Primland, part of the Auberge Resorts Collection, garners praise for its extensive amenities, from family activities to a range of dining experiences, though some see room for improvement in the spa and transport services. The staff's warm and professional service is often highlighted, despite occasional inconsistencies. Guests are consistently impressed with the cleanliness across the luxurious rooms, pristine golf course, and well-kept grounds.
Although the atmosphere is celebrated for its blend of luxury and rustic charm, some travelers feel the pricing doesn't always equate to value. The hotel's location offers stunning views and a unique, high-end retreat atmosphere, yet there are remarks suggesting the rooms could benefit from more thorough cleaning.

Detailed Reviews
We stayed for 3 nights in a Dan River suite in the pinnacles cottages. The room was beautiful, great layout and comfortable furniture.
The resort is very expensive, the room, food and activities are all costly. It could never be described as a good value, particularly at present where the pool is reservation only and the spa facilities are closed (reportedly the spa is open for treatments but no one ever answered the phone). I think if you are planning to come here you need to set the expectation that you are going to have to spend a lot of money. They charged $8 for a glass of OJ, it's ludicrous, so if you feel that this sort of outrage will totally ruin your trip then go someplace else.
If you can acclimate yourself to the expense, then I think that this is a great place for a short pandemic vacation. The staff were all lovely. The golf course is beautiful and very well maintained. The hiking trails were well marked and easily accessible from the lodge. I felt that the covid precautions were adequate to feel safe, everyone is required to mask indoors and no one will come in to service your room unless you ask them too. We asked for extra towels and coffee pods at the front desk and they gave us a bag so we could take them back ourselves.
The restaurants do appear to be understaffed, the food options are very limited and our food often took a long time, so don't cut it too close to your tee time. I think if you were staying more than a few nights you would have to start repeating meals. Fortunately everything we had to eat was excellent.
So in summary, if you are desperate to get out of your house for a little while and are willing to pay somewhat extravagant prices to do so, Primland is a good option.

We appreciate you taking the time to spread the word on Primland and happy we were able to make your quarantine a little bit more adventurous outside of your home! It is easy to self distance on 12,000 acres of open air and woods. It is exciting for us with each new phase where we can start using / opening up additional areas and amenities of the hotel. Each new phase has been a "learning experience" for the hotel and team. This is definitely a new situation for hospitality and we appreciate guests coming and sharing their time with us. It was wonderful to welcome guests back to the mountain. We do hope that you will return to the mountain and enjoy more of what Primland has to offer. Please be safe. Julee

I was on a cross country trip and booked one night via AMEX not realizing it was actually an hour off Route 81, but so glad I made this mistake! Would return for more days for a middle of nowhere getaway to explore outside, see wildlife, take advantage of spa. Gorgeous country roads (that I never would try and do in the dark) that bring you to such a lovely retreat, all worth it! They did a nice job with COVID precautions. It is self park under the lodge at this point, and they originally had me set up in a cottage room which would have required back and forth for dining, they were nice enough to move me into the lodge building so I could be lazy. Good (not life changing, but didn’t feel like Elements as it was indoors) dinner and live music outdoors which was special given the times, taking advantage of the pub style menu, Adam took great care of me. The room on top floor was gorgeous and I thought very well designed, although lots of buttons were a bit confusing, as was tv, but with less than a day there I didn’t bother to ask. Breakfast in the room was a bit odd, served in a bag, not a tray, with coffee mate as the creamer option, not sure if this was all a COVID thing, but seemed a lot to pay for a not special delivery/execution. The Salamander resort night two did a more traditional (and better) job with this.

We too are so pleased that you "happened upon us" on your cross country road trip (sounds amazing!). We love it when someone discovers Primland and then becomes a "family" member of our team. You definitely need to return and spend a few extra nights with us as we have so much to experience on site. With the COVID guidelines - we are still working on different ways to service our guests - dining, activities, menu, services, etc. - but we appreciate you mentioning this. Thank you for taking the time to share your visit with your review - our team enjoys reading these from our guests - we continually learn from what our guests say what works and what doesn't. We look forward to your return and we hope to be able to share all of the other amenities that Primland has to offer. Please be safe, Julee

Primland has a gorgeous lodge with a beautiful setting and I am truly excited to see what happens with the property over the next several years. The lodge is intimate, and a great option during COVID times given the size. They also seemed to be taking every precaution for both guests and their staff which was nice to see. The staff across the board all seemed very happy and that came through in their greetings, excitement to share details about the property and history and general demeanor. By far, the coolest thing about Primland is the observatory. We had a lovely tour of it, but unfortunately had too much cloud cover during our stay to be able to use the telescope. That feature alone will likely bring me back. The golf course was also in fantastic condition, though we did not play as we were there with two toddlers. While Primland does have a lot of activities for kids, they are heavily geared towards older children, and I wouldn't recommend going with kids under the age of 6 or 7 when there are so many resorts of the same caliber who really cater to families of all ages. The entire staff was very welcoming and we had a nice time with hikes, the amazing pool and the game room, but it would have been nice to be able to do even a led horse ride. We were able to get the kids spa mani/pedis which was nice and they enjoyed. The spa was great with them and has a nice little relaxation area. The suite we were in was very spacious, and very nicely appointed. The beds are HEAVEN. We had a huge tub, separate shower and a very large living area with a pull out sofa, indoor dining area and outdoor dining area. The automatic blackout shades were fantastic and really elevated the overall experience of the room. There were two dying dying plants in our room - greenery in a large floor pot and an orchid that was yellowing which really brought down the room. It was very clean, and would have been better off without those. The lobby and public spaces had very fresh, lovely flowers, so they can be done away with in the rooms if the rooms aren't conducive to keeping them alive. Our favorite dinner was at Stables Saloon with live music, and an amazing view from the outside. The views from all over the property are stunning, especially at sunset. But every meal was excellent across the board. The menu is varied and every dish we tried was fantastic and fresh. Room service was both quick and reasonable which we appreciated as we never had to call down to see where it was. They beat the estimated time each time we ordered. We would return, likely as a couple/romantic trip or wait until our kids are older.

I am so happy to hear that your Primland experience was an enjoyable one for all of the family. It sounds as if you were able to do a lot and we appreciate the feedback. We use these reviews as a tool in learning what is working for the resort and our guests and what is not. Your feedback is valuable. We have recently added the age limit to some of our activities so it has eliminated some of them for the younger set of children. Due to this - we are currently in the process of adding more programs to the younger children - ie Meet the Horses with a Ring Ride, pond fishing, etc. We also added the Fairy Door Hiking Trail last year and are adding on to this. It was good to hear your comments as it verified that these are programs we need to add. We hope to have them in place the next time you visit - when you come back to do the Deep Space Star Gazing in the Observatory (so sorry the weather didnt allow this during your visit - it is amazing and well worth a return visit.). I will share your comments with all of our departments so they can not only read the wonderful comments you shared but also address the areas were we need to improve or fix. Again, thank you so very much and we look forward to welcoming you all back to the Blue Ridge Mountains. Best, Julee

My wife and I have traveled extensively in this country as well as abroad so our expectations of a five star property like Primland were quite high for a two night getaway. The reality of what we experienced, however, was for the most part noticeably disappointing.
The good involves the property itself, the colors and design details of the lodge and our room as well as our waitress (Erica) in the upscale dining room and fairway pub where she waited on us three times in two and a half days.
The bad started with the four and a half mile drive over twisty mountain roads from the front gate to the lodge. Once inside we found the pool and games room closed for maintenance, the internet service in our room spotty at best, tepid water in the shower, tub and dual sinks, no electrical outlets in the bathroom nor near the desk in the room off the bedroom. Cups and napkins were missing for afternoon tea on the second day of our stay in the great room off the lobby. Bathroom tissue was practically empty with no refills in the room when we arrived. Service from the kitchen in the lodge was slow throughout our time on the property.
Finally, the ugly involved an unpleasant odor in one of the elevator cabs over the course of our stay. In defense of our hosts we were offered another room to combat our internet problems (each room has its own router). We declined rather than packing and unpacking a second time. Upon arriving home I intended to fill out an online survey provided by the lodge but found the site to be inaccessible for input.
Given the prices charged for lodging and meals I would have expected so much more from the facility. A 50% reduction in cost would not be out of order for what we experienced.
I know we could have contacted the property manager and created an unpleasant
scene but that would have in my own mind completely destroyed any good feelings we enjoyed while on the premises. Somehow letting others know what we experienced seemed a more appropriate response.

Thank you for letting us know about what you had experienced during your visit with us. This by no means is our standard and I am so sorry you experienced any of this. I have shared your comments with our management team - we appreciate all feedback, good and bad, as it is how we know when something is or is not working so we can address the situations. I am sure you will hear back from them if you have not already. (if you would like to share your email with me, I will be happy to have someone reach out to you personally - jmidden@primland.com) Most enjoy the drive up the mountain to the Lodge as it showcases the stunning views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and valleys surrounding our 12,000 acres - but for some, it can be a bit of a surprise if its their first time visiting the resort. The first part of the year, when it is a bit quieter at the resort after the holidays, we try and do some of the maintenance and repairs to the resort - our apologies that your visit coincided with the Game Room and the pool. It is our responsibility to let our guests know if any of this is occurring during their visit when they call to book with us - again, we are sorry that you were not aware. We do hope that we will have the chance to share Primland with you again in the future and you can have the true Primland experience - one that many enjoy and we love sharing with our guests. Again, we appreciate your time in sharing this with us and hopefully look forward to your return. Happy New Year, Julee

Good: fairway cottage (east) was good for the two of us. Large bathroom, tub shower head didn't work. Hikes were had great views. Dinner at element was worth every penny (gnocchi & duck).
Fair: the phone didn't work in cabin, our cell phone reception wasnt good in cabin. We couldn't order room service so had to walk to lodge for every meal. The pub food was sub power for cost of pub food. Need more choices since there are only two places to dine during the weekday. Golf was cancelled both days due to weather. However, not once did we see anyone on the course with a lawn mower getting the last little bit of frost off the greens when everything else was clear. Sadly no hot hubs was open in spa. Need to have individual hot tubs for each cabin if canceling the spa is going to continue. At checkout was double charged for breakfast. Even though this was known the front desk still ran credit card. Had to then go back and get charge taken off cc.
For $600/ night there should be an option to order room service from ipad, not just have menu. Shower head in tub shower be checked before check-in. Have reduceded prices if things are closed. Have a mini bar included.
Have no desire to stay again.

Thank you for taking the time to share with us your experiences. With the newly re -instated Virginia restrictions, unfortunately we are limited on what we can offer for spa services, the hot tub in the pool being one of them. We do have mountain homes with individual hot tubs so there is that option if that is a wish for your visit. The ipads are a new addition to the guest rooms and we are now in the process of integrating them with our internal system so food orders may be placed. With the winter season, our dining options are limited to the 19th Pub and elements due to seating limitations - in the warmer months we were able to have more dining options outside. Same with the golf course - the course is actually closed but we have guests that can play complimentary if the weather allows - during the winter months we do limited golf maintenance. So happy to hear you enjoyed the hikes and views - Primland has plenty to share on its 12,000 acres. We do hope that you will decide to return to the mountain 9n the new year - we would love to welcome you back. Happy New Year.

My husband and I enjoyed a two night getaway to Primland. We stayed in the Golden Eagle treehouse which had stunning views and the treehouse itself was roomy and comfortable. The staff was friendly and so very helpful. The service overall was one of the best that I have ever experienced. However, our culinary experience here was terrible. We ate at the Element for dinner the first night and even though the service was superb the food was bland. My husband ordered the rib-eye medium rare and he got an over cooked, tough, chewy piece of meat. The second night, we ate at the Stable Saloon which had enjoyable live music but here again the food was not of quality to justify $40 a person. It was definitely not fresh and tasted like the food had been sitting out for a long time. The staff apologized multiple times and took care of us. Overall, we would definitely come back because of the beauty of the place and the service. However, we will probably opt to stay in accommodations that have a full kitchen unless we hear that they have hired a true culinary chef.

Thank you for taking the time to share your comments of your visit with us. Staying in the treehouse is a unique experience - the views are hard to describe. you feel as if you are on top of the world. We were pleased to also hear that our team took wonderful care of you during your stay. We are sincerely sorry that your dining did not live up to the rest of your experience with us - I have shared your comments with our F&B Director and culinary team. We appreciate when our guests take the time to let us know "what worked and what didn't" as we use these comments as tools to improve and build our products, service and team. We do hope that you will come and visit us again and give our dining another try. We are in the process of restructuring our culinary program and again, we feel horrible that you were not able to have the true culinary experience that is our standard. When you do rebook to come, please let me know at jmidden@primland.com and I would be happy to treat you to an evening of dining so you can truly see what our culinary team can do. I am not sure what happened during your visit with us but I know that the culinary team here will take your comments seriously and will appreciate the feedback. Thank you again for your time and we look forward to return to the mountain. Julee

The pristine and spectacular wooded mountain setting are unmatched but the resort is a mix of excellent to falls short of what it could be.
The resort lodge is a lovely modern rustic design that takes advantage of beautiful views of mount top scenery. The accommodation options are varied w individual cabin style homes to hotel type rooms in the lodge and “Tree house “ buildings.
We stayed in one of the property cabin style homes. Great views and secluded setting but only adequately maintained w/ a poorly stocked kitchen.
Set in rural Virginia, its asset is its natural and rustic setting w abundant wildlife (wild turkey, deer and birds abound). It is a true sportsman’s paradise for fishing and hunting. The recreational facilities include well appointed tennis, horse stables, archery and shooting (with expert instruction available for novices). A wide variety of hiking trails and an exercise course are enjoyable. The mountain top golf course is both beautiful and memorable, with lovely locker rooms and practice range facilities. The high mountain setting is very hilly w many hokes having a blind shot and uneven, steep lies;.even with a good shot you can be in trouble ion this course. Carts have GPS but not as good as local knowledge.
We had a half day of guided fly fishing that was amazing for the setting and guided instruction. Whether u r a rookie or expert... ask for BJ. There is also a recreational observatory for star gazing at night (not complimentary) that is ok for low power night sky viewing on clear nights.
Now for the bad news.. the resort food ranged from good in the cafe bar (great trout and chicken), to ‘send it back’ terrible in their signature restaurant. The wine list is odd and overly price, the wait staff were friendly and effusive but the menu is trying too hard and poorly executed... AVOID it!
The resort is clearly disrupted due to CIVID operations but for all the natural beauty and amenities the hotel service and restaurant fall short.

Love that you experienced so many of our activities - our 12,000 acres of wide open spaces makes quarantining with us fun and safe! We have had to make many adjustments to follow the guidelines and protocols of COVID 19 and still attempt to maintain our Primland standards. Its a new world and we learn as we go....that is why we appreciate you taking the time to send us your comments. Guests' reviews are a great tool in the training of our team. I have specifically shared your information with our F&B Director and the culinary team. I know they will be disappointed that you did not enjoy all of your dining experiences. For fly fishing - BJ is our go-to guy!!! So happy he was your guide for your visit. We do hope that you will return and enjoy more what we have to offer. As the COVID guidelines change - our protocols and limitations will as well - it is ever changing nowadays! Again, thank you and please be safe. Julee

We had planned to travel abroad for my husband's birthday this year but with international travel being so problematic at present, we decided to stay closer to home. We had been to Primland 3 years ago and really enjoyed our stay so we decided to return. We booked before the acquisition (and accompanying SIGNIFICANT price increase) by Auberge Resorts. At the price paid, we feel that a stay is a good value. The service is excellent. The entire staff is very friendly and very accommodating. The food is all very good if a bit pricey. Potential guests should be aware that, other than packing some groceries, there is no real alternative. The gate of the resort is a 20 minute drive from the lodge and once there, you are about 30 minutes from even the most basic food/retail area. The on site activities are all fun and well presented. All of the guides know the resort very well and seem to truly enjoy sharing it with guests. They are mostly very down to earth, local folks and very enjoyable to be around. On our first visit, our son was 8 and some of the activities required he be 9 or 10. This year, he was 11 and, unfortunately, the age for some activities (namely RTVs) had been raised so that he was unable to participate. He was, fortunately, still eligible for the children's activities and he really enjoyed the airsoft shooting and archery. Older kids and adults will have a really great time. My older son particularly enjoys the trap shooting and said that Primland has very nice Beretta loaner guns. He brought his own but ended up using theirs instead (and bonus, they handle the post shooting cleaning!) The whole family enjoyed the hiking trails. They are well kept and offer beautiful views. We chose the moderate trails and they provided lots of elevation changes for some strength and cardio work, but very doable by all ages. My husband and I enjoyed our spa treatments (book well in advance, they were completely bookedl on our first visit). The spa is clean and well appointed and the staff and treatments are wonderful. The rooms, while still nice, are a bit tired and could use some updating. A small complaint that was fully addressed was that there is only Coffee Mate in the room. Pretty unexpected at this level of accommodation. The staff, however, took great care of us every evening and provided a cup of half and half from the restaurant for our morning cups. If you don't care about having coffee in your room, they do provide a coffee service, with half and half, in the lobby each morning. The thing we love most about Primland is the low total capacity of the resort. We don't enjoy crowds or queues (pandemic or no) and I have heard that capacity may be increased. With higher pricing and higher capacity, I am sure the resort would be more profitable, but we would hesitate to return, and I hate that. I anxiously await the changes Auberge makes and I hope they are all positive.

We stayed in one of the homes rented by Primland and it was horrendous. The home must not be maintained by the resort as small trees were growing from the gutters. The furniture was extremely worn and had better days back in the 90's. The dishwasher was new, cheap and not fitted to the space for a dishwasher. The lower level bathroom had a large burn mark on the very old linoleum and the lower level bedroom had a huge stain on the carpet. The bed linens were clean however the dust ruffle looked as though it got caught in the dryer or vacuum as it was ripped. The whirlpool tub that is advertised is a 80's style tub and did not appear to be maintained. We also had issues with a generator that ran 24/7 outside by the deck and was very loud. Hard to enjoy the beautiful scenic overview with a loud generator running constantly.
Dinner at the Resort - oh so sad! ... our server was extremely friendly and very honest about the menu. I orginally ordered the pasta but was told by our server not to order that and as she described, "it takes like Spagetti O's". My husband, me and one of our guests order the duck and it was very underwhelming. Our other guest order the ribeye which again was underwhelming and he mentioned that he has had better. Our server indicated that they were having issues in the kitchen and offered us a free desert to share. It was an ice cream dish which typically has a chocolate shell but they did not have the shell and the dish came to the table semi-melted. We opted for the 19th Pub the next evening. Our guests ordered burgers which were good, my husband ordered the Branzino and he said it was excellent. I ordered the flatiron steak medium rare and it came to the table well done.
The golf course was beautiful, however maintenance was being done on the course.
When we checked out we told the front desk about these issues. The response was a simple, "I will let upper management know". I did receive a call from a manager and explained each issue and he mentioned that the homes are privately owned which would have been nice to know before we booked.
We will not return to this subpar resort.

Thank you for taking the time to share the experience you had with us at Primland. Please know that this is not our standard and we are so sorry for your disappointment. We always appreciate our guests sharing their experiences - good and bad - as it is how we know what is working and what isn't and its a great tool for training and improving. We have shared your comments with the various departments. Our mountain homes are not part of our luxury accommodations and we do know that they have some improvements that are needed - we have them on a rotating maintenance program to upgrade them, but this has been delayed with the new circumstances. During this time they are quite popular as they are fully equipped, have amazing views and with the social distancing, families or groups can stay in them and still be within the guidelines - they have been booking consistently since we have reopened and we have been unable to get in and do the improvements. However, this is still not an excuse for what you experienced. From your comments, we have sent our team to the house and they have checked and repaired the generator and took note of the other areas mentioned. Your interaction with some of our team members is not our normal and again, we have sent this to the different departments to address the experiences you had with them. The majority of the time, our team members and their genuine southern hospitality is normally what guests compliment us on. We have done the same with your dining experiences and sent this review to our Chef and F&B Team. Again, we appreciate the time you took to let us know about your experience - it is not always easy to hear this, but then again, if people such as yourself do not let us know, then we do not have the opportunity to rectify the situations or fix the problems. We do hope that you will reconsider and come visit us again and let us show you how we really do southern hospitality here in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Please be safe, Julee Midden, Director of Sales and Marketing

We (my wife and me) celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary at Primland. We had originally planned a trip to Europe but travel restrictions due to Covid19 had us scrambling for a backup plan.
We had a fabulous trip and loved the resort. Primland did an excellent job of taking this pandemic seriously and we felt very safe during our stay. The staff was fantastic. I want to give a special shout out to Carson for helping us get settled in and for always being there when we had questions. One big negative about our stay was we must have arrived during a staff shift change because on the drive in from the South gate we were almost hit several times but cars leaving the resort that were driving way too fast for the winding road.
We both got massages and the Spa was very good. Staff was great and facilities were good (not great).
We also played golf and the course is very nice with fantastic views. Too expensive in my opinion compared to other top notch courses I've played (Pebble, Spyglass, Grandfather, etc). But certainly worth playing once. Not sure I'd pay that much to play there again.
The food is way too expensive which we knew going in so we brought quite a bit of our own and ate on our balcony often. We did get the burger from the 19th Hole Pub and it was okay.
Our room (Lodge room 2) was good with ample room and nice design. However it was banged up a bit in places. Tile in shower was missing a few places and the dining area table was stained with something. We reported this to Carson and he had the table replaced immediately.
So overall we were pleased Primland. Staff was great (except for those speeding drivers). Facilities were very good to good. I would recommend but if we go again I would stay in Fairway Cottages or Pinnacle Houses and bring all my own food/drink.

Thank you for taking the time to provide valuable feedback to our team! I would like to apologize on behalf of the resort for our staff's unacceptable driving behavior. I understand when getting off work some of us can't wait to get home to relax, but this is not acceptable and we will be sure to address this immediately. The safety of our guests, staff, and wildlife is most important to us and we strive to maintain such safety at all times. If your looking to lodge elsewhere on property, I highly recommend the Pinnacle Cottages, both Dan River Suites and Cedar Bluff Rooms are exceptional. Kind Regards,

Thank you. Our pool is located on the lower level of the hotel in the Spa. It does have doors that open up to the outside to a patio, lawn area and fire pit area. It is in our future to add an outdoor pool, however, with the current situation, that plan has been delayed! :)
We do hope to see you soon on the mountain! Julee

Are you referencing the Pinnacle Cottages or Fairway Cottages? If the Pinnacles, then the main door opens into a small foyer and then to the outside. If it is the Fairways, then yes, the open directly out to the front porch or patio. Julee
Yes, they are a full-size pull out bed.
