A family-run hotel, in the centre of Granada, close to the main entertainment area in a very secure part of town. The rooms are located at the back of the building overlooking a tropical garden (an ongoing project). The hotel is across the street of a fitness centre, free for our guests. Nearly all Granada's main attractions are within easy walking distance. We can arrange transport to and from the hotel from anywhere in Nicaragua at very reasonable rates.

Great service. Gaby and the dogs welcomed us at the door which was very pleasant. Gaby's son, the cat and dogs are around when you are having your breakfast which gives a certain cosy family vibe. The breakfast is delicious. The room is private, clean and with a garden view. Quit calm place to relax. Would definitely go back when in Granada. Thanks for everything Gaby. We had an amazing stay at your place!

I spent five nights at Il Padrino and found it absolutely ideal. I do a fair amount of independent travel throughout Latin America and I am always on the lookout for hotels that are safe, secure, clean, well-located, and well-priced. Il Padrino easily meets these basic requirements, but it's the other that make me want to come back. The hotel is a lovely colonial-style courtyard building with a large, airy front drawing room and guest rooms that open on the interior garden. The managers, Gaby and Tobey, are multi-lingual and endlessly hospitable. The rooms are good, decorated with striking abstract paintings done by Tobey, with super-comfy mattresses and high thread-count cotton sheets. Granada has a hot climate -- at night with the ceiling fan on and the doors open to the garden, I slept like a baby. It's a three-minute walk to a great place for breakfast, and a five minute walk to the center of town. WiFi and coffee in the morning ... it all worked for me!

We were the first guests to stay in Hotel la Mesa del Padrino. Steven was very welcoming and we felt at home right away. The rooms are spacious and all look out into the garden. The location is a very good one. It is in walking distance to Calzada, and the market. There is a shared kitchen so you can do your own cooking.
If you need any information about different places to go all you need to do is talk to Steven, who is a wealth of information. I highly recommend staying here. we have been here for 3 months.

Il Padrino is a series of buildings on one street that's very close to the square and tourist strip, and confusingly, although it was a perfectly adequate stay, it didn't hit my expectations: not for any particularly negative reasons, but because it appears to be more of a hostel than a hotel - perhaps a hostel converting itself to a hotel. I typically like staying in a more conventional mid-range place, and was slightly confused when i arrived because i expected something different. Admittedly my taxi driver was quite crushing about it on the way: "I don't like that hotel. Is ugly". That's unfair, obviously, as the pretty garden and general property are immaculately kept. One of the outbuildings also has a pool, but from what i was told, it's undergoing a few renovations.
The property feels slightly smaller and potentially more cramped than the photos depict; the layout is very much open-plan, and in self-catering style with shared facilities. It's for the independent traveller with extra bucks to spend - up-market backpacker-esque - rather than a typical tourist hotel. The vibe is very relaxed, and the British owners are genuinely lovely: i'd argue the critical reviews below are a mischaracterization of both Gaby and Toby. They're both private and reserved people whose gentleness may have been misunderstood as indifference. A little British eccentricity made it even more homely for me, along with the very friendly travel advice they were more than willing to give without even having to ask.
Two things did really pain me though - first being the AC. Maybe someone with more scientific knowledge can expand on it, but somehow the temperature inside the fan-cooled Swedish-style room was much higher than the milder air outside. It was like it was heated - and with the fan blasting at Mach 5, it's difficult to sleep. I suspect the room not coming with towels is a BYO-backpacker hangover.
The second was the wifi, as mentioned before - it's currently only really usable in the main lobby area, which is not great if you want to call back home on Skype and have a private call. Apparently the reason is that extending it has so far meant putting in 50m of cabling through the building, which has been prohibitive. Fixing that is a relatively simple thing with a few wifi repeater units, which i know the hotel are looking at. For the meantime though, there is generally no wifi signal in the rooms that are any distance away from the main reception area.
Overall, it wasn't a fit for me personally, as i was expecting something else from the name and photos. If you're backpacking it or going the indie self-catering route with cash (no cards), it's exactly the kind of up-market hostel that's perfect to explore Granada from. However, if you're expecting a hotel-style stay, it's not quite there yet.

Response from Stephen C, Owner at Il Padrino Hotel
Responded Feb 12, 2014
I have travelled through most of the world for many years, at times for pleasure but mostly in pursuit of work for my small lighting company. Many times I was away for many months at a time. When the hotel was built, I asked myself what would have I liked to have found as a weary traveller. What I would have most appreciated would have been a spotlessly clean and well maintained place, Many times I had landed, need dictated, in hotels with cockroaches rushing across the wall to hide in some mysterious crack and a couple of times even with bedbugs in otherwise respectable hotels. I would have liked an interesting looking place with a little character, not necessarily the Taj Mahal, and a relaxed atmosphere where one can walk around bare feet. I have always wanted to feel safe. I would have liked my host to have been present but not oppressively so; there for a chat or a bit of information if I had wanted it and of course some basic services like laundry, internet, TV although the latter has never been a priority for me, and maybe a massage after 20 hours on the plane and hanging around in airports. My concept was not a middle class view of a medium priced hotel but a haven where I could fortify myself and prepare for the rest of the journey ahead. And yes, some times, nauseated by the thought of more fufu or gallo pinto, I craved for a plate of spaghetti olio, olio e peroncino or a salad mixed with decent oil as mama made it. Not that I wanted to 'cook' my way through the continents; just the occasional treat. Is this a backpacker's place? Well maybe so in a good sense but not, I think, in the way that Alex intended. Maybe he has not been, or not been recently, to a backpacker's place where you pay 5 or 10$ per night. It would serve him well to visit one. I think that Alex's 'catty' and well disguised comments were dictated by a small confrontation we had over what I considered strange behaviour on his part. A nice fellow otherwise. Oh, and be aware, when a taxi driver in Granada says 'I do not like this place, I have a better one for you', it is because when he brings an unexpected client to a hotel, he receives a kick back. Inexperienced travellers be weary, the hotel where he brings you is not necessarily better!

My wife and I stayed here for 5 nights, beautiful rooms that overlook a lovely private garden.
Gaby and Toby are great hosts, and will help with anything you need.
Very clean and comfortable. The breakfast and coffee also tasty.
They have two dogs and a cat, which is great for a pat if you are missing your pets back home.
The location couldn't be better. Short walk to town, but can't hear the noise at night.
Also, Oscar the cab driver that they can send to the airport to collect you is a real character!
Would love to stay again.

Stayed for only a night in a beautiful, clean and spacious room. The owners were amazing with their food and trip recommendations. Although we had reservations for another hotel for the next 2 days we came back each day and had all our trips and transpotation handled by them. Super friendly dogs chilling in the lounge. Fast internet and a big kitchen. An absolute treat

We are so grateful to Toby and Gaby for all their help, advice and hospitality. This amazing young couple run the Il Padrino guesthouse by themselves, a busy accommodation in hip and happening Granada. On a sleepy Sunday afternoon we missed a bus connection onward to our next destination on the Pacific Coast and these guys offered to drive us south some of the way and ended up bringing us all the way to our next destination. If it wasn't for them, who knows where we might have ended up spending the night (as they were fully booked for the night too - so take note, book in advance!).
The rooms are very tastefully decorated and very clean. Great location too, a couple of blocks from the main plaza, taking advantage of being on a quiet street away from the bustle. Great price per night, given the inflated costs in Granada versus other parts of Nicaragua. I highly recommend a stay at Il Padrino in Granada and would definitely stay here again.

So this place was about as good as it gets for under $40 a night in Granada. The room was big and clean and the bed was comfortable .. these are the best things it has going for it.
The bathroom is spacious but the shower is absolute rubbish. When I mentioned (twice) how this could be fixed (easily) there was no attempt to rectify.
There is great art and furniture everywhere here, all done by Toby, the guy running the place. The wifi does not reach the rooms so you must sit in the common area to use the internet. The common areas though are lifeless and there is no vibe at all. The guest kitchen is unusable due to the amount of mosquitos but Toby was great about letting us use his kitchen and fridge.
The mosquitos are an absolute nightmare in the entire hotel but especially near and in the rooms.
There is a lovely sweet dog here named Spot who will melt your heart and a lazy cat who sleeps all day and lives the life we can only dream of. They both add to the homely feel here but as with all else here they need more love and attention.
This place was once a gem, I am sure of it, and it can be again(!) but Toby seems disinterested and so the vibe of the place is heavy. He is a really sweet guy, I hope that he can find a way back to putting his heart into this place because it truly could be the best place in Granada with a little love and attention.

I was travelling as a solo tourist in Nicaragua in january and someone from trip advisor suggested this little hotel and I am so pleased to have stayed there. For the money it was above and beyond my expectations. toby and Stephen the owners made my trip so memorable albeit that i was only there for two nights. They went out of their way to make sure that i got the max out of Granada for which I am ever grateful. I absolutely loved their house, it was like being in a friends house rather than a hotel, my room was so serene and i loved the exquiste art and the quirks with the furniture...check the legs!....I dearly hope to return...i felt so secure and welcome there...thank you Toby and Stephen. I cannot reccomend this place highly enough

I have been staying at Il Padrino for almost 2 months.
The hotel is a small, newly built, family run establishment of a high standard, moments from the centre of Granada. The rooms are large with en-suite bathrooms and TV. Wi-fi internet access is available in the communal area where tables are provided. There is a kitchen area for the use of guests and I understand that there will also be a restaurant soon.
The owners are very friendly and helpful and the place is kept spotless by a very hard-working woman – well not completely spotless as the owner's dog is called Spot!!
I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Il Padrino and would highly recommend it.

Hello Nick,
Thank you for contacting us, we have 2 rooms with 1 queen size bed + 1 twin size bed and private bathroom.
Let me know if you have any further queries.
Kind regards,
Gaby
Hello Darlene,
All our rooms are non-smoking rooms, but we have designated areas were you can smoke.
Kind regards,
Gaby
No a/c... it is not common in Nicaragua… The rooms are well shaded and the fans do enough of the trick to make it "not miserable"
I also rented a car in Granada, but chose to not have it at this hotel. The owner parks her car at another spot, and you could maybe ask Gaby if you could park yours there too. It is super safe to walk around, but I wouldn't park a rental car there.
