We decided to take our family to Colonial Beach for a long weekend. Weather was beautiful, however, mornings had quite a dusting of frost. Can't help that no matter how much we try. Allow me to get on with my story. We have a disabled daughter and a "white" medical service dog. We stayed at River Edge Inn back in September and received a call from management pertaining that we would be charged a cleaning fee for my daughter's room since there was dog hair and it was not a pet friendly room. So, what do you do after spending 7 hours in a vehicle and you can't help getting pet hair on you. I was able to discuss this with management and the whole issue was dropped. Well, we returned this time and I noticed a $25 charge on my bank card from this motel. After calling them to see what it was for, I was informed that the $25 was for extensive cleaning of the room because of the white dog hair! I was told the maid had to vacuum twice and put the bed linens through 2 cycles of wash. Why have a pet friendly motel and the owner (woman) tries to get more out of you after already paying over $500 for two room during off season. I was also told that my dog barked too loud. He is trained to bark loud to get our attention when he hears something that my daughter may be going through. NEVER AGAIN will we stay here after gone there on numerous weekend getaways.😤

This hotel is a older hotel that has been remodeled. My husband and stayed two nights. Positives: on the”beach,” pool is big, friendly small town people, great breakfast (like for real-they even had pot stickers) close to everything. Negatives: hard bed and they were working on the sidewalk in front of the hotel. You can’t hear it but you can’t get to the beach either. The bed they could fix but the sidewalk thing will probably be done this week. Overall good place to stay and clean. Favorite thing: breakfast!

I had a reservation 8/24/19 and arrived to find there was smell in the room (121) which seemed musty and damp. Since we had dinner reservations we figured we would turn on the ac and head to dinner. We returned around 11pm the smell had improved a little but was not gone. I showered and went to bed. At around 12 I woke to a burning sensation on my arms, face legs which caused itching. I tried wiping off again and aloe lotion but nothing was helping. I tried to call the front desk but, did not get an answer. We finally packed up and left around 1245am. We live about 1:40 min away. We drove home and I immediately showered again and took Benadryl. It appears I had an allergic reaction to either the water or what the sheets were washed in. I do have an allergy to chlorine however have never had this reaction from staying at a hotel. I did request a refund however, the response I received from Betty, the General Manager, was that no refund would be issued and that she thought my reaction was from a food allergy (I don't think French fries, mozzarella sticks and salad are going to cause a burning/itching sensation). I will not be staying at this hotel again nor would I recommend it to any friends/family or state employees traveling in that area. I expected more from an establishment that charges $200.00 a night for weekends.

Response from REICB, Manager at River Edge Inn
Responded Aug 27, 2019
We are so very sorry you seemed to have had a reaction to something you had come into contact with while visiting Colonial Beach. I did a little research for the town and saw that the chlorine levels in the towns water is 4 ppm, which is considered safe in drinking water. I also did a little research on reactions to skin allergies and they take somewhere between 12 hours to 3 days to show up. So I am sorry to say, I do not believe you received this reaction from your stay at our hotel. In the 8 years that REI has been in business, no one has had any reactions to the linens or water or anything else in the rooms to make them break out in any way. You said you had entered the room around 11 p.m. after going out to eat then showered and went to bed, then woke around midnight to a burning sensation. You may have been in the bed 30 - 45 minutes, I would not think that you could have had a reaction within that time. With further research, food allergy symptoms usually develop within a few minutes to two hours after eating the offending food. I was only suggesting that it could have been a possibility. We are very sorry you did not get to enjoy your stay with us due to this reaction.

I was staying with a friend who booked at this motel. The room was immaculate and the attention to any details of our comfort was above and beyond. It was quiet, comfortable and the breakfast was perfect. For a small independent motel/Inn they planned a good selection that covered all the breakfast bases. The pool is nice and it’s right on the beach promenade. This is not Marriott or any of the other chains. It is Hospitality done right!
