6 weeks on I am still waiting a reply from Thomas Cook about my complaints! Booked 1 week 1/2 board, breakfast OK but same every day. As per other's comments rock hard beds, mini bar not restocked. Very strange evening meals - menu presented each night had 2 choice of started and 2 choice of main course, no choice of sweet! Starter S were deep fried something on a bed of lettuce, main courses mostly casseroles with no other fresh vegetables or potatoes. I asked for potatoes one evening and go told my casserole with 2 tiny slices of fried bread was all I was going to get. Alternate nights the sweet was Fruit of the Season - alias one very under ripe orange or one very under ripe nectarine and a plum! Could have played cricket with the Orange and the I sult was a spoon and fork to eat it with!! Most of the food seemed to be 'out of a tin! After 8pm The waiter doubled up as the barman, receptionist and night porter. The swimming pool is a beautiful area but the water is SO COLD in fact freezing but I did brave it 4 days out of 7! There was NO information about anything in the room - had to ask the receptionist about everything. Very strange set up! El Encinar had obviously once been a beautiful old hotel - it could be SO much better! Booked through Co-Op Travel - turned out to be a very expensive Thomas Cook Flexi break, completely cheated and disappointed!

Reserved a room for 2 nights ,parking entrance narrow and difficult, gates locked so had to walk on busy main road with bags into oncoming traffic Receptionist made us feel like an inconvenience, very frosty..told where room was 4 floors up,place felt like a cheap hostel...the room was sparse, unwelcoming, rock hard beds No information or tea making facilities, faded bed covers and curtains 1970s pics on wall. .the view however was magnificent..I was not p Going to pay £85 a night just for a view. .Therefore. .we checked straight out, reception didn't really offer any help and couldn't care less, maybe they are used to it..what a shame it could be a lovely place to stay with a bit of care and enthusiasm..they need a visit from alex politzzi. ..

Quiet, some would say too quiet, hotel with a minimum of frills. Wonderful location, nice pool area, charming park-like surroundings with amazing views. Breakfast is nice, rely on self service or Valldemossa for the remaing meals. Our second year in succession.

The only good thing about the Hotel is the view!!! Its understaffed, I counted 3 staff over my 4 day stay. No lift to carry bags up 4 stories. You have to walk along a dangerous main road from the hotel car park to get to the entrance. Theres another safe way but the gate is always locked. There is 1 Ironing board and Iron for the whole hotel! No room service, dinner needs to be booked a day in advance and the rest only stays open till 8.30 Rooms are old and dank

You go to El Encinar for one thing really-the views. The views of Mallorca's stunning West Coast have to be seen in the flesh and EL Encinar provides plenty of them. Ive stayed in both the apartments and the Hotel rooms and both are comfy if now really out-dated decor wise. You'll need a car for trips into nearby Deja or Valldemossa and the sense of isolation was a plus to me. IF and when the decor & facilities are updated it would become one of Mallorca's gems.

The location is spectacular. Its isolation, seen by some as an issue, might for others be a desirable feature. Some, too, may be put off by the need to drive winding roads but that can be overcome: drive carefully and don't be put off by tailgaters. But what is inexcusable is the condition of the apartments. These, in the early weeks of May during our visit had an unpleasant odor of decay, of a lack of attention, of, frankly, carelessness. That the cost (to some) was not particularly expensive is no excuse for second-rate performance. El Encinar may not have been the worst hotel that I have stayed in over fifty years of traveling, as a recent reviewer suggests, but I will most certainly not be returning.

Other reviewers have waxed lyrical about this hotel so I am going to be quite objective and produce a list. We arrived mid afternoon with two suitcases and hand baggage to be allocated a room on the fourth floor. When we asked we were told there was no lift and no assistance could be given as the receptionist was the only member of staff in the hotel. There were seventy steps to the fourth floor and then about thirty metres to room 110. The room was shabby. There was a lot of pine panelling which had water stains on it and a badly maintained look. The bathroom was dirty with a lot of black mould around the sealant between bath and wall. A sign on the wall advised not to drink the water as, we were told by the receptionist, it was not suitable for human consumption. She then sold us a bottle of water. Every enquiry usually involved another trek up and down 140 steps, as there was no information in the room and the telephone didn't work very well. We couldn't reserve dinner as they were fully booked.mwhen we looked in on the dining room later there were only three tables taken. When we saw the quality of the cooked breakfast we were pleased not to have tried the dinner menu. The views from the balcony of the room were very fine, even spectacular. The balcony itself had rusting bars and concrete smeared on the tiled floor. The divisions between each rooms balcony were minimal so you shared next doors conversation and cigarette smoke. The swimming pool is to be found, eventually, in the most amazing setting. The paths to get to the swimming pool were not the easiest to negotiate, especially if you were unsteady on your feet. Parking was reached by walking alongside a narrow and busy road rather than through the grounds as gates were locked denying access directly from the hotel. Exiting and entering the car park was made difficult by the very narrow entrance - larger cars had considerable problems. When I asked the receptionist on our departure if she had ever been in room 110 she admitted she had not. This could be a fantastic hotel. It is in fact a terrible hotel and although the apartments seem to be reasonably well received and I cannot comment on them, I strongly recommend against staying in the hotel, if only for the sake of your heart and the seventy steps up and down.

Triggered by the intriguing variation in reviews we booked an apartment at el Encinar for 5 days as a base for walking the nearby mountains. For us it served that purpose quite well. It is a bit remote, you definitely need a car since the nearest supermarket is about 4 km away in Valdemossa, along a narrow and busy road so not a pleasant walk. The nearest restaurant is also 2 km along this road. With a car we easily covered walking in Valdemossa, Deya and Soller and one walk even started across the street from the hotel. The apartments are a bit old fashioned but all have a big balcony overlooking the sea below, so we only slept indoors. We enjoyed the balcony from breakfast till lovely sunsets. There is a nice small seating area on a rock that was even better for sunsets. In september the hotel was not very full, maybe when it is, you may hear your neighbours since the balconies are aligned next to each other. Don't expect luxury, but they are not expensive and good value for money. Be aware that besides apartments you can also book rooms, they don't all have balconies. The groundfloor apartments also lack the view. The hotel has extensive grounds suggesting a more optimistic plan of the past. The pool was not heated and very cold at the end of September. Overall we enjoyed our stay. Walking tips: -Valdemossa cami de Arxiduc: amazing path over the top of the mountains. - Deya to Cala de Deya: beautifull village and nice restaurant in a small cove on the way for lunch (best steamed mussels ever)
