The apartments are really showing their age now despite having had minor refurbishments over the years. We originally went there on honeymoon way back in August ’92 and found them in serious need of D.I.Y. even then. The better apartments are upstairs - all have a side sea view apart from the front four, which overlook the pool and have stunning uninterrupted views over Lobos Island and Lanzarote in the distance. Small holiday rental villas to your left and a large private residence on the right more or less guarantee some degree of peace and quiet.
All apartments are one-bedroomed with two single beds pushed together, linen is supplied and there is a fold-down double bed in the living area that will just about accommodate two anorexic adults or a couple of obese kids in any degree of comfort. Towels are supplied but shouldn’t be used for the beach, and are changed maybe two or three times a week. All apartments are given a quick sweep and dust every morning. Remember to take mosquito repellent as not all of the bedroom windows have mosquito netting and you will certainly not be sleeping in the summer months with the windows closed. Extra pillows and blankets can be found in the wardrobe along with a small supply of coat hangers and a wall-mounted safe which, I suspect, isn’t very safe at all. Other guests we’ve spoken to have had their apartments visited by opportunist thieves and have lost cameras and phones. Remember to shut all windows and doors when leaving and never leave cash or passports in the apartment…if necessary rent a short-term deposit box at one of the local banks.
Don’t expect luxury….these apartments are basic, economy accommodation and fall far short of European hotel standards. There is no pretence that they are anything other than a roof over your head and the bare necessities to provide you with sleeping, eating and washing facilities. That said, we have stayed there five times in August ’92, July ’98 ,August ’01, August ’02 and September ‘11 and have thoroughly enjoyed ourselves regardless of all the obvious shortcomings. It is rare to find any other Brits there, as very few travel companies appear to offer Las Gaviotas as part of a package. Expect to bump into Germans and Spaniards around the (rather grimy) pool area but be careful not to faint with shock when you find that even on the busiest weeks it is possible to find a sunlounger without a Teutonic towel draped across it. This is in most part due to the proximity of some of Europe’s best beaches.
Check for Italian school holiday dates before you book and avoid these dates like the plague. The children are loathsome and always out of control....
Unusually for Spanish style accommodation, all the plumbing is in good repair…plenty of hot water from the solar-heated roof tanks and working shower, bidet, toilet and washbasin means that there can be no excuse for a lack of personal hygiene. It’s not a good idea to drink the water…. the apartments are built next to a series of enormous underground septic tanks which overflow with monotonous regularity throughout the busy season, drowning the road outside in a shallow lake of stinking effluent – once smelled, never forgotten – that could possibly contaminate the water supplies. With inexpensive and plentiful bottled water available everywhere it would be daft to run the risk. Toilet rolls are supplied by the management.
Kitchen areas vary between apartments but have more or less the same level of equipment. Expect to find a built-in electric oven and two-ring hob; fridge, sink, kettle, toaster and basic cutlery, (bring your own corkscrew – the one supplied is invariably rusty, as is the tin-opener, which looks as though it has been used for weeding the cacti). There is a small amount of crockery as well as enough cups and glasses to go around.
Beware of the ubiquitous plague of white ants in the kitchen areas – although harmless and non-aggressive they can get in everywhere and all food needs to be stored either in the fridge or in firmly sealed food bags.
The living areas are pretty spartan…..tiled floors throughout are pleasantly cool but need regular sweeping to remove the vast amounts of sand that gets dragged into the apartments. Luckily there is a broom, dustpan, brush, mop and bucket provided to keep the floors reasonably clean. As well as a table and four chairs you will find the sofa bed and a small T.V., although you would have to be pretty desperate to watch the drivel on offer. Out on the balcony / patio you will have another table and chairs with a clothesline and pegs for the usual pile of damp towels.
Local facilities are pretty much up to scratch….there is a small bureau de change and car hire office outside the complex….I couldn’t begin to guess at the opening times as I’ve only seen it open once in all the times I’ve been there. There are at least three other car hire offices within a fifty metre radius, but don’t think that the area is busy as it is extremely peaceful and laid back at all hours. A small pavement café forms half of the frontage….the food is simple and pretty basic, but bear in mind that if the aforementioned septic tanks have overflowed you will have to cope with an overwhelming graveyard stench whilst eating. A small supermarket lurks directly opposite, (mind the lethal steps leading down to it). Next door to the supermarket is a somewhat sinister restaurant, which never seems to have any customers. We took pity on them one evening and ended up having a surprisingly good meal, spoiled only by the grim sight of the chef coming out of the kitchens to watch football on the television, dressed in possibly the filthiest apron I have ever seen.
Taxis in Correlejo are cheap and plentiful, but are almost impossible to find outside Las Gaviotas. You have to bear in mind that the apartments are located on the outskirts of the town on Avenidas grande playas, a long street that is one-way, so most cabs coming past will already have fares aboard. Car hire is also cheap and easy, depending on the level of comfort you are looking for. Bear in mind that, in the busy seasons, jeeps and 4X4’s are like gold dust, so it would make sense to pre-book.
It can feel like a hell of a long walk into town, especially when the sun is up. Expect to take 20 – 25 minutes for a leisurely stroll, or 15 – 20 minutes along the beach. Expect it to take much longer coming home after dark, especially if using the beach route….there is little or no lighting, a multitude of trip hazards and a veritable cloud of bloodthirsty mosquitoes dogging your footsteps as you stagger back through the sand and rubble.
One more thing that needs to be mentioned is security. The nights can get particularly sticky in the summer and you will be tempted to leave the balcony / patio windows open in a vain attempt to get a through draught……not much of a problem in the upstairs apartments, but begging for it in the downstairs rooms. Always lock up when you go out….even if you aren’t going far as it is all too easy for someone to be in and out and away on their toes with your valuables.
So there we have it…..don’t expect too much and you will enjoy using these apartments as a base. Fly out expecting English standards of cleanliness, hygiene and maintenance and you will feel a bit hard done by. Don’t forget that all my information is based on summer visits. Enjoy.
The apartments are big, you have loads of space & either a terrace or a balcony. We got clean towels & the apartment cleaned every day we were there. The pool area was always chilled out & quiet with loads of loungers or else cushioned benches at seaside tables to chill out at. 2 bars, one at the front & one at the pool with cheap beer and frosty glasses straight from the freezer (but, unfortunately, the barman [sorry!! you were lovely but it's true!] has *dreadful* taste in music. Pink & Nickelback make regular appearances, bring earphones!!) There are no kids clubs or 'entertainment', thank God, so if you're not into that sort of thing at all this is perfect for you!
It's about 20 minutes walk either along a quiet residential road or the seafront to the 'strip' area & there's a Hiperdino literally across the road. If you aren't a lazy sod there's a surfschool next door. All of the staff are helpful & speak English, not sure about the previous review saying that they were mainly German speaking, I actually think that's a different hotel)
My absolute favourite part of this place was the view from the pool, you're looking right onto the ocean & Las Lobos. If there's a nicer place on the island to sit & sip a lunchtime beer or read into the evening I didn't come across it, so pretty.
One thing to be aware of, when we were there there was a little building work going on & judging by the amount of men with measuring tapes and clipboards wandering around there's a lot planned for the near future, if I were going in September or October I'd probably drop them an email first to make sure the place won't be rocking with building noise. The little bit we had when we were here was irritating, I wouldn't fancy being round if they're knocking in the wall at the pool & the stone benches (as I overheard them talking about!)
The bath which was the shower base, has been re painted and the paint was peeling off,oh and by the way was big enough to wash a dog in,,,the beds are so bad we both arrived home with back aches. But thats not the worst,,,,the worst is the noise from the on site bar which is very close to all the appartments,,er all 15 of them,,seven are downstairs, and have a view of a wall, the pool is tiny and SALT water,,,lol,,,a sea front resort with a salt water pool!!!,,,,you have been warned!!....
A pool for each area of apartments so only about 30 rooms to share a pool, which is good and your own sun lounges on your own terrace so never have to try and fight for a sun bed which is a positive. The pools didn’t look exceptionally clean though as you could see green around the top of them and they looked rather dirty.
A big thank you to Nicola, you made amazing omelettes and to the two ladies who work in the restaurant, your service was great.
