My wife and I like to take short trips throughout the Northeast - New England and Mid-Atlantic states to get away or to celebrate anniversaries or birthdays. After doing research, we came upon Salamander, and thought it would be the right place for our anniversary and it did not disappoint. The grounds are beautiful as you approach the hotel - we wish we had more time than we did to explore and walk around outside on the trails. We really enjoyed the room - spacious and comfortable with a nice small sectional in the corner by the balcony, a table with a few chairs and a bench at the end of the bed. The bathroom was big with a stand-in shower and tub. We had a decent view from our balcony, but probably preferred the back view of the expansive lawn We were able to enjoy the spa- although we wish we had more time to explore the spa beyond the treatment we got. It would have been nice if they allowed you to enjoy the spa area on other days while you are staying at the resort. The resort is also close enough to many vineyards, breweries, Shenandoah National Park and Luray Caverns that we got to explore. We enjoyed a nice meal outdoors on the terrace at Harriman's. A little on the pricey side, but that seemed to be the case with some of the high end restaurants in the area. Service was terrific throughout from the front desk, wait staff, valet, and spa staff. We'd be happy to return to Salamander as there were still plenty more to explore at the resort and the general area.

For a supposed upscale resort they nickel and dime for everything. 900$ to use the archery 150$ to use the bikes Left at least 5 messages for equestrian reservation that were never answered. Would never go back.

We've been here 5 times, every time we come its a worse experience. Our last trip we vowed we wouldn't be back, but my husband had a conference there this week, so I joined him. The food at the hotel is worse than ever-$55 lobster roll that tasted like bleach, crab cakes that smelled like they'd gone off and DRENCHED in sriracha (a culinary travesty), a $22 dollar "local greens" salad that was wet and lacked dressing. This morning my room service breakfast was wrong, despite repeating the order back to me twice. But perhaps the worst thing (something I didn't realize on previous trips because I've only ever been here when it's cold) is that the nicest pool is only accessible to guests who spend $200+ at the spa for a treatment (my $90 pedicure didn't count). This smacks of greed and is a bit tacky. I want so much to like this hotel, but some serious changes need to happen.

We "stumbled" upon the Salamander when looking for a vacation we could drive to, but, feel worlds away from our NYC home. This is it! A five day summer vacation with our two young children and another family. A wonderful time was had by all!!! Lots of activities for all ages. Beautiful grounds, although, I do agree with others that it seems a bit disjointed (example: the family pool is a hike to get to and lacking amenities like food service and size). The staff is wonderful, clearly trained and uniformed. A big shout out to Navona and Mateo at the family pool for their friendliness. The spa is serene and wonderful service. Rooms are large and the gym is clean and stocked with new equipment. We took advantage of some of the activities (not cheap!) as well as fishing (free!) and the family board games (also free!). Harrimans restaurant is expensive, but, to be expected. A great place to visit for groups.
