I found their services were limited and under conditions, some conditions were untold and unwritten.

Resort’s rules were relatively highly detailed i.e. (1) leftover breakfast will be charged 100 THB per 100 g, (2) food taken out of breakfast area will cost 200 THB per 100 g, (3) dress code during breakfast (weird, considering that you are on your beach holiday not academic conference) etc.

For me, these highly (told and untold) conditional services made unnecessarily unrelaxed and unbreathable atmosphere.

The examples of the untold/unwritten/unclear conditional services are (1) in-villa breakfast needs to be ordered 1 day in advance, (2) romantic dinner needs to be ordered 1 day in advance (although another staff said ‘3 hours in advance’, another one said ‘depends on weather’ and another one said ‘cannot be served in room’ and another one said ‘can be served in room’).

The hotel is full of trainees, inexperienced, untrained staffs. These kind of staffs can be seen as unintentionally unhelpful. They see the whole business through the eyes of ‘trainee’. They would lecture you about the resort rules just like how they had been lectured. A few untrained waiters coughed while standing behind my head/back. Sometimes you needed to speak to 5 trainees and received various different answers before getting 1 simple problem fixed. I felt more like I was ‘teaching them’ rather than ‘had been serviced by them’.

The intentionally unhelpful staffs were minority but interesting. This intentionally unhelpful staffs can help, but choose not to and even stop other staffs to do so. The food and beverage division was the case. After several occasions, we stopped hoping for unexpected hospitality/generosity, we only hoped to receive the service they promised.

In more specific details;

On my first breakfast I found the air condition (AC) in the buffet venue was leaking dirty water into the food, plates and cutlery, guests etc. To me, this is serious as it can contaminate food and cause consequential health problems at the cost of the guests.

We brought the issue to the manager, however, he replied ‘as you can see, everything is under operation now. People are having their breakfasts and I just can’t stop the whole thing to fix the problematic AC’.

Yet, the dirty water had been leaking for the next consecutive days throughout our stay and we avoided food served under that particular AC.

I got diarrhea and felt very dizzy on my 3rd morning during breakfast. We all (4 of us) didn’t have much breakfast because of my sickness. We decided to come back to the room for me to use toilet and rest. I wasn’t too worried about kids not eating enough because I knew we had our privilege in-villa breakfast service that we could order anytime from 7-10am. After I rested and felt better, I phoned the breakfast restaurant attempting to ask for coconuts (good for diarrhea) and bread basket for kids. The answer was ‘no’. The reason was my breakfast was already consumed, so, it’s done.

At this point, we still hoped that we could take the service from this division as it is. I then decided to extend 2 extra nights on our pool villa suite at the cost of 13,000++ THB a night. We decided to stay because of the resort’s landscape, and the cleanliness of the accommodation.

However, my last straw was when we tried to order ‘in-room breakfast’ on our 5th morning (raining heavily, more difficult with young kids), and were informed that it was impossible because we must reserve that one day in advance, while this rule has never been told and/or written anywhere.

In their breakfast order papers (laid on desk in the villa, please see picture), it’s only said ‘please clearly indicate the meal items for your breakfast. We are happy to serve you as much as you can eat, but any leftover food will be charged at THB100/100 g’.

There’s no information about having to ‘order one-day in advance’ written anywhere.

When I explained this to a Thai staff at the breakfast restaurant, she understood my situation from my point of view and told me that they would try their best to serve the breakfast (thank you guys).

However, around 5 mins later, I got a phone call from the same Thai staff saying that they can’t do it anymore, because their manager told them not to.

I think this became too unfair because: (1) I did not know about their untold rule (2) it was raining and difficult for us (3) the breakfast restaurant could fix this but they chose not to (4) I paid for the service at the cost of THB 13,000++, but did not receive the service

I talked to Tom, the front office manager who doesn’t seem to have any authority over anyone or anything, about my problem. The answers were as expected; (1) No, he can’t intervene this (2) No, he doesn’t have an authority to do that (3) Yes, he understands me but sorry can’t help.

We decided to leave the resort immediately which was a shame…. as the resort’s landscape is really distinctively beautiful.

The view is great. The food is quite good and reasonably priced. And the common facilities are nice (swimming pool, etc.). The staff is helpful and kind. Reception can benefit from an extra training (we had to ask for a welcome drink, i had to explain that i am resident and i do not need a thai pass, they refused my driver license as identity document, etc.) The only major inconvenient we found is the room we got. It’s quite old with relatively old furniture. The hotel would benefit from rooms renovation. Overall good experience but nothing outstanding. I would definitely come back and recommend it if they modernize the rooms.

Dear YassineBlmn, Thank you very much for your comments. We are happy to hear that you loved our views, our restaurant and that you found our staff to be helpful and kind. We are sorry to hear about the confusion with regards to the Thailand Pass and delay on serving the welcome drink. With regards to the drivers license as a form of identification, we are required by immigration to send passports of all our international guests, the Thai license is unfortunately not legally valid. We have just completed the full renovation of 31 pool front rooms and suites, our main lobby and the brand new pool bar. In addition to this, we will move on to renovate another 50 of our beachfront rooms meaning that well over half of our resort will be completely revamped. We hope we can welcome you back soon. Best Regards, Tom Storup Executive Assistant Manager

The location is beautiful and the resort is isolated (not walkable to anything). If you need a retreat with little to no activities - then this place is good. One can only lay by the pool/beach and go to the spa as the main activities. For a weekend, this is a good pick - any longer and you may go stir crazy unless you need to detune your life. This resort is on a hill, so expect lots of hiking or waiting a long time for the tram. The breakfast was good too! The rooms are not well insulated, so heard kids running and not even directly above us, but several rooms away. Also, the cleaning carts make a loud noise as they roll through the echo chamber of the halls. The staff is poorly trained. While they are friendly, it's clear management has no idea what they are doing. When asked about the activities shown in their directory guide - they had no idea how to book. There is no concierge, so that should explain their level of staffing expertise for a resort!

Now that I have left Thailand, I can post this review with the hotel threatening to jail me for posting a bad review. The management and owners of this hotel do not care about guest experience. They do not care about the guests having a good experience and have jailed a previous guest for placing a bad review. The rooms are dirty and the breakfast was much worse than advertised. The view from the hotel is good, but they need new management ASAP

This place you think would do well but treated guess badly. I got a lot of I don’t care attitude by the staff and it seem like I was bothering them to ask for any service. Do not go here if you want a good stay at a hotel.

Such a great hotel, big spacious room, very large comfortable bed, lovely bathroom. The staff are so friendly and helpful. Good breakfast. Such good value for money. The hotel is on the foothills of Phuket, peaceful but still not to far from the town

I’ve been to better hotels in Thailand. Spa section is nice but everything else quite average and a lot of things are worn out, like the furniture. In this price range you can propably find more bang for your buck, felt a bit overpriced for what you actually get. If you don’t plan to spend too much time at the hotel then it doesn’t matter that much, but in my experience you can get very high quality accomodation for a fraction of European prices in Thailand if you a willing to put in some time to compare options

A very average experience at the hotel. Many things closed due to covid including breakfast on a couple of days. No sign of a 5 star experience merely a 3 star stay. Rooms are old and outdated and sun loungers falling apart by the pool. (No sign of renovations mentioned on other reviews other than those being done still (eg no pool bar)! Excellent spa attached to the resort with great service (best thing about the hotel). Amazing view from the balcony’s Friendly staff but limited and even with very guests room service took an age also note hotel doesnt honour all benefits on room deal and discounts offered on booking so watch the pricing and take the cheapest price as you’ll no doubt spend more time away from the resort

Dear Matthew H, Thank you for choosing to stay with us on your recent trip to Koh Chang. We are sorry to hear that your experience with us was not more than just average. Due to the current international and local travel restrictions, all resorts around Thailand have been hit with very low occupancy rates, and ours is no exception. This has therefore limited the number of services we can provide these days and you can see how this has impacted our room rates which have up to 70% discount. We are delighted to hear that you loved our award-winning Rainforest Spa and the service provided by our staff and, of course, our signature room views which many agree are the best on the island. We hope we can welcome you back once the travel restrictions are lifted and all our facilities including the new pool bar are up and running. I will be more than happy to walk around the new facilities with you and show you all the drastic improvements we have worked on over the last year. Best Regards, Tom Storup Rooms Division Manager

We stayed at Villa 008, private villas in a private zone. You need your key to get in and out of that zone. The room is 5 stars standard as top rated hotels. They pay attention even the water in the bathtub when u get back. Its warm enough just to dip in.

The resort is very dated. Nothing really stands out. its hard to say what is worse, the dated rooms and common areas or the the employees/hotel management who seem to think that Covid means that they need to eliminate what was already a below average service in the name of Covid. Thailand has so many resorts that deserve your money, don't encourage the bad ones by patronizing them. Maybe one day the hotel will be sold and completely redone, but until that day its pretty safe to pass on this place. Also it seems like any negative response they receive, they have an auto response that says something like "this review is retaliation for recent media events", referring to the fact that the hotel had a guest arrested for leaving a negative review and refused to drop charges until the guest was blackmailed into writing a forced apology and removing their review" And if some of the other negative reviews are in deed because of that, then thats even more of a reason to stay away from this hotel just on principle. Im sure they'll reply to my review with the same script, as it never occurs to them that maybe they just run an old outdated hotel with virtually no service.
