Martinborough is a quirky little village with a majestic square at its heart. The Martinborough Hotel takes pride of place at the entrance to the square. Once a way station for prosperous travellers to and from the South Wairarapa's huge isolated sheep stations, its grand facade has been a focal point for the town from the early days. Martinborough has made a name for itself as a centre of excellence for cuisine and wine. Visitors and locals alike find the romance of Martinborough endearing as well as invigorating. The hotels past, and it's sense of history and place will charm you as soon as you arrive in the lobby - from the battered suitcases of a gentleman traveller in reception, to the sloping floors and historical sketches of Wairarapa personalities adorning the walls. Today The Martinborough Hotel offers character, comfort and old style personal attention.

We stayed here on the way back from the wings over wire wrapper airshow and were not disappointed.

Our room was immaculate and beautifully decorated in floral print curtains. The bed was one of the most comfortable I’ve slept in and the compact bathroom had everything you need in a stylish black and white colour scheme.

Even the array of tea and coffee provided was imaginative and we had little biscuits as a welcome gift.

When we checked in they advised us to book for dinner which was good and we had a very nice meal in the downstairs restaurant.

After dinner we went into the courtyard garden and played a game of petanque which was hilarious

Each room is named after a local historic resident and ours was Pharazyn.

There was a balcony with comfortable chairs where we enjoyed our breakfast coffee before leaving.

Overall the hotel is beautiful but visually it was marred by the staircase up to the bedrooms where the carpet was seriously worn and looks very scruffy compared with all of the rest of the furniture. I am surprised they had not noticed this and replaced it already

We stayed at the hotel on a Sunday night in a room upstairs in the hotel (there was very little noise from the bar/resturant below). The building has been well cared for and tastefully updated. The room was lovely and warm; heated by radiators. The bed and pillows were comfortable, the bedroom had a small kitchenette with everything we needed for an overnight stay. The bathroom was large and modern with a good shower with a rain head rose. So good to find large fluffy towels provided and not just the usual two (good to have an extra one for towel drying long hair). We were pleasantly surprised by the warmth and comfort of the small town hotel. We ate in the hotel resturant, this was very busy but service was fast and the food was excellent.

My wife and I stayed here as a base on our holidays for a couple of nights early in the week. It is a beautiful old hotel with a lot of character and in the heart of the main town square. We stayed in an upstairs room which had a queen bed, good sized bathroom and small tea and coffee making facility and sink in a cupboard. A table setting for two was outside in the deck, but not quite warm enough weather to use when we visited. The bed was comfy, room warm with a radiator heater, good shower and the soaps, body wash and hair products provided were of excellent quality.
Definitely worth the visit and would love to come back in some warmer months.

We stayed a single night recently in the gorgeous "Barton" garden suite. These suites are located to the rear of the hotel in a very peaceful and pretty garden. It was an excellent choice due to the fact that there is direct access from the car park along a pathway to the suites allowing for easy luggage moving (no stairs). The suite was beautifully decorated, super comfortable with a luxurious bed, armchairs and an occasional table. It was a really nice space to relax in and enjoy the sun and garden views. The toiletries were lovely quality and are of the environmentally friendly variety not the single use plastic nightmares. On arrival we were made to feel very welcome and valued - we were early for check in but the manager assured us our room was nearly ready, and then went to check personally, finding that only the vacuuming needed to be done to finish the room ready for us - she then went and spoke to the cleaner who was vacuuming another room to ask her to leave that and do ours so that we may have the room at the soonest opportunity. I was very impressed by both that, and the way she thanked the staff member who was cleaning, for doing this. I also thanked the cleaner when I bumped into her later and got a beaming smile and a "no problem!" Sure signs that a business is doing things right. There is a charming little library nook off from reception with a nice cosy fire and armchairs that just beg to be sat and relaxed in too. Everything was beautifully styled and in great condition. I would return in a heartbeat and book the exact same room! Also had a great meal in the Union Square Bistro (part of the hotel) - see separate review.

We stayed here on our first night on the North Island, after spending 2 weeks on the South. We were really looking forward to staying here, after reading reviews and seeing the photos online.
It is in a great location right on the square, great for visiting the wineries and it is a beautiful old building, you feel like you have gone back in time.
We walked in for check in, but we didn't feel very welcome, and it did not feel very organised, maybe they were just having a bad day.....
We liked the room, the tall ceilings and the fact you could use the balcony (which all rooms in the building have access to, there is no divides)
There were a few issues;
1. Shower: Soaked the floor, and hard to get the temperature right.
2. Balcony door: Swung open in the middle of the night, it was very windy but definitely made me jump!!
3. Wooden floor: We appreciate it is old and an original feature, it is lovely. It is also very squeaky, and we did catch our socks in the gap of floorboards outside the bathroom door a few times, could really hurt if you catch your foot....
4. Fan: It was very hot in the room! There's only a single fan, hanging from the very tall ceiling, it only worked on the highest speed and made the most annoying noise! I did not sleep well at all.
The bar and restaurant downstairs are nice, the food was great and the staff very friendly (unlike the staff at reception). It is pricey but worth it, the steak was amazing!

Check out was just like check in, staff were talking among themselves in the office and then took our key, said they had our card details so will settle the bill (our dinner and drinks) and email our receipt. Still not received our receipt, should have asked them to do it there and then really (my fault) but just wanted to leave. They charge 2% for card payments fyi.

We had an upstairs room opening out onto the balcony at the back of the hotel. The kitchenette was bijou, built into what was presumably once a cupboard. The bathroom was very good and the bedroom itself beautifully furnished. The room was cooled by a ceiling fan which was adequate whilst we were there. The breakfast was very good. We would be delighted to return.

Very cool historical Hotel. Pretty and comfortable but during summer really needs some air con, the rooms were so hot and the ceiling fans are noisy and to be far do not cut the mustard . The rooms where so extremely hot it made sleeping terrible, even with all windows open. Staff were lovely our meals were great and the gins were amazing .
One thing there was either dog or cat poo on the upstairs deck not cleaned up in the 3 nights we stayed.
May be a great idea to have the aircon and heat addressed from reading similar reviews. For the price really need that look at.

Good parking available also.

One last thing what are local prices all about?? We where taken back that locals got better prices and we had to pay more? Hmm

But all n all was a nice stay for Cruise Martinborough Event

Thanks so much for your feedback. Apologies for the cat mess, this is definitely not up to standard and we have discussed this with the team. I'm sorry that the fan was not sufficient for you to be cooled down. We have had this comment before and as such have aircon installation planned this summer for some room types. Lucky you being in town for Cruise Martinborough - what an incredible weekend it was! Pleased to hear you were comfortable and well fed during your stay.

I stayed for one night during a weekend stay to Martinborough.
The room was well appointed and had all the extras you would hope for including lovely bathrobes, and a great little niche for tea and coffee making. The bed was comfortable, linen lovely, bathroom well equipped and outlook to a lovely to a terrace , I was in the old original part of the hotel. The check in and out was friendly.
I also ate in the restaurant which was delicious and had excellent service, but I thought it was very slightly overpriced for what was on offer. Nevertheless their wine menu was outstanding and a nice reflection of Martinborough.
I was travelling with my young daughter. I would not hesitate in staying here again, except for the noise from Cool Change bar over the road that kept us awake. So I would choose a room located out the back modern wing of the hotel next time or perhaps I would come without my daughter and join the Cool Change Party!

We had a great stay at the Martinborough hotel which is full of old world charm and beautiful restored. Stayed in the Martin Suite and loved the decor, soft beds and furnishings, the little wet-bar is a nice touch and a great extra with good selection of tea/coffee and drinks in the fridge. Bathrooms are well appointed and decorated in Victorian style with an iron cast bathtub. We ate at the restaurant/bar and was a great experience also would recommend.

Martinborough is a fantastic place for a wine and food getaway and the Martinborough Hotel is located right at the heart of the village with its shops and cafes on the door step and most vineyards a quick bicycle ride away. We will be back.

My family and I have dined here in the past and found the food to be good.

On Jan 3, 2023 we travelled to Martinborough from Wellington for the sole purpose of dining at the Martinborough Hotel to celebrate my wife's birthday.

Unfortunately, I ordered the venison burger which arrived 1 hour after placing the order, I ate around half of the burger before discovering the burger was raw inside, I presented it to the bar staff who agreed and took the burger away to inform the chef (?)

I was given an insincere apology and asked if I wanted a refund, (no offer was made to replace the meal given I had not finished the meal), I therefore accepted a refund.

Unfortunately what was supposed to be a nice day out celebrating my wife's birthday was spoilt.

I won't ever dine there in the future and won't recommend anyone else eat there.

Kevin

Hi, Are there heaters in the hotel rooms? And ceiling fans?
Answer from MartinboroughHotel

Hi Nerida, The rooms all have radiators but not any fans. High ceilings and good ventilation. We can add more heaters, and have done so in the past when guests were in need but we've been told the heating system is fine.

Hello 318Heatherp ~ We have different rates for different seasons and weekends are generally more expensive. It really varies on the time of year, but easy enough to check on our website which has our rates loaded into it for the next year. Twinning a room has no extra charge. I hope this was helpful. Please do not hesitate to contact us for further information. Have a great day!!

Looking forward to your stay!! The Martinborough Hotel does not supply push bikes, however there are a few businesses that do and you should not have any problem renting two bikes for the day or half day. It is the best way to see Martinborough and taste the wines from this region. Let us know if there is anything else that you need so we can take the worry out of your visit. ~ Karen (Reception)
