The proprietor was friendly and accommodating. The room was clean. Because of COVID, the usual complimentary breakfast was unavailable, but we understood and was no problem to just get that elsewhere.
We first visited Chincoteague in 1991 and stayed at the Birchwood that time. We returned for the first time in 20 years and picked the Birchwood again, partially for nostalgia, partially for budgetary reasons. This is a basic mom & pop operation, but it's done so very efficiently. Bob, the innkeeper, was extremely helpful when we needed him, which fortunately was not often. They do offer a no-frills breakfast - cold cereal, juice, coffee and pastries purchased from the local grocery. The room was clean and smelled great. Two issues: 1. the wi-fi is pretty bad, so if you are traveling with a millennial, as we were, be prepared for some complaints in that area; and 2. they do not provide any hand lotion. For years, we've never bothered packing shampoo, conditioner, or lotion, depending on the hotel to provide that, as most do. The Birchwood does not provide any lotion, and for some reason, the housekeeper would constantly deliver two tubes of conditioner and no shampoo. Bob furnished us some at our request and said he'd speak to the housekeeper, who was new. The next day, two conditioners and no shampoo. Fortunately, Bob gave us enough that this was no longer an issue. Finally, the place is next door to the Carnival grounds, and the Carnival is supposed to close at 11:00 PM. The Friday night we stayed there, loud music was blasting from the grounds well past closing. I complained to Bob the next morning. He apologized on behalf of the firemen who were partying past closing time, said he'd take care of it, and the next night, all was quiet. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and will look at the Birchwood first for our next trip to Chincoteague.…
Bob is a great host, frequently taking a stroll around the property to chat with guests and in our case, update us on the hurricane evacuation status of the island. Our room was clean and the beds were comfortable. Bob is still in the process of updating the rooms and although we stayed in one of the older ones it was quite adequate, and did I say clean. We booked an efficiency so we could re-heat our restaurant leftovers that we always have on a trip. There was a range with oven, fridge, microwave and coffee pot. Would definitely stay here again.
Clean, quiet, affordable and next door to the carnival grounds where the ponies are corralled during Pony Penning. Staff is courteous and friendly. After several stays,(in different rooms) my family loves being lodged here!
We intentionally picked this place after reading most all GOOD TripAdvisor reviews. Bob is a wonderful host! Like many of reviews, we stayed in a queen size bed room: room is spacious, very clean and offered nice hot shower and simple breakfast. Big parking lot, off from busy downtown Chincoteague so is quite, short walking distance to the down. Good place for family with kids to stay.
