Fire alarm went off for two hours upon check in. Communication about it was horrible. Awful awful experience. We all had to be outside for houes to escape the blaring noise. Front desk handled it super poorly.

I attended the drag brunch at the Graduate Hotel and was very disappointed by the false advertisement and poorly planning that went into the event. From the start, nothing went very smoothly considering there was only one person to process credit cards to pay for the brunch food and drinks. The advertisement was bottomless food and mimosas and this was certainly not the case. We paid the extra $18 for bottomless mimosas and were told we should go to the bar before the show but that drinks would be brought to us during the show. The bar was extremely overwhelmed and unable to keep up with the demand, and ran out of bottles of champagne before the show even started. So, we were instead poured mimosas from the small bottles that usually go in a minibar with warm sparkling wine. The manager would not allow his staff to pour more than an ounce of sparkling for our mimosas, unless someone didn’t have the bottomless wristband and was paying in which case they were given a normal glass. We requested for our mimosas to be made the same way as those, or at least have less orange juice because the amount of sugar was causing head aches. The manager on staff (Sheldon) told the staff that if people complained to just cut them off. The attached picture were the full pours we were being provided (before taking a single sip) and we had to leave the show in order to get a drink instead of having them being brought out as promised. We heard bar staff asking if they should come around with a pitcher as promised and the manager told them they were not allowed to, despite being told that would be the case when we first entered. As you can see, this is CLEARLY not a mimosa that would ever be served to paying clients during a regular brunch service, and I feel very disappointed that the staff found this suitable to serve patrons for this event. We were told on multiple occasions they were running out of sparkling wine so this was all they were allowed to serve us. I left the event paying $55 for brunch and was given probably the equivalent of two mimosas that would be served during regular service. The food did not include and of the sides we should have had available (ie butter) and staff gave us an attitude asking for even the smallest things.  The advertising for this event was incredibly misleading and I am very disappointed that the Graduate took people’s money for this event and then showed such poor customer service. The team was clearly unprepared and this was not the service that was provided.

We had a wonderful experience at The Graduate. The staff was great, the rooms were clean and comfortable and it was a great location. The beds were quite firm, but still slept well. We would stay there again for sure.

Quirky hotel, with a college vibe. Frette linens and an all-digital valet system (shout out to Earl who took great care of us). Close to UVA and local restaurants. On site coffee counter was great, and rooftop bar staff was super accommodating for a late night wedding after party that went into the morning hours.

The property is dated - rooms don't have dressers. Only area reasonably updated was the bathroom. Highly promoted rooftop bar not even open during posted hours. Location is good if visiting family / friends at UVA.

I was mostly very pleased with the Graduate. The room was comfortable and had interesting and thoughtful decor, the toiletries were exceptional, and the service at the rooftop bar was wonderful. Drawbacks include a mix of surly and unprofessional front desk staff (I waited 5 minutes for the one attendant to finish her smoke break for me to check in) and what is a pretty dated building that has been dressed up as a retro boutique hotel…. But because the “bones” are old (doors, outlets, very loud air conditioning units) feels a bit awkward. Unlike other reviews, however, I found everything to be very clean and comfortable and would stay again - although more happily at a lower price point. In sum, makes for a quirky 3-star experience, but not quite upmarket.

My first issue related to check in. I showed at 1pm, understanding 3pm is the normal check in time. They noted they did have a room for me, but if I didn't want to wait until 3pm, it would be an extra $35. I've never run into that situation at any other hotel. Secondly, they do have a nice method for tipping the value which is via app from a QR code scan. As I don't always carry cash with me, I appreciated this - so I used my remaining cash on check out to tip housekeeping and thought I'd use te app with the valet. Upon doing so, I found the minimum amount for tipping was $5 AND there was a $1.50 (30%) convenience fee. They should post these conditions where they post the QR code. Also, the rooftop bar was closed both nights (Thursday and Friday) that I was there.

The only reason this hotel gets more than one star is the location. Of course it is well situated to the University of Virginia, and if that is your main reason to be in Charlottesville, it would be hard to pass up. Location is adjacent to the central grounds. Having said that, they milk this. Do not expect as a customer to be prioritized what so ever. We have put friends here on several occasions and booked as part of larger groups. There come often unexpected fees and higher rates. If you question it, you get referred to processes ad booking systems. The customer is completely lost, and you feel as if you are being milked for everything you can get. If UVA is not your purpose for visiting Charlottesville, there are better options in town and the area. The Graduate sadly is a poor value for money. Plus the rooms are dark and not so inviting. Do not recommend.

The hotel is so cute and the location to UVA is great. However, my room was super dusty and I had to ask the front desk for things that weren’t in the room and they never brought to me. The dinner was raw and undercooked. Everyone sent their meals back.
