Thousand Trails Chesapeake Bay offers a lively atmosphere that guests enjoy, with entertainment from bands and DJs, alongside a variety of activities. The park's cleanliness generally earns praise, though some guests have noted the need for better upkeep of bathrooms and pools, particularly on weekends.
The rooms are quiet and offer useful amenities like laundry facilities, although cleanliness in some rooms can be improved. The range of amenities, including pools and family activities, is appreciated for providing great value, and the service receives commendations for the staff's friendliness and helpfulness, despite a few hiccups in communication.

Detailed Reviews
We visited Chesapeake Bay Thousand Trails in July for the first time, having just joined Thousand Trails Camping in part to use this resort. We were NOT disappointed! The campground is in good shape and there is a strong mix of weekend warriors and seasonal visitors, with week long and permanent sites mixed in. The campground is clean, family oriented and energetic, with events each weekend day, present but not pushy rangers, an awesome ice cream shop, and a good cafe that does some cool specials during the week. The staff hosts bingo tournaments that engage both the adults and kids, there are glow foam parties for kids with scavenger hunts, there is an active Marina and boat launch, two pools, pickle ball, and if you are really adventurous, you can just sit outside your camper, cottage or tent and just watch the world go by. There are lots of wooded sites, plus cottages and tent sites with water and electric.
We came back the next month (August) for another weekend and we are having a great time! Our daughter loves the playground (something we can’t do in Virginia Beach because of Covid restrictions) and seeing the other kids. This was her first time and she loves this place! And I love the reduced cost when you are a Thousand Trails member, and they treat you like family.
Several standout employees: Sandy, the director of Entertainment services, and Stephen, the Bingo Master! Jim helped us with our membership and got us a great deal. And the Ice Cream scoops at the general Store? They want to KILL YOU WITH ICE CREAM! And it is great Hershey’s Ice Cream, and their idea of a single scoop is a double or triple anywhere else for like $3!
They made us feel welcome and wanted! We will come back often!
Come visit Chesapeake Bay TT in Gloucester, just a little ways from Colonial Williamsburg and Busch Gardens. You won’t be disappointed!

It was a relaxing place. Plenty of trees for the shade. Right on the river with a dock for boats, jet skis, kayaking, etc. it had a nice sized pool. The site was level and even in the heavy rain our location was well drained (corner c43). The family activities were nice as well, candy bar bingo, tie dye, and poker run. Their general store was lacking options, but that could be because some items are hard to come by right now with COVID, so it was nothing to complain about, and their ice cream cones from there were good! 😁 WE LOVED IT and would definitely go back!

The tent area could use gravel at water faucets. IT would help with mosquitos.
Some of the faucests leak. I would think this would help with the cost of water and would also help with mosquitos.
The up grade of flowers through out the park is nice. The upgrade of flags and painting in the putt putt area is also nice.
The signs that say out of order instead of plastic bags over electri post also looks better.
Hope they will get these sites fixed because the park could use those sites.
Staff for the most part are friendly. The young guy who took us to our site was very friendly. and a pleaure to work with.
Some people get special treatments and others do not. That makes you feel like you are not wanted the way others are. We have friends that camp there and the staff will stop at their site everytime they pass there. But, we can not even get them to wave when they go by use. I believe that little wave matters. It makes you feel like they care you are there.

We spent a nice two weeks at this campground. The staff did a great job of having activities for the kiddos coming into Halloween time. Some annual/permanent rigs could use a good wash and some sprucing up but overall a nicely maintained campground with an easy to maneuver layout. We stayed in B49 and had a nice campsite view during the week. Weekend campers from Fri-Sun would camp in the open area in front of us but no serious issues with noise or anything. We will definitely stay here again. Do note - as with most TT places it is in the middle of nowhere. The grocery store is about 10 miles away and a Virginia state run liquor store is even further than that. We did a lot of driving south of here to see Jamestown/Williamsburg/Yorktown but the day trips and the history are SOOO worth it. Just prepare for a lot of time in your vehicle if you want to explore.

The online check in is great. It was very stress free and convenient. Drove right to my sight without having to exit thentig and wait at a counter. Site was clean and well taken care of. This was my 2nd trip and I have 2 more weekends booked. The only negative was that the only sites with water were only 30 amp. The 50 amp sites have the water turned off during the winter. I filled up with water at a 30 amp site and moved to a 50 amp for my stay.

The campground itself is well cared for, sites are spacious and many are shaded and/or overlooking the river. Staff was helpful and pleasant. We had a perfect site overlooking the river. We stayed in October, so the pool was closed … but it would have definitely been warm enough for a swim, and the two pools looked well kept and inviting. We chose to go kayaking instead, and we weren’t disappointed. Yorktown and in Williamsburg were fairly close-by so we also spent some time sightseeing and biking there. All in all, a great trip and we’d definitely come back.

The resort is not being kept up like you would expect especially the cabins but over the first week the bathrooms at the pool were out of toilet paper for at least 2days before someone checked them which means they were not being cleaned or sanitized. I was not happy with the condition of the cabins I rented especially for what I was paying per night. I hope that the resort steps it up and does a better job with maintaining the property.

Don’t get me wrong, this is a beautiful park. They have pools, a game room, entertainment, and a place you could buy food. I wish that their food service would have been open during the entertainment. It would be nice to just have some snack food while you’re sitting out there for hours watching the band. The biggest complaint I have are the roads. There are potholes everywhere. I saw several vehicles get stuck because of the mud. For A campground this big they need to spend some money on gravel. My 20 amp plug kept popping but it was a holiday weekend so I wasn’t going to bother them. We stayed in E section there are no lights in that area and the bathroom has a lot to be desired. That bathroom really needs to be updated. The water was turned off for several hours during the day. And from 11 to 7 at night for one night. We did meet some annual campers in E section and they were so nice and helpful. This park could be doing much better for the amount of people they serve. This Could be a five star park if they take care of the bathroom, put lights on the roads and gravel the roads.

I have been coming to this park for many years and with a few exceptions has always been a great park and great experiences for my family. For some years now I have been disappointed with the neglect of the Pickleball courts . After getting a total overhaul some years ago it has been slowly deteriorating. Court surface covered in dirt and not cleaned. Other debris on the courts. Dividing net torn and lose. On either side of the courts the putput courts and pool look in great condition. Putput has been repainted several times I’ve the years with lots of improvements. But nothing for Pickleball. This latest trip I was happy to see a huge change. Courts clean. Dividing net sewn together. Unfortunately I discovered that players had done the work instead of the park. Unfortunate that the park would create a situation where the campers felt they had to take it into their own hands. What do we pay our money for then campers have to help maintain campground property? At least the courts look much better now. Unfortunately cleaning them has exposed that the paint is starting to come up. Wish I could give more stars but campers come here to have fun not do work maintaining the campground.

Still understaffed...you can cut the grass at your site, buy not any common areas or dog park area. The park is generally unkept! The last stay we had a week ago still had all kinds of branches and debris on the ground after a thunderstorm the week before and the pot hole on the main road in along with the gravel roads in the park were very bad. The park water had been off more than on the last several weeks, so be prepared with backup wayer.
Yes and any other water craft.
Yes but only for Thousand Trail members. I’m unsure of the price. I believe it’s only for those who have prepaid for their trip at the park.
I have never stayed in one but they are cozy and I have had friends stay in them and they were satisfied. Alcohol is permitted but you need to have it covered and drink responsibly. No glass containers around any pools.
There is a playground near the community centre. There is also a nice park about 10 min. away called Beaverdam Park with play area and nice walking trails. The whole campground is pretty kid friendly with a lot of room to play.
