It isn't a surprise that Primland is beautiful, given that it lies in something like 14,000 acres in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. The Lodge is warm and pretty; the cottages as well. The food is excellent. There are lots of activities. But what makes Primland really special are its people - everyone: receptionists, chefs, management, and all the rest of the staff are caring and competent and friendly people.

A rich man’s play Paradise of hunting before it became a hotel. The property is remarkably remote, huge and beautiful. You can go on a great hike with the Naturalist. You can ride through the forest on your own ATV. The hotel itself spared no expense on materials and furnishings. I’m not even a golfer. But for a golfer this place is paradise. Excellent indoor swimming pool. Nice gym. Excellent main restaurant. Reserve main dining WAY in advance of your stay. Only other option for 30 miles is tiny bar menu and bar space. Auberge Group just got involved. Service is likely to improve greatly. A good value. Be careful out there! While we’re were staying there a guest departed from the marked trail and found himself dead at the bottom of a ravine.

First, let me start by saying my Primland stay in 2014 was fabulous making my visit 12 days ago especially disappointing. Our reservations were made before the resort joined Auberge so our cottage was not the current $1000 to $1200 per night, but at the price we paid, we expected the usual 5 star amenities found at previous Auberge visits. Our cottage was a mess. The curtain linings were torn to shreds, furniture was scratched, the shower needed cleaning and the cabinets in the kitchenette were dirty and we had the company of a roach and our coffemaker didn't work. We immediately contacted housekeeping about the coffeemaker and were told they did no more in inventory. I walked to the lodge and requested the manager. He was gone so I spoke with the shift supervisor and showed him pictures of the damage and he also expressed concern. He said he would contact housekeeping again for cleaning, but after dinner, there were no changes. What was very concerning was no one contacted me for follow-up on the issue. When I spoke with the shift manager, he assured me he would discuss these issues with the manager. That is poor customer service. It appears they've neglected certain rooms during the COVID shutdown and if that was the case, our cabin, Woodpecker East, should not have been booked until inspected. I sincerely hope this is not what Auberge accepts for luxury lodging at Primland. They need to update and remodel before they get more low ratings as it is a beautiful place.

We stayed in the Lodge and our view was #10 tee and #18 green. Beautiful grounds and accommodations. The golf course was immaculate and it ate a couple of my ProV1s. The entire staff is beyond courteous and willing to help with anything. Our paddle board guide, Isaac, was top notch. He was a calming voice and excellent teacher. We had a quick moment where we needed to get off the water because we thought lightning was near. Isaac, instinctively helped my eleven-year-old daughter get to the shore safely. Many thanks for that care. We will definitely return to Primland.

Primland has a gorgeous lodge with a beautiful setting and I am truly excited to see what happens with the property over the next several years. The lodge is intimate, and a great option during COVID times given the size. They also seemed to be taking every precaution for both guests and their staff which was nice to see. The staff across the board all seemed very happy and that came through in their greetings, excitement to share details about the property and history and general demeanor. By far, the coolest thing about Primland is the observatory. We had a lovely tour of it, but unfortunately had too much cloud cover during our stay to be able to use the telescope. That feature alone will likely bring me back. The golf course was also in fantastic condition, though we did not play as we were there with two toddlers. While Primland does have a lot of activities for kids, they are heavily geared towards older children, and I wouldn't recommend going with kids under the age of 6 or 7 when there are so many resorts of the same caliber who really cater to families of all ages. The entire staff was very welcoming and we had a nice time with hikes, the amazing pool and the game room, but it would have been nice to be able to do even a led horse ride. We were able to get the kids spa mani/pedis which was nice and they enjoyed. The spa was great with them and has a nice little relaxation area. The suite we were in was very spacious, and very nicely appointed. The beds are HEAVEN. We had a huge tub, separate shower and a very large living area with a pull out sofa, indoor dining area and outdoor dining area. The automatic blackout shades were fantastic and really elevated the overall experience of the room. There were two dying dying plants in our room - greenery in a large floor pot and an orchid that was yellowing which really brought down the room. It was very clean, and would have been better off without those. The lobby and public spaces had very fresh, lovely flowers, so they can be done away with in the rooms if the rooms aren't conducive to keeping them alive. Our favorite dinner was at Stables Saloon with live music, and an amazing view from the outside. The views from all over the property are stunning, especially at sunset. But every meal was excellent across the board. The menu is varied and every dish we tried was fantastic and fresh. Room service was both quick and reasonable which we appreciated as we never had to call down to see where it was. They beat the estimated time each time we ordered. We would return, likely as a couple/romantic trip or wait until our kids are older.

I am so happy to hear that your Primland experience was an enjoyable one for all of the family. It sounds as if you were able to do a lot and we appreciate the feedback. We use these reviews as a tool in learning what is working for the resort and our guests and what is not. Your feedback is valuable. We have recently added the age limit to some of our activities so it has eliminated some of them for the younger set of children. Due to this - we are currently in the process of adding more programs to the younger children - ie Meet the Horses with a Ring Ride, pond fishing, etc. We also added the Fairy Door Hiking Trail last year and are adding on to this. It was good to hear your comments as it verified that these are programs we need to add. We hope to have them in place the next time you visit - when you come back to do the Deep Space Star Gazing in the Observatory (so sorry the weather didnt allow this during your visit - it is amazing and well worth a return visit.). I will share your comments with all of our departments so they can not only read the wonderful comments you shared but also address the areas were we need to improve or fix. Again, thank you so very much and we look forward to welcoming you all back to the Blue Ridge Mountains. Best, Julee
