroom also gets humid since there aren't any fans to remove moisture but it seemed like many New Zealand hotels didn't have fans. Might be a way to conserve energy. The towels were small and thin but the shower/tub enclosure was clean.

The breakfast buffet was included in our package but the meal wasn't too good. This hotel caters to travel groups yet they don't have enough staff to clean the tables of dirty dishes and set out new silver wear. We had to clear off tables both days before we could eat. On the plus side, you can order fried eggs and get fresh, hot eggs. Also it was helpful that there were large coffee and hot water urns so you could serve yourself. Not many food choices and when the cheese and meat platters were empty, they weren't refilled in 20 minutes and then we had to leave.

The swimming pool area looked very pretty and was resort quality BUT the seagulls have taken over the pool and are floating in the water. There are feathers in the water and I would not risk swimming due to diseases which might be carried by the birds. Our wifi was included in the package and worked well. There is an in-room safe. There was a mini refrigerator which was helpful. So overall I was pleased with the room and location than the few challenges. We went to the cities of Pahia and Russell so didn't use the room much.

Best to ask the hotel direct? So far as we can recall the meals were good with plenty of meat on offer but we didn't stay over the weekend. During the week there can be major bookings with conferences when they put a buffet on but as guests you can still eat from the menu if you want.
