Spent a week at the Rocomar. Thoroughly enjoyed it. The views out over the ocean and across the Desertas Islands are amazing. Friendly, capable staff. Decent quality food. Good amenities. Large gym with full time instructor. The hotel, is the only one as far as i could tell with a large waterfront accessible grounds in Canico. Lots of space to be able to enjoy the sun and relax, with plenty of sunbeds available. While it's not IN Funchal, getting to the capitol is easy, with a regular bus service close by. There's also a couple of car rental (and one does motorcycle rental) on the street nearby. Also, most of the day tour companies will pick you up and drop you off from the hotel. There are some good restaurants nearby when you want a change from the plentiful and well cooked food they offer. This is NOT a Club Med or 18-30 hotel. And there's no nightlife as such, for the younger visitors. Definitely a hotel for those who are NOT looking to party it up. Speaking of age, while the hotel is in decent shape, and well furnished, it's not hard to see it is showing its age in places. But they are clearly renovating, in stages. The indoor/outdoor pool was closed, for instance, but in the process of being worked on. So hopefully by next season it will be open. The seawater pool was definitely being used and enjoyed. I will mention one thing. If you're mobility impaired or don't get on with stairs, this may not be the place for you. Being a cliffside hotel affords great views and access to the ocean, but you have to be able to get down, and up, many flights of stairs to get to get your feet wet.…
stayed in September and had a great week here .Staying as a solo guest I felt very safe and staff were all wonderful .The hotel is lovely and very clean ,never a problem getting a sunbed and the views are wonderful.I found the food good and I am a fussy eater but always found something I enjoyed and dessert cake to die for !.Had a refurbished room and have to say one of the best air conditioning units i have come across and the hairdryer was salon style and very good.I emailed ahead before my visit with room request and these were all fulfilled .So thank you to all at Roca mar and would definately return
I have visited this hotel 3 times this year,i have found the room clean and bedding to be fresh. The staff are all very helpful and arrange transport and excursions with ease, this year they have also arranged for the required covid tests prior to travelling home. This hotel has many stairs and steps but at 80 years old and a single traveller they have not proved that difficult. The pool is cleaned each day I cant wait to return next year
Lovely clean hotel, our bedroom was clean, big and the bathroom was very clean, yes there a lot of steps, but we found a lovely wee spot that we went to every day, the reception staff were amazing and very helpful, we got into a bit of a nightmare with our return Covid test, and they helped to sort this, printed out all our forms for coming back to Scotland, Ivo and Carina who worked in the bar, were good at what they did and made sure our glasses were never empty for long, the dining room was very clean and well ran, I would go back to this hotel.
We were so captivated by the sea at this place and the many ways to enjoy being right on the ocean—the property is built to allow numerous places to sit and lounge and swim. The ocean was warm 75 degrees. We enjoyed the staff at the front desk. They were eager to help, making reservations, giving directions and smiling. On one occasion we missed a turn on the walk and delayed arrival at our destination. It was pretty late but a call to Rocamar Front desk got us a taxi ride back to the hotel in time to make our dinner reservation. The room was comfortable with a nice small kitchen. Nicely cleaned daily with a large veranda overlooking the ocean. The buffet meals were perfect and the outside dining area was probably the most scenic we have ever experienced. We want to thank Lurdes for all her help. I left my eyeglasses in our room and flew away. She was kind enough to arrange to get them back to me in the US We plan to revisit next spring, and climb the high peaks that clear weather eluded us…
