Enjoy a romantic setting and warm country hospitality in our unique bed and breakfast, a circa 1853 Victorian Carpenter Gothic Inn situated in the small Virginia railroad town of Goshen. Created for couples, our five guestrooms and private cabin on Mill Creek have a rich blend of old and new interior with fine art, comfortable seating, luxurious linens and bath robes, all with private baths. Each provides a sanctuary of romantic relaxation to reconnect and refresh. With three living areas, spacious dining room offering a 24/7 complimentary coffee & tea bar, over 2200 square feet of verandas including the gazebo on Mill Creek, and more than an acre of gardens, there is space enough to be social or private as you wish. The big beautiful George Washington National Forest surrounds us. We are 4 doors from the Appalachian Waters Scenic Route 39 Byway and 5 minutes to Goshen Pass (Virginia’s oldest state managed natural area) with activities from nature walks to invigorating hikes, fishing, kayaking and swimming, all in a spectacular rocky mountain gorge. Scenic drives abound in all directions from the Hummingbird taking you to hiking, horseback riding, farm tours, wineries, breweries, antiquing and the cultural offerings of Lexington, Staunton, Clifton Forge, Warm Springs and Hot Springs, then come home to your private retreat or great place to be with family and friends. Breakfast every day at the Hummingbird is Sunday Brunch, with special diets happily accommodated. Come enjoy the Shenandoah Valley and see why our guests return again and again.

Detailed Reviews
We stayed in the Serenity Cabin, a new self-contained unit separate from the original house with a kitchen and a lovely covered verandah overlooking the creek. Our cabin and the house were immaculate and nicely furnished with plenty of room for the two of us. The bathroom was spotless, the shower had good pressure, and the towels first class. It rained much of the time we were there but the heating was excellent and one of the highlights was sitting reading on the verandah. Sandra, the innkeeper, is very friendly but also left us to do what we wanted. The breakfasts are as good as any we have had at expensive hotels. This is one of the best run B&Bs we have stayed at. Make sure to ask for the history tour of the inn - a fascinating building. The surrounding area is beautiful. We went hiking a few times and can recommend both the Laurel Run trail (make sure to go to the right one in Goshen Pass; we initially went to another trail with the same name that hadn't been used in years) and the Dan Ingalls trail towards Warm Springs. Plenty to do in Lexington and other nearby places. Be sure to figure out in advance what to do about dinner. There is an inexpensive restaurant 200 yards away, but the food is pretty basic, also a convenience store that sells food. Much better restaurants in Lexington and Warm Springs. Or you could cook in the cabin. Would definitely stay here again.

We stayed at the Hummingbird Inn at the start of a ten day trip across Virginia, and have to say the best place we stayed the entire trip was the Hummingbird Inn. The room (where Eleanor Roosevelt stayed) was so comfortable and inviting, as was the entire inn. We loved having a fire in the evenings, and the breakfast was beyond compare - best scrambled eggs ever! Not only did Sandra make us last minute dinner reservations, she also found the one person in the entire county who could help us find the long lost family cemetery we were searching for! Thank you so much again for a truly wonderful start to our vacation -

My husband and I decided to take a brief weekend long Babymoon at The Hummingbird Inn after reading about their package for expectant moms and dads to be. It was fantastic! Sandra was friendly, hospitable, and quite knowledgeable about the history of the area. Jeff made delicious two course breakfasts. Our package included 2 nights in the Alleghany guest room + breakfast, a massage for both my husband and I, tickets for a horse and carriage tour of Lexington, milk and cookies for our second night, $50 towards a romantic dinner at the restaurant of our choice, and a thoughtful present for baby. We were also welcomed with fresh flowers, red wine for my husband, sparkling cider for me, and chocolate dipped strawberries on our first night. The inn was neat and tidy and offered several relaxing areas to pass the time. I did some light reading in the gazebo which is situated right in front of a beautiful creek. It was quite peaceful. There is also a wraparound veranda on the second floor where guests can sit and chat, read, or simply enjoy being outdoors. This was our first time at a bed and breakfast… Sandra and Jeff you’ve set the bar very high for all other inns that we may visit in the future!

Our first time at a B&B and it was absolutely wonderful. We stayed in the Teter-Wood room on the main floor and felt right at home during our stay. My husband and I just wanted to get away and relax for a few days and this was definitely the place to do it. Sandra and Jeff were the perfect hosts. We very much enjoyed their company. Hearing stories of what Goshen use to be like and the stories behind the Hummingbird Inn were so intriguing. The grounds were very beautiful, especially the gazebo by the creek. We enjoyed out first morning there with a cup of coffee watching and listening to the creek flow by. Breakfast was served every morning at 9am and we had something different and delicious each morning. We hated to leave. We absolutely want to return!

My wife and I, joined by another couple, had an excellent visit at the inn. We had stayed there many years ago (2005!), and this was our first return since then.
The inn had undergone ownership changes since then, and we have made new friends with the awesome innkeepers. They went out of their way to make us feel at home!
We had a beautiful room, and the inn is incredible. We spent a lot of time in the den (love the wood burning fireplace) and just relaxing with our friends.
Our meals at the inn were beyond delicious, and they went out of their way to ensure any dietary needs were completely satisfied.
We are already planning our next visit!

Overall, our weekend getaway was wonderful and we would like to say thank you to excellent hosts Sandy and Jeff. They made us feel very welcome and offered to provide tips for things to do based on our interests. Breakfast was delicious and very filling. The whole Inn is very clean and our room was spotless. Our room was very cozy with nice views to a garden. We only wish the fireplace that was in our room was functional, it would add to the ambiance. It was cold in the evening so we turned on an electric heater that was in our room, but the heater was loud so we turned it off before we went to bed.

My wife and I travel up and down Virginia Interstate 81 a lot and the Hummingbird is the perfect halfway place to spend the night, or two, during our travels.
Or, sometimes we go for a weekend just to get away.
Sandra and Jeff are the consummate bed and breakfast hosts; the property is spectacular; the breakfasts tasty and imaginative; and the location near Lexington, Virginia, is very convenient.
Treat yourself.

My husband and I visited The Hummingbird Inn for a long weekend and booked the inn's babymoon package. We loved the room we stayed in, and I really appreciated the large jet tub. We went on hikes, but since at 7.5 months pregnant I was a little slower than normal, Sandra was able to suggest some challenging, but not super difficult routes for us to take. She also recommended some sights around town that I think we would not have included on our agenda without her recommendation and I was so glad that we did. We also enjoyed having dinner in the gazebo by the river one night. Sandra and her husband were a pleasure to chat with. The two really went out of their way to make us feel welcome and comfortable. And, the breakfasts were really excellent. I think probably better than most restaurants. The inn itself is beautiful, and hiking is fairly accessible with a car. As most have pointed out, it is near the train tracks and our room faced the train, but we were not bothered by it. We will definitely be back and really had a fantastic experience.

The wife and I spent a weekend in April 2021 and absolutely loved it. Sandra and Jeff go the extra mile to make every guest feel welcome and pampered. The breakfasts they put together are first rate. They put a lot of effort into maintaining the house and grounds and it shows. The house common areas are comfortable and inviting. The only "negative" I have to note is due to the location off the beaten path, think ahead about how you want to address dinner, as there is only 1 restaurant nearby. All in all, we had a wonderful stay and I definitely recommend the Hummingbird Inn !

Everything about the Hummingbird Inn was outstanding. From the moment we arrived Sandra greeted us and provided interesting details about the inn and its beautiful rooms. This inn has a great deal of history and the rooms have been preserved to reflect that with a decorative eye to detail and exquisite craftsmanship. The grounds are peaceful and there is plenty of outdoor space to relax in a garden setting. The room had extremely soft linens and anything you needed. Breakfast was delicious . Lots of little gestures like fresh cookies and candy dishes that made us feel welcome like we were visiting a friend. Definitely a excellent place to stay.
