Your destination in the mountains of Bath County Virginia for unique architecture, outdoor adventure and classic American style cuisine. Family owned for 28 years. Like most country inns, we trade in a change of pace, romance, and exceptional fare. But, it is the comforting seclusion of the mountains, forests, fields and streams that truly sets historical Fort Lewis apart. A 3200 acre estate ready to be explored. Outdoor activities abound with hiking, biking, trout fishing or simply relaxing by the Lodge's pristine swimming hole. We are best known for our food, and a farm fresh breakfast and dinner, served family-style, are included in your stay.

We spent 3 days at Fort Lewis Lodge and had a fantastic experience. The setting is really beautiful and the hospitality is first class. We staying in the Andrew Lewis Cottage which is one of the newer cottages and we were amazed at how modern and chic it was. The recreational opportunities are unlimited whether you like biking, hiking, jogging, fishing, kayaking or doing absolutely nothing. Highly recommend Fort Lewis Lodge.

I now understand why everyone we met at the lodge had been there before and return when they can. Between the nearby hiking and the cleanest river water I've ever seen to tub and kayak on our days were active and evenings were wonderful enjoining the scenery and relaxing on our cabins porch or the pavilion. You should see the field lit up with fireflies. Breakfast and dinner are included in the room price and the food is fresh and delicious. The servers and staff couldn't be friendlier and helpful too. I am now one of guests who will be a regular too!

Fantastic experience! This seems to be the first review of Fort Lewis Lodge in the time of Covid-19, so I will focus on how well they have pivoted to address the new challenges. Except as specifically mentioned here, you should expect the same service, friendliness, beautiful grounds and wonderful overall experience reflected in previous five bubble guest reviews. You can also find a detailed description of the health and safety efforts that Fort Lewis Lodge has put in place on the Lodge's website.

Erin greeted us when we arrived wearing a mask, and provided touchless check in. As far as we could see, all staff wore masks when interacting with guests, when servicing rooms and while in common areas. Guest were expected to wear masks in common areas except when sitting at their tables, and hand sanitizer was available throughout. Guests who did not want their rooms cleaned daily just had to leave the do not disturb sign on their door. If they needed additional items, e.g. soap, towels and trash bags, they just had to ask and staff would bring them to the door.

At breakfast and dinner, Erin or David came by each table individually to let us know it was time to come inside to get food. When we came in (masked) we could look at a paper menu with that meal’s items, and then ask for a sampler of everything, or pick particular items together with what we wanted to drink. We brought our loaded plates back to our tables, and they brought out our selected drinks. Later, a staff member came by each table to ask if we wanted more of anything and, at dinner time, again to ask if we wanted desert or coffee. One thing to note if you are concerned about eating inside (as we were), there are by my count only eight open air tables (by my count five fully outside, and three more in Bucks Beer and Wine Bar which is covered and has only screens on three sides), so if that’s important to you as it was for us, you should arrive near the beginning of the evening cocktail hour or a few minutes before 9am for breakfast to stake out the table you want. For those who are comfortable eating inside, the table were spaced well over six feet apart.

Outside there are expansive and beautiful grounds and wonderful hiking trails where you may not see another sole, but in any event where it is very easy to be physically distant from everyone else.

All and all we had a terrific pandemic-conscious experience, with great food and service that always felt safe. I can’t recommend highly enough!

Our stay at this accommodation was nothing short of extraordinary. The home-cooked meals were a highlight of our lives, surpassing even the experiences we've had at Michelin-starred restaurants. Every dish was crafted with care, and the flavors were simply unforgettable.

The atmosphere was peaceful and relaxing, making it the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The hosts were incredibly friendly and welcoming, ensuring that our stay was comfortable and enjoyable from start to finish.

We will undoubtedly be back. This place has set a new standard for hospitality and dining. Highly recommended!

My husband and I had the best time celebrating our anniversary at the Fort Lewis Lodge. We loved staying in the silo room and the whole property is gorgeous and so peaceful. And the food is AMAZING! I am Gluten Free and the whole staff was so accommodating and literally everything was delicious and tasted so fresh. Plus, it was located not far from the Hot Springs so we spent an afternoon there. Overall, highly recommend. Everyone was so friendly and the property was gorgeous!

First the pro’s: beautiful setting, for the price breakfast and dinner included, rural setting so all the peace and quiet anyone could want - way off the beaten path (about 30 miles) and not close to anything. Clean, beautiful river perfect for fishing behind the lodge and cabins.

Now the cons: Food was good but wasn’t the variety for breakfast as shown on website sample menu. There is no place to grab a bite except for dinner at the lodge served at 7:45 and breakfast at 9 a. From what I understand you can reserve one of the small cottages or cabins and I assume they have kitchen facilities, but the lodge doesn’t except for a coffeemaker. Our room was fine, pretty comfortable decorated as advertised but, and this is the problem for us, our bathroom was in very poor shape. The shower curtain and liner were both stained and dirty. The bathroom ceiling had mold in the corner and big cracks around the vent fan. Our towels were very thin. I have stayed in hotels with less than average bathrooms but this was one of the worst.

Response from Erin Framel, Marketing at Fort Lewis Lodge

Thank you for the feedback! Our menus for breakfast and dinner change daily so that guests get to eat something different at each meal. The sample menus on our website reflect meals that are frequently served, but I'm sorry you didnt get the variety you desired on the morning of your visit. In addition to what's on the daily breakfast menu, we always offer fresh fruit, yogurt and cereal as a second or additional option and we are always happy to accommodate any dietary restrictions when given advanced notice. Additionally, picnic lunches are available to be ordered after breakfast each morning. We sincerely apologize for the issues with the bathroom. We are in the process of renovating our Lodge bathrooms so some rooms have newly renovated facilities and more will be renovated by next year. We recently replaced our towel inventory and apologize that somehow older towels were stocked in your room. The issue with the shower curtain will be addressed with our staff as well. Thank you for coming to visit us and we hope if you choose to stay again that we can provide you a 5 star experience.

We had a recent stay at Fort Lewis Lodge & Farm. It exceeded our expectations!!
John and Caryl have created a masterful place for guests to stay and enjoy nature
all around. John is a farmer with intentions to better all the land and cattle he takes care of. He's also a craftsman as reflected in our mahogany headboard, and the many cabins he has built with all the comforts for guests.
Now to the home-cooked breakfast and dinner. Caryl plans and prepares every meal. The food is fresh, flavorful and such a variety of casseroles, salad, and home baked muffins and cake. We have never had such wholesome, tasty food. Their property offers so many adventures you could stay a week and maybe not do everything there is to do. The staff are friendly, attentive, and genuine. We can't wait to go back. Thank you, Caryl and John, for providing such a magical place.
I must add that their son David and his wife Erin are working with John and Caryl now, which only adds to the hospitality.
Thank you so much to the entire team!
Best,
Wendy & Ken

We searched for a quiet remote setting with outdoor activities. The Lodge is a rustic retreat with fishing, hiking and many other outdoor activities which are outlined on the website. The family style dining is somewhat unique but the quality of the food was excellent. The staff is friendly, accommodating, and the owners are frequently actively engaged with the guests. We were quite surprised to meet other guests who have been staying here an a regular basis for many years. Our only disappointment was the cleanliness of our room which could use a thorough cleaning of the dust bunnies, especially under the bed and furniture. We understand the cabins are in high demand and booked far in advance; there are currently two additional cabins under construction.

This trip originally was supposed to be a getaway trip for my husband and I but last minute we had to bring our 6 year old. I was concerned we would be the only ones with a child but I felt at ease when I saw more families show up. We stayed in the Andrew cottage which was just beautiful. The bed was so comfortable, the room was so clean and we had the best view of the cow pasture. Now on to the food. I absolutely loved the food. My son who is very picky ate so much food that weekend. As far as activities go we decided to go hiking and have a picnic. We also spent time playing ping pong with the other families and went to the swimming hole to watch others fish. The water was definitely cold to go into. The whole place is just beautiful and the family who runs it are just so nice and accommodating. I wish we would of stayed 3 nights instead of 2 is my only regret.

I have wanted Fort Lewis Lodge for years and it did not disappoint. As we drove along scenic rural roads my family asked me where I was taking them. As soon as we arrived the journey was clearly worthwhile. We were first greeted by friendly farm animals that my son and I gave treats to each morning. The property is magnificent with a beautiful pristine river running through it. The big surprise was how delicious the food was. The staff was friendly and accommodated my son's food allergies at every meal by setting aside a separate plate made just for him. I can't wait to visit again.

We have been going to Ft Lewis about 25 years. When our grandchildren were young, under 5, we took them once. There have been young children recently who were well behaved and quiet and did not seem to bother other guests. It is a great place for all ages to explore and enjoy.

In the past we have not allowed pets, but as of this year we are updating our policies to allow dogs for an additional fee of $20/night. You must contact the lodge in advance of your stay so specific details/requirements can be discussed.

Do rooms have TV's?
Answer from 11cph
Virginia Beach, Virginia21 contributions17 helpful votes
There's a TV in the common area in the Lodge and there is a TV in two of the cabins. We chose a cabin without ... and were glad we did. I completely UNPLUGGED. We ventured to the Homestead for lunch one day and there were TVs galore in the Jefferson Restaurant. Jefferson would have disapproved. We left disappointed and were happy to return to the Lodge. BTW, their lunches at the Lodge are GREAT! We ate out on their pavilion looking over the pasture. We were able to talk to each other with cattle and birds providing the background noise ... not 6 TVs. The Lodge's website has the details on TV locations.
