This was our 3rd attempt to visit since first booking for 2020. However, a bonus of the pandemic was, the place has been completely refurbished to a fantastic standard. We are in the RIU Class Club and have stayed at several of the hotels over the years including a number of RIU Palaces and this hotel measures up to their standard. The staff as always are extremely friendly, polite and speak excellent English. Our booking in was handled by recently qualified Filip. He is a credit to the training methods and his mentors, when asked a question he didn't know, he didn't fob us off, but sought assistance, saying "now I've learnt". Well done to all. There is only one al carte restaurant and the booking system is quite strict. The free shuttle bus to Funchal is ideal. Finally, we have already booked again for 2023, So that will give you an idea!

Hotel's Favorite
Fantastic week away in this hotel. Food is excellent- nice range of choice for vegetarians. Good quality alcohol. The staff are absolutely superb- they cannot do enough to help you! Loved the fact that a fresh pot of coffee was brought immediately at breakfast. Rooms are dated but spotless and with everything that you need. Three of us shared the room and it was not cramped. Okay, there aren’t as many sockets as a modern hotel, but such is life. Wi-fi was excellent in all hotel areas/around the pool. Evening entertainment was rather cheesy but fab. I stayed here with my two teenagers aged 14 and 16. We thoroughly enjoyed the relaxed vibe- we played cards and drank in the evening. Yes, there is no animation team and the pool area was quiet- this is a relaxed quality hotel. Free bus to Funchal was really useful- get the cable car up and then toboggan down! Loved the hotel, even the outdated parts. 5* staff and service, loved the island and the climate. (We had breakfast at 8am then headed straight to the pool- plenty of sunbeds at this time)

The hotel is in a stunning location overlooking the sea. Hotel rooms are recently refurbished and really comfortable. Air conditioner was a bit chilly at times but we used bath robes as an extra cover. Food pretty good. Breakfast and lunch very samey but lots of choice. Evenings had lots of choice. We had duck, salmon, lamb etc etc over a week Can’t comment on evening entertainment as we never saw it. Preferred to sit on outside terrace and chill. No shortage of sunbeds. We’d go for a walk in the morning and could still get a bed after 12pm The only downside ……no beach and limited flat walking The beach is made of huge pebbles/rocks which makes getting in and out of the sea difficult. Take rubber shoes althoygh there are steps to get into the sea. The promenade outside the hotel is lovely but not long enough. We walked miles but all uphilll through residential areas. There are a few bars and shops just outside the hotel We got the courtesy bus into Funchal from the hotel which is a must We didn’t do any other trips as the tranquility of the hotel was enough for us We would definitely go to the hotel again but if it was set on a sandy beach

Our second visit to Madeira (1st was 10 years ago). We came this time with our daughter (35) and granddaughter (2). The Riu was chosen because it is all inclusive and advertised as good for young children. The hotel we would thoroughly recommend. It has recently been refurbished to a good standard. Our rooms (with side sea view) were a good size, very clean and with a good shower/bathroom and balcony. Public areas are very spacious and look elegant. The main restaurant can get rather crowded and the buffet style service areas sometimes require sharp elbows! Time your visits and these minor problems can be avoided. The food is very good. Plentiful and lots of choice. You can eat healthy or not as you choose. The pool and terraces are well maintained with plenty of space and no feeling of being overcrowded. Funchal is a 15 minute ride away and the frequent free hotel shuttle bus is free and convenient. The area in which the hotel is situated is a little soulless but you can walk along a seaside promenade and there are a few local shops and cafes if you fancy a change of scenery. Nightly entertainment was much enjoyed by our young granddaughter and is a mixture of local bands playing covers of mostly 80s/90s UK pop and dance troupes. Drinks and snacks are available all day. Alcohol is non-premium but perfectly acceptable. Staff are efficient and unfailingly polite and friendly. Would recommend for a one week break with all your main costs paid upfront.

The hotel was spacious, with generous bedrooms, and clean. The food was good and varied. The drinks were sometimes obviously lower quality but still OK. The staff were all friendly and helpful, dare I say exceptional. There are some aspects that nee to be considered about this hotel. It is in a quiet area with few shops and other facilities. The place is also extremely hilly. I would not suggest taking youngsters to this hotel. They ran out of in-room coffee and so for a few days no coffee in the rooms. Also the indoor pool is closed and there are no storage in the steam room so clothes have to be dropped on to the floor.

Wading through the 5* reviews of this hotel I am really surprised at some of the comments explaining that this hotel is faultless, best experience ever, outstanding etc. It's not awful... but it's not great. I have found myself feeling like I am being too picky but some of the guests that were staying at the same time were highlighting the same issues as us, as are some of the other reviews here too. Rooms: we got put in a ground floor room to start with facing the bin area, not really how I wanted to start my holiday so I called down to reception and asked if they could move us - they said 99% of people ask not to stay in that room so obliged and moved us to floor 1. This room was the same and facing the bins with very little space - I spoke to our TUI rep Ricardo who was very helpful and helped us move rooms to floor 4 which was much better. The hotel claimed the rooms were of the same grade, however they were hugely different in size, with the room on the 4th floor having a larger balcony with enough space for a sofa, whereas the basement room did not. If these rooms are the same grade then the marketing and description needs to be looked at. Once we had moved we were pleased with the room, spacious and light although the wardrobes and door frames haven't been refurbished / painted and look out of place - not sure why! The beds also aren't that comfortable to be honest. I was told by another guest that they put returning Riu members in the good rooms which would explain why. Food: at first we were really pleased with the selection, some good traditional dishes, fresh fish, meat, salad etc. But they literally never change the menu, breakfast is the same every single day, so is lunch and dinner. It would benefit from some themed nights/ more highlight dishes something with a bit more variety. The cutlery and plates were mostly always dirty too which is a bit gross. The drinks apart from wine and water are all self serve and in the mornings, they give you a carafe of coffee but can't get milk, you have to get that yourself? Bit odd. Staff nice enough in the restaurant. The kulinarium restaraunt was really nice, all the food was piping hot which made me feel like it was kept heated / microwaved, perhaps not, but the starters were better than the mains. I know you could also eat there twice in a week which they have now reduced to just once, which owing to the repetitive nature of the main restaurant could be a good idea to up to two visits per week. Pool: nice enough pool area, plenty of sunbeds for everyone. Pool was way too cold, could do with being heated just a little so it wasnt so piercing to get into as the heat is never enough to compensate for how cold the pool is. No sunbed service around the pool, the bar is okay. Drinks: these are really bad I have to say. Pretty much all the cocktails in the pool bar are from a slushy machine, way too sugary. The ones from the bar in the lobby again not great. Wine is also not great unless you mix it with lemonade which is criminal.. sparkling wine is okay. Beer is so so. Could do with revamping this also, but alot of shortcuts are made to serve people quickly like pre mixed drinks and serve yourself beers, which is a bit cruise ship esque. Entertainment: this was really quite bad. The Elton John tribute was actually very good and everyone enjoyed it, but every other show was not good / thought out. I get we are not in the West end but perhaps a bit of variety would be good like a movie night / something a bit different other than the same people doing a different show each night. Overall: to conclude, if you are looking for a mid priced "okay" Hotel with average food and drinks, but good weather and a good enough pool area then I am sure you will have a great time here. The refurb has clearly been good for custom but they haven't refurbished the hallways, the mahogany doors, the inside swimming pool or the toilets. They are all very dated. We did have a good time despite the challenges at the beginning with the room and the repetitive food, but we won't be returning sadly.

Very good hotel and an enjoyable holiday. Honest review as follows Check in: one of the friendliest and warmest welcomes ever experienced. My wife is a wheelchair user and we were given a disabled adapted room ( having emailed two weeks earlier asking for one and being told they were taken) which was first class. The hotel is excellent for wheelchair access. Pool area: Plenty of sun beds with no need to reserve at the crack of dawn! Nice pool and surroundings. Food: decent food but could improve. Given the size of the restaurant the food area is relatively small so choice could be wider and less repetitive. But quality was fine. Service: in the main it was excellent and very friendly. Julian the barman was by far the best. My impression is that staffing is still down a bit post covid, as there was no table service which is the norm in RIU hotels in my experience. Entertainment: don’t go for the entertainment/animation!! Overall this is a fine hotel and would recommend
