Do not let the appearance of The English Inn in Charlottesville fool you. On the contrary, the English Inn offers a symbolic reflection on colonial America as it sits towards the heart of Charlottesville.
Sitting at the cusp of the Route 29 and Route 250 interchange, the lodge is in the perfect location. It is nestled away from the main thoroughfare which enables some peace and quiet. There is also a dedicated light that sits on the road to the hotel which offers that peace of mind for those that are traffic-conscious. There are more than a handful of eateries (Bodo's Bagels is immediately adjacent to the hotel) that are well within walking distance and two grocery stores (Asian and Latin American) located directly across Route 29 from the hotel. Less than a quarter mile drive in either direction, there are shopping centers (Barracks Road and Shoppes at the Stonefield) and even more eateries when leaving the hotel. Behind the hotel, there is a community garden as well as a robust and beautiful walking/running trail that is easily accessible. While not considered as downtown, getting there and to the University from the hotel is quite easy with the drive being less than a 10 minutes.
The hotel is great for families with children and is pet-friendly. The rooms were clean and well maintained with plenty of onsite amenities. The hotel offers hot coffee and water in the lobby, while serving a great breakfast spread in the mornings. The lobby itself has a beautiful common area that is coupled with a fireplace and cozy sitting spaces. There is a rather large indoor pool that is also very clean and well maintained; no more than 5 feet at the deepest end, you don't have to worry about the water being frigid and there is also a shelf that is decently stocked with drying towels. From a holistic perspective, the English Inn beats out a lot of the other hotels in the immediate area based on affordability, location, amenities, and comfort.
We were surprised and truly delighted with this find and would definitely stay here again when we visit C'ville in the future.

I had a late afternoon meeting, and checked availability at the last minute, since home was three hours away. This Inn had an available room and fair rates, and appeared to be different than the typical national chains. Check in was cordial and efficient, room was clean, well prepared and comfortable. Hot coffee in the morning, and free breakfast (buffet line that was individually served), looked good, but I just grabbed coffee. Well done!

This is our first visit to the English Inn and we found it pleasant. It was a very good value for the Charlottesville area especially with a hot breakfast that was included. Our king room was very comfortable with an adjoining sitting area with an additional TV, the room also had a full-size refrigerator! The hotel was pretty clean, but it is in need of some updates. There was a nasty stain on our carpet and I noticed there were many dogs in the hotel. I wondered whether the stain was from a dog??? My opinion is a dog should not be in a room with carpet, it should have vinyl flooring. We had an issue with our toilet and it was immediately taken care of. It appeared the hotel was it about 100% capacity as many people were there for a wedding so I’m not sure why they did not have housekeeping available on a busy Saturday.
Overall we had a good stay, not sure if I would stay there again because of the issue with them allowing pets.

The location is great! It is close to the interstate, shopping, and next door to one of the best bagel shops (Bodo's Bagels). The hotel is very old and dated, although it is going through renovations. My room was not one of the renovated room. It was spacious for a king suite. It had a full size refrigerator and counter space with a full size microwave. The room was, unfortunately, very dirty. There were "toothpaste" spots on the faucet hardware, bathroom mirror, and there were other spots and such on the furniture. The clean towels had residual hairs on them. Basically, the room was not wiped down at all. You can tell it wasn't vacuumed very well and the fridge and microwave was not wiped down either. Thankfully, I brought my own cleaning and sanitizing wipes. The bed was not comfortable, for it sunk/dipped toward the middle of the mattress - obviously old and should have been replaced regardless if the hotel/rooms were being renovated or not. Although they had a hot breakfast included, it was not very good. I don't know if it was because we happened upon a "bad" morning breakfast, but the gravy for the biscuits and gravy was very salty and tasted undercooked (floury). The eggs and bacon were "rubbery" and the fruit was not fresh (bananas had large, dark spots all over). If you're planning to use the indoor pool, I would be very cautious. The tiles around the pool are broken and unleveled, and the pool was not clean at all. The staff was very friendly, and if the rooms/hotel were cleaner, I would consider staying here again. I can always grab breakfast at Bodo's.

Our room was dirty! In addition, the smell of the chemicals used to clean both the hotel and the room were so overwhelming that it made our family sick. We went to the front desk and told the lady working there of the problems and asked for a refund. She refused saying that our rate was non-refundable. By this point, I was getting ready to throw up from the smell. We packed our things and left. As we walked out and handed our keys to the worker on duty, the lady at the front desk again reminded us that we we would not be given a refund.
Unfortunately, we had booked this room using our credit card points. When we called our credit card company to see if they could help, they had to call the hotel directly and ask for a refund on our behalf. The person they spoke with claimed that we did not notify of them of the problem. Obviously, this is either a known lie, or the lady working the front desk that night did not make a note that we left - thus leaving us no recourse to get a refund.
I would strongly recommend that you book a stay at a different hotel. I can forgive the smell and dirty room, but the lack of customer service pushes me over the edge. They may have kept our money, but I will make sure everyone knows about the conditions and our treatment so that others will not experience what we experienced.

I booked two refundable rooms here for a family wedding but had to change locations to be with other members of the wedding party. I am senior citizen who is always careful to book refundable rooms whenever I travel. I had booked one room through Expedia. I canceled that and my money was refunded. No problem. The other room for my niece and her children I booked directly through the English Inn. I called the inn and a nice woman on the desk found both the reservations and said, yes, the one through Expedia was canceled and she would cancel the one made directly with the hotel . I quizzed her about it to make sure both were canceled and she assured me it was all taken care of and I would not be charged. Two months later I found a charge for $247 on my credit card for the English Inn. I called and was put through to the assistant manager, named John. I was taken aback when he didn't want to help me. He said the room was nonrefundable, despite what the accommodating desk clerk had said. He also said that the Expedia reservation was nonrefundable and someone erred by giving me my money back. He maintained that I was lucky because I should have been out both amounts (a total of about $500). I tried to reach the manager, Joshua Gross, but no one would return my phone calls after that. I even sent them a certified letter and it was never answered. I've spent a year hoping they would make this right. My only comfort is knowing that if I had stayed there, it could have been as unpleasant as several reviewers say it is.

We booked a room here through Airbnb. Have always had good experiences with ABB. However, this was NOT that. The photos of the place online are not the same as the room we were given. We opened the door and the entryway and living room carpet was severely stained as was carpeting in the bedroom closet. The furniture arms were soiled and worn; the couch cushions were stained. There are NO windows in the main living area—only in the bedroom. The lamps that are in the living area had low wattage bulbs..and we immediately had to call over to request replacement of two bulbs which were burned out. I specifically needed a cooking area in order to help provide meals for my son and daughter in law—however, the stove top was so encrusted with dried ash that it was unpleasant. Silverware? ONE fork, two spoons, and five knives. What?? I specifically needed a place to do my work, which the description said was provided. However, the chair for the desk area was too low. I am a transcriptionist so I was typing with my arms above chest level. Difficult and wearisome. I called to ask it if it could be switched out and was told no—they knew this was an issue. All their chairs were like that. They told me to use pillows. The front desk staff ignored me when I stopped there to ask a question. The bathroom had no exhaust. Cleanliness left a lot to be desired but I will say the housekeeping staff was very cordial. The refrigerator was not useful for what I wanted and, in fact, was not even large enough to fill the space that was there for it. It was a tiny dorm size refrigerator. We were there for 9 days! I wanted to be able to cook for my son. I needed to do my work while I was there. None of that was possible due to the poor condition, lighting, and general overall icky feel of this place. Sadly, i would NOT recommend staying here. I felt like we were duped by the Airbnb listing. The only good thing I will say is the woman who was at the front desk when we checked in was very nice, attentive and efficient. She was not there any day after that.

Positives: Courteous check in
Negatives: Cold water, no hot water. The hotel check in staff did not disclose that the water needed to run at least 10 minutes before getting hot. It would have been disclosed upfront at check-in. What a wasting of water to run it for 10 minutes. This will not be acceptable in California, where water is so precious.
When the water came out, it was black ink-ish color. Should be a 2.5 star hotel, not 4 star hotel. Hair found on the sheet, but the hotel staff said "it's clean and hairs do stick to the bedding sheets" after looking at it. Also no blankets. The same hotel staff brought two blankets over, apologized but felt like giving us a lecture and making a speech rather than solving problems for us.
Would not recommend this hotel, especially there are many better options nearby.
The location is convenient though if you value location over cleanliness and service.

“The English Inn “ well if you want to feel like you want to stay at an English motorway cheap hotel ……this one’s for you!!!
I was there for a wedding October 19th-23 a lot of the wedding party we’re staying there. Looked ok on paper BUT a tired lobby with an arrangement of tired dusty fake flowers greets you with a front desk man who wondered if I was his long lost friend with the same name ? Greeted us I was in the annex with a charming courtyard but the room over looked the parking lot 🅿️ with a bright light on all the time ….. there were black out curtains BUT just them hooks for sheers no other drapes!! This was a suite it had some kind of kitchen and a sofa bed that I would not have let my dog get on it was SO grubby . Some one else commented it was a shame the space had no windows in a review I see well this would have looked on the only retiming factor the court yard .But no the only natural light was the window with no sheers. The place was clean enough but for a total price of $1038 for the four days it was a very expensive lesson in we’re not to stay. NOT ONE cleaning person came near the room even to check the garbage and towels and on checking out the gentleman oh YOU take it to the trash bin in the parking lot . The breakfast was not too bad and there was a pleasant older lady helping people properly the highlight of the staff. I know we’ve had Covid etc but there’s no excuse for charging $309 a night plus taxes for this kind of place. Also sadly people describe the lobby as charming and English which sadly is nothing like the UK . But I’ve tried to be honest with this place and I don’t usually write reviews but sadly I had to vent about the lack of value at this motel
I forgot to mention the half use lotions and potions made in China in the bathroom .
