We just returned from an amazing seven days at MJDR and just wanted to say, do not listen to those bad reviews. We had a beautiful clean room - not sure if we were just lucky but our room was a big corner room with so much light. We were spoilt with having our sheets changed daily (really did not need them to be as I don’t change my sheets at home daily but never saw our cleaner to tell her not too), clean towels, water and beer daily, and the cutest towel Art on our bed every day. Our room always smelt so fresh. Toilet paper replaced daily and lots of hot water.
We never went hungry and had an abundance of red wine, beer, gin and tonics and delicious Spanish coffees and cappuccinos. We didn’t have bacon once while we were there but had eggs everyday. We did see many with plates full of bacon - we obviously weren’t fast enough lol. One complaint, it saddened me to see how people wasted food !!! We watched daily how people piled their plates and had two, three and even four plates on their table and then walk away leaving plates piled high with wasted food. I can’t understand why not just take one plate and go back should you still be hungry but seeing the servers having to take those full plates back to the kitchen was disgusting. Our first day we watched people line up for half an hour for the pizza restaurant and then race each other to grab a table. We sat back shaking our heads and at 1:45pm we walked straight in to a table. There again, seeing some eat a slice or two and then leaving the rest of the pizza.
The bacon pizza was delicious !! How I miss it ! Every staff member we met throughout our stay, went above and beyond to make sure we were having a wonderful stay.
The resort is well kept and loved walking around seeing all the beautiful displays around the gardens.
Thank you to the management and staff for putting on such a great returning guest dinner. The Lobster was delicious.

We spent 1 week with family from 21 to 28 December 2024, overall we come back disappointed with our stay. We didn’t have high expectations knowing that in Cuba it lacks everything, but we thought that in a Melia we would be well served since we always travel in the Melia. This one is not worthy of a 4-star Melia.
There was a lack of food for the number of tourists present at the complex. You always eat the same thing in a la carte restaurants. The dishes have far too much salt and the chefs lack originality to prepare pork, beef, chicken and fish, we always eat them the same way.
For the buffet we must arrive early as soon as it opens because there is nothing left after 30 minutes.
Facilities are aging, cleaning public toilets and rooms is not well done. The beds are not comfortable, the sheets are not replaced during the stay, it often lacks toilet paper and bottled water, it does not wash the bathroom (toilet and shower).
However, the beach is amazing and the employees are very kind and ensure as much as possible and the means at their disposal to ensure that your stay runs smoothly.

My stay at Melis Jardines del Rey has been wonderful. I’m impressed with the customer service and friendliness of the staff. We have had no issues with water or power which was one of my main concerns. The beach is spectacular. I have had no trouble finding a shade umbrella - there’s always one available. Bring water shoes for some parts of the beach as the sand in some spots has eroded away but a short walk to a different location and it’s soft sand under you feet. I really enjoyed the yoga/ stretching activity in the morning.
The breakfast buffet is excellent. Lunch offers grilled meat and fresh salads - all good. Ala carte restaurants are OK my favourite was the Italian restaurant. You need to get in line just before 9 to make reservations for up to two days in advance as the restaurants book up quickly. Plenty of different venues serving good coffee and I recommend their Spanish coffee. We were even able to enjoy great bloody Mary’s at the beach! That was an unexpected pleasure for me. White wine is OK. The tinto (red wine) I didn’t like at all. Pina coladas, mojitos, and rum punch are great.
The rooms are clean and well serviced. My room is showing its age but I have no complaints. My mattress is surprisingly comfortable. Wifi is available in the rooms and not too slow. Water pressure is as expected in the Caribbean and I have not had any problems with water temperature. Bottled water is delivered to the room every day and the mini fridge is stocked with Cristal beer. Leave a toonie in the fridge!
Bring bug spray. Although not too bad there are nosiums (sp?) that come out at sunset. There’s fun entertainment and activities everyday. The singer at the Lobby bar is truly amazing.
Overall I am having a fantastic time! I have found my new go to Cuban resort.

Unfortunately my stay here for the week was nonstop disappointment.
Our room wasn’t ready for check in until 6:30pm, when we entered our bed sheets had blood and semen stains and the pillows smelled like sweaty hair with mascara residue (clearly not washed). Our room phone was broken, we had to walk to the lobby and follow up 3x to change the sheets, we didn’t get clean sheets until 9:30pm, and our phone was never fixed.
We only had 1 toilet paper replenished in our room throughout the week, and you were lucky if there was ANY toilet paper in any of the other washrooms. It seemed they could only afford to deliver a limited amount of TP and water bottles on certain days. There were 2 days we were given no bottled water, so if you’re still convinced to go here pack your own toilet paper and water.
There was no point walking over to the customer service office multiple times, they would lie in our face and say “it was just delivered” and we would walk back to the room to find nothing, then walked back and they would lie again, in a way to just get ride of our presence and not deal with the situation. In fact, the one day I asked for some TP to use in the lobby washroom, the manager smiled in my face and said “no”. Very very rude staff, only nice staff were the gardeners (unless you pay the staff money they are friendlier).
They did not replace our sheets or towels once throughout the week even when they were visibly dirty. Bed bugs as well, not surprising since clearly they don’t even change new sheets when a new guest arrives, my husband and woke up to multiple bites.
Internet went down frequently and is only available in the lobby. Don’t expect working internet.
BIGGEST ISSUE: It seems this specific resort has some sort of arrangement for the locals, about 50% of the guests were locals and staff would prioritize service for them. With the Cuban food shortage buffets would always run out, the locals would get to cut in line and typically took an entire bread basket or entire platter of meat and once the actual tourists were next the chefs said no more food. One day it took 1 hour to get a hotdog/ French fries at the grill while we watched a family of locals be served 2 replenishments of a PLATTER of hotdogs hand delivered by the manager.
Even without the shortage lineups for food in general was ridiculous, this place used to have a pizza oven along the beach and you now need to wait in a half hour lineup at a restaurant, you can’t take it to go. Lineup for eggs took on average 30-45 minutes. Only one bar is opened after 10pm. They only had beer and rum available when they ran out which was frequent.
Also note to bring your own beach towels, there was only 1 day they had clean beach towels to replace.
Good things:
Lots of friendly stray cats if you like cats Food wasn’t bad if it was available Nice beach for the most part, lots of sharp rocks the first 2 mitres walking into the shore.

Dear customer, We have read your opinions and we were wondering if you have spoken with anyone here at the hotel about what you do not like and the possibility of reversing your dissatisfaction. Unfortunately, we were not able to find you in our system because we do not have your full names. It may be interesting to check what you have reported during your stay. We would like to stress again that we gladly help to find the solution for each issue that our clients may report even when it is clear that we cannot always please everyone. But what it is about is trying to adjust ourselves in a personalized way to the particular expectations of each client. It is important that clients approach our Customer Service Department because otherwise we cannot do much with those dissatisfaction. We are taking very seriously your opinions about the service in general. But we would like to explain once again that the staff do not make distinction with our clients, no matter from where they come from. The friendly and attentive service is our motto and we cannot allow that this change. All in all we do appreciate your feedback and invite you to return in the future. Do not hesitate to contact us in advance, we are at your service. Warmest regards, General Manager

Bad experience, I absolutely don't recommend it. Last Minute sold us a package in this resort calling it 5 stars, in truth when we arrived at the reception it seemed like a real 5 star but the surprises begin when they take you to your room and continue both in the canteen and in the restaurants inside the resort resort. Dilapidated rooms it was useless to report the same problems to the reception every day. The rooms were cleaned in a very, very superficial way and every time I had to ask for towels, one day I also had to hear that they had had problems with the towels and they weren't there, we had to wait until 10pm, in 12 days never changed the sheets, the curtains have changed color from the dirt, upon our arrival the room was full of dead flies so much so that I had the room changed but the other one was the same. They never put soap, there were three of us in the room but they brought 2 small bottles of water. The even more disappointing thing for a 5 star is the food, of a very low standard, in 12 days I have never seen anything new and then the canteen is a mess. I advise us to avoid the small restaurants that are there because it is the exact same food as the canteen only in a very small format, they bring you a miniature sandwich and you can't ask for another, then they bring you 50 grams of rice either with chicken or with fish . They are 4 restaurants with different names but identical food. I could write a novel but I'll stop here, you make your own assessments but it's definitely not a 5 star so to speak it's a good two star pension. P. S. For coffee lovers, be careful because there is a possibility that they will make your coffee with coffee that has already been used before (it happened to me personally.) Good luck

It is essential to bring condiments: ketchup, mayonnaise, jam, peanut butter, maple syrup, etc. None of this is available on site or if so in excessively limited quantities. No soft drinks on site, not even alcoholic beverages. White wine available only occasionally and in tiny quantities. I recommend purchasing wine at Duty Free for those who like wine... You have to have breakfast very early to have access to fresh eggs, because the daily quantity is excessively limited. No orange juice, only juices made with “Tang” style powder. Same thing for lemonade, fruit punch, peach and pineapple juice. Regularly lacks coffee. Only available in the lobby, no coffee at the buffet, even at lunch, none at the snack bar or in the à la carte restaurants. Ice cream early in the day, at the kiosk, because by noon there is no more... Bring snacks in large quantities because when there is a lot of traffic, there is a lack of meat and other products.. Even though we had prepared for restrictions and supply difficulties, we didn't think it would be this bad! Take your showers early in the morning or very late in the evening because otherwise there is no pressure and no hot water. Choice between boiling water or iced water! Bring several washcloths because none on site. Despite tipping, possibly due to the limited quantity, they put back the same damp towels from the day before and they remain damp and odorous. Bringing toilet paper is a necessity!!! Even in the toilets on site, there is rarely paper so you have to carry it with you at all times! Hand soap is rarely available in bathrooms so it is essential to have it with you at all times as well. Essential beach shoes! Insecticide for early morning or late evening. Try the "Crèma de whisky" when it is available as it is extremely rare and tastes better than Bailey's!

Our trip was a complete disaster. Starting with the resort itself, the pictures on your website did not represent the actual state of the resort. It was old and dingy. The food served at the resort was not fit for human consomption, there was not enough drinking water either. As a result my spouce and I both got sick, we are back home and still not well. We practically did not eat or drink for 7 days. We got one bottle of water every 2 days and we ate cabbage every day and a bit of bread when available. No fruits or vegies. The little meat they had, had turn bad, they had some canned vegetables and fruits which tasted passed the expiry date, we had powdered milk, no juice of any kind, the dishes and cutlery were of questionnable cleanliness also the warmers did not work, huge line-ups, to make sure you had something to eat you had to be in line at least 45 minutes in advance. We had to fight to get a bottle of water at one point. Public washrooms with broken toilets and urinals. The sheets and towels were not changed all week. The resort did not provide us with beach towels, so we had to use the towels from our room for both the beach and cleaning ourselves all week. We had problems with our toilet not flushing, we had to call maintenance, we had problems with our door not locking we called maintenance 2 times, our bar fridge did not work, coffee machine did not work and no coffee was provided. We had no internet connection all week. There was a clinic on site, tried going twice but it was always closed during the scheduled work hours. We inquired at the front desk for some help or meds and we were told they could not do anything for us. We were basically stranded in the middle of nowhere. We could not purchase any food items, water or medication. We wanted leave ahead time and we were told not possible. There was no intertainment of any kind. Smoking was permited throughout the resort including the rooms, so no escaping for the non smokers. Do not go to this resort!!!

Melia Jardines Del Rey resort was such a fabulous stay in Cayo Coco! This was my first time in Cuba, and no matter what you hear I will be back!
The drive from the airport was quick, the beach was lovely- a small portion of rocks but nothing you can't get pastor avoid with water shoes, once you are past the shelf the sand is soft and clear as can be. There is a long lovely beach front with smooth sand to walk! Beach bar, 2 poolbars and so many more!
The lunch buffets always had options, the snack bar has great fries, however the Pizza bar was the best spot for lunches by far. The line is always longer right at open, but if you go after 145 it is a much shorter wait.
For dinners we had buffets, where the chefs fry you fresh meats, pasta, fish and rice if you are willing to wait(I always am) as well as a full buffet spread- not my most favourite but many options for different eaters. The Barbeque restaurant was DELICIOUS- some of the best chicken and mashed potatoes I've had which was shocking! The Italian was also okay, good options, the staff sang happy birthday at both spots! We only stayed 4 nights so we were not able to try the other available a la cate options. To make reservations a resort staff sets up under the gazebo to the right side of the lobby bar from 9 am - 11 am.
Breakfast always had many options as well, if you like specific things just bring your own syrup and peanut butter//jams. The lobby bar staff makes excellent coffee, iced coffee, and Spanish coffees, as well as there is a specific coffee bar.
Now the real highlight of this resort- The STAFF! The bartenders and entertainment here are absolutely amazing. The bond you build in such a short time is insane, they always take great care of you and make sure your day and night are filled with fun! Every day they start on the beach with dance classes , stretching and other similar activities. the real fun starts in the afternoons at the party pool- then proceeds at the mojitos bar nightly.
The rooms were clean, comfortable, had working AC. Very light blankets, and not much light in the bathrooms, however nothing that would hinder your stay.
Overall this resort was incredibly safe, personable, and full of all the things you need to reset and recharge and have a great time. The people working and travelling here are so wonderful and you really have a recipe for a good vacation if you are willing to be patient and have the proper standards.
As someone who routinely vacations to Mexico, Jamaica, and DR I would return to this resort! Is this the most luxurious vacation I've ever had-no. However it has everything to have an amazing time surrounded by kind energetic people!

It was undoubtedly the worst hotel where I have been in terms of food and hygiene. Eating that is not restless when it is finished, leftovers of lunch to eat at dinner and vice versa, to eat a pancakes 20/30m of wait as well as to have a drink at meals, sometimes because there is no glue, or because there is no ice, etc. Grilled meat or fish more 30m waiting with the huge queues. They beat us by fatigue and we give up) When I speak in meat (a few pieces of pork or chicken this last cut into fine slices immersed in the boards in the water of freezing (horrible appearance). Yogurt with validity 11/23 put for consumption on 06/24 !! Hygiene 0. To get to the restaurant and have glasses on the table not with one or two flies, but 10/12 !! is to lose immediately the little desire to eat. Ceiling lamps with the broken bottom and full of dead animals that just fortunately do not fall on our plate!! Lack of resources in Cuba as they want us to believe ?? No !!! Lack of hygiene that yes. I can say that I spent a week feeding only bread, cheese, steak and some fruit, just like so many other people who were with me. To mention that I left the hotel on an excursion and had lunch out with a lot of quality, so this is not a "Cuba problem" but the hotel. I still suggested to a hotel manager to at least put the glasses down when they put the tables, to which he replied "this is a good suggestion and I will report to the chief of the room". I stayed 4 more days at the hotel and everything remained the same. Regarding the rooms I have nothing to say, spacious, clean daily, 1.5l water and can beers answers every day. Be very careful with mosquitoes, bites that look like measles and that after many days remain in the body. The beach is very good, translucent water and very warm, but, full of stones and corals at the entrance, I recommend bringing water shoes. Finally, negative note also for Newblue, which sells the trips, without taking measures so that other customers are not fooled.

First I would like to say thank you to management for giving me the rooms I requested. When we arrived the gentleman took our passports and proceeded to check us in, than he walked off to talk to some guys and left us standing there for 5minutes, came back said wait over there for a ride to our rooms waited a good 30 minutes. The breakfast in the morning was okay if you like flies all over your table and yourself, the staff are not very friendly and you have to stop them to get a coffee. The restrooms are far apart and not all are open hit and miss for toilet paper and hand soap. NO POP one beer and one water per day in room. The whole week never saw any staff trying to get you involved in anything. We had a rain storm no umbrellas in rooms first floor flooded my son slipped on the stairs on his butt and my husband fell also. The coffee bar ran out of coffee the snack bar is another storey went to get French fries very slow service came after we sat for 15min said they ran out 3 times the same story what a joke. We all have bites all over don’t know from what if you like flies this resort is for you. Ps the best food was at the international restaurant. This has nothing to do with the resort but you would think the Cayo Coco airport with all the money coming in from Canada they could have descent restrooms for the women. I will save my money and pay a little more and go to Mexico where the food is very good and there staff treat you with respect.

Dear 707terryg, We would like to start our comments by saying that we respect the opinions of our customers, even if at some point we may not agree with them. So we are not going to take your review in a negative way, we are going to use it to improve our services because our dearest guests are the reason of our existence. You have to know that we depend on some external suppliers and in some cases we are not able to offer the variety that we would like. But we always try to find the best solution to meet the expectations of our customers. And we consider that we are doing the best for everyone. Regarding the service in the Snack Bar 24-7, we will review your opinion with the staff in charge. You mentioned in your opinion that the staff was not friendly with you. However, we would like to say that the Cuban staff is very nice and we have received nothing but great compliments on their services. Unfortunately, we do not have your actual details to verify your reports to our customer service department. If your stay at our resort was as bad as you said, we hope you reported it to our customer service system to give us the opportunity to correct your dissatisfaction. If you decide to return, please do not hesitate to contact us in advance. It will be a pleasure to take care of your second time with us. Best regards General Manager
