Boar's Head Resort, nestled near a scenic lake and trails, is lauded for its idyllic location and cozy atmosphere, complete with charming fire pits and seasonal decor. Guests commend the cleanliness of the well-maintained rooms and grounds, as well as a variety of amenities, including a spa and recreational facilities. However, opinions are mixed regarding value and service, with some travelers citing overpriced experiences and inconsistent service. While the rooms offer comfort and views, there are mentions of dated decor and the need for updates.

Arrived after a long drive to a warm welcome from the valet which continued at the Front Desk. Very helpful and courteous assistance from the moment we arrived til departure. The room was beautifully decorated with tranquil view of the pond and property. Bathroom amenities were top of the line from toiletries and towels to make up mirror and bathrobes....exceedingly thought out even providing toothbrush and toothpaste should we have forgotten! The lobby and Mill Room Restaurant were still decorated from the holidays and simply gorgeous with understated elegance without being pretentious. The Boar's Head Resort is our new "must stop" when we are enroute to visit family in PA and Ohio <3

Great location for access to Monticello and University of Virginia , as well as hiking trails. Bed was very comfortable and I experienced excellent sleep quality. Covid19 guidelines did limit some services, but was ale to access the pool and restaurants with no issues. The Mill Room was very popular, so reservations are highly recommended, especially if you wish indoor seating. Every staff member was gracious and friendly. Since it does have access to golf and a large sports center for tennis, etc. parking can be a bit of an issue near the lake side. There was care taken to adhere to Covid19 guidelines with hand sanitizer stands everywhere . It is a large complex that can provide activities within the spacing guidelines, and maintain the energy of "almost normal" operations for guests, which was very nice and welcoming experience.

The front desk experience was pleasant and easy. The room was clean, typical. Nothing fancy. They knew the boiler for hot water had just been replaced that afternoon and they still put us in the room. It had NO HOT WATER. The cold water that did trickle out was dark brown, gritty and had an off odor.

Dinner that evening was delicious and fresh. Breakfast, however was not pleasant. The Mill Room dining room was filled with flies. We became so weary of swatting flies away from our plates that we left, not finishing our delicious breakfast. All we wanted to do was go home, have a hot shower and eat a meal without flies.

Dear Donniebergh1- I am sorry to hear that we missed the mark on both the hot water as well as your breakfast experience. The Hot Water temp was back up to temp by the evening and we did not have any other rooms of the same type booked to move guests to. We are deeply sorry that it affected your arrival and I know our front desk staff took steps to make up for the challenges. Again we are deeply sorry for missing the mark and we hope to have you back to visit us again in the future so we can show you that those challenges you faced are not our norm. All the best, Russ

My husband and I were looking forward to a weekend away to unwind from the hustle and bustle. When we arrived at the Boars Head, we were notified that an accident had occurred knocking out the electricity throughout the property. They apologized and gave us a breakfast voucher.

Due to this, nothing was open and we could stay in our room as it was getting dark. Lights finally came back on, but no cable for the remainder of the evening.

Many of our linens (sheet, towel and bathrobe) had stains on them. Due to Covid, there was no daily housekeeping service, which I understood before going, but believe they could’ve done a better job at providing services to you, without you having to call for everything.

Our stay, which was meant to be relaxing and restful, was not that. A breakfast, $5 oatmeal, does not rectify an entire night of not being able to enjoy the room you’re paying for. Disappointed in their response and the general cleanliness of the property/rooms.

Dear 409ashleyy- I am so sorry to hear how negatively our regional power outage affected your ability to enjoy the room, amenities, and the property. You are right that it was truly challenging for our team to try and operate for a full day without power and again I am so sorry for the shortcomings that you experienced as such. Those are not our standard and neither is a power outage. We will take your feedback and reflect so that if it does happen again we can be better prepared to meet/exceed our guests expectations. Thank you for the feedback and we do hope that maybe we will get the chance to show you how wonderful our property is at another date. Best regards, Russ

When we arrived Friday at 5 pm for an anniversary weekend getaway, we were told by the parking attendant that there was a power outage, a huge line to check in, and maybe we should come back later. We had our dog with us so leaving to go elsewhere (not sure where he wanted us to go?) while it was getting dark was not the best idea. We parked and called the hotel and ended up getting connected to someone working from home who tried to be helpful to check us in remotely, but couldn't. She had us call the front desk and the wonderful Geraldine got us checked in remotely. She gave us breakfast vouchers for the next morning. She was great.

By this time it was dark and we found our way to our room by flashlight. We decided to head to our dinner reservation (off-property) an hour early since there was nothing else to do in the dark, and as we were changing, the power returned. We learned it had been out since the morning; a heads up message to incoming guests might have been helpful. And better training for the parking dude who was turning people away??

The TV and tablet in the room didn't work. The TV started working Saturday, the tablet never did. Room service breakfast was delivered in takeout containers which I understand due to COVID, but our food was cold, there were no refills for coffee, it was very utilitarian and underwhelming.

We ultimately had a really nice time, the grounds are beautiful, the trails are great, and our room was lovely. But I would have expected more than a not-great free breakfast and waiver of $20 resort fee for the inconveniences we experienced, especially as we paid a lot of money for the stay and had indicated it was our anniversary.

Dear SpannyS- I am so sorry to hear about the impacts that our regional outage had on your arrival and experience. It was certainly not expected to be down that long (from Dominion Power) so we certainly could have prepared better had we known. Hindsight is always 20/20 but we learned and I promise you that we are better and will be better next time as a result. Thank you for your feedback and we do hope to get the opportunity to have you back again in the future. Warmest Regards, Russ

Just checked in and we were placed in a queen size room advertised as a "Resort King". I called the front desk just to make sure we were not accidentally placed in a queen room and I was told we are in a King room with a king bed... I own a king bed, this is not a King size bed... My wife is 5"3' and her feet hit the end of the bed. The reason we booked here vs. UVA at Darden where our conference is being held is because they only had queen beds and they were at the same price as Boar's Head. Bed size isn't really a big deal, but why am I getting a queen bed at a King's price.

Dear Joshuahusak- Thank you for recently staying with us. I am very sorry to hear that you may have had some challenges with our bed size but I respectfully disagree with your post about false advertising. I personally went to the room you stayed in, 307, and checked the tags and measured it. Our King mattresses are classified by Simmons as Hotel Kings and measure in at 72" wide x 80" long. A Queen Mattress is 60" wide by 80" long. Our beds are a full foot wider than a queen. You may very well be comparing our beds against a California King which has a length of 84" but niether should have been a problem for someone measuring in at 63" tall. Again I am deeply sorry if for some reason that impacted your stay but we certainly do not falsely advertise our bed sizes or anything about our property as we hold ourselves and the integrity of our team and property to a much higher standard. Should you desire to discuss further please feel free to contact me directly. Warmest Regards and future travels, Russ

Boar's Head Inn is a charming facility, peaceful and elegant. It captures the vibe of a classy retreat in the Piedmont. The tennis center is phenomenal: spacious, very good hardcourt playing surface.

But for reason's that escape me, they refuse to upgrade the air handling units in the rooms They invested in a Chromecast media system, but the AC units are old, ugly, and noisy.
You know that feeling when you're woken up by the sputtering old tractor noise in the middle of your comfy room?
Over and over again, all night long... It ruins everything.
Hey, 1986 called: it's Upgrayedd time.

Dear Radu S, Thank you so much for your very positive comments about our resort and all the wonderful amenities we have to offer but at the same time I am deeply sorry that the HVAC in your room really put a damper on your experience. Our HVAC units were actually replaced just 5 years ago with brand new units by Trane. Unfortunately they don't look new or are not modernly hidden because of the infrastructure of our historic buildings and having to continue to use that. I will however look further into your room specifically and see if we can have our maintenance team make adjustments. Thank you again for staying with us and we hope to have you back for some more tennis again soon.

Overall satisfaction with resort. Covid changes some service but didn't seem to interfere with stay. The lake view room upgrade was well worth it. I enjoyed the back patio and quiet of the area. Great water pressure with shower and adjustable showerhead. The convenience of the small frig was most appreciated. Two chairs with ottomans helped for relaxation and not watching tv in bed. Room service was prompt for replacement of towels or additional coffee supplies. I had no difficulties with appointments for the closeby sports club and Birdwood Golf Course. Wandering through the building was annoying for use of the resort pool.but only a matter of convenience. Petty issues with position of shower bath get and shampoo and position of toilet too close to shower. Not having academic and business conferences made for a quiet retreat from the world and enjoyable stay. Great choice for vacation to home of Presidents, UVA and Skyline Drive.

This was our first trip to Boar's Head, as I had planned a special surprise getaway for my husband for his birthday - but also a belated anniversary trip for us, since we could not go anywhere to celebrate in December because we both had Covid. Denise, at the front desk, was absolutely wonderful and SO very personable and friendly! She made us feel like a king & queen and went well above and beyond to make our first trip a very memorable one. We were upgraded to a big suite with a sitting room, bathroom, and a bedroom.

Our suite was very cozy with a gas fireplace, a refrigerator, and a few other amenities. Our bathroom was HUGE and had 2 showers in it, which one had a bathtub with it, in case one of us wanted to soak for a little. The shampoo, conditioner, and body wash they offered smelled great and made my hair feel amazing!! The walls were very sturdy and sound proof, as we didn't hear anyone else around us the entire time we were there, but we knew that there were people staying next door - because we saw them. The bed was cozy and plush and I love that the closet was stocked with extra pillows, a fan, and even robes & slippers for us to wear at our leisure. Our only complaint is that the couch in the sitting room had some stains on the cushions and there was a little black mold/mildew build up, under the pump bottles of the shampoo, conditioner, & body wash in the shower.

We also enjoyed a couple's massage at the spa & the Winter Wander walk through, though it was absolutely FREEZING the night that we walked it. Our massage was absolutely divine and ended up making me fall asleep - which I NEVER fall asleep during a massage! Everyone was so friendly and helpful in the spa and we are finding that we really can't wait to go back to stay & get another massage!! The little market at the end of the Winter Wander walk was nice and included hot chocolate, among other little treats you could purchase and products/goods that were available for sale.

Overall, it was a great first experience and I would highly recommend going to Boar's Head! I know we can't wait to go back!!

Booked boat’s head for my 50th birthday with family joining us. My plans were for my daughter and I to enjoy the spa but alas, it was on fire in December and has not reopened. Perhaps related, the inn called a few weeks ago to tell me my original room was in a section that may not have hot water so I was upgraded to a suite (which I was charged for). The suite seemed really nice until my husband stated yelling “what the hell is in the toilet?”. Appeared to be some sort of leafy detritus. This was coupled with black ashes and a broken, almost certain, crack pipe in the shower. Very odd. There were a few other inconsistencies (stem part of the door handle missing in bedroom closet, holes drilled close to the ceiling -see picture- some kind of plug left on the living room floor) that made me wonder if this room was mid-renovation??? Regardless, the beds were really comfortable and the fireplace was lovely.

You can use the exercise equipment as you wish. It’s a beautiful set up. Besides the golf and tennis, there are also extensive paved and unpaved trails for great walks or runs. I actually saw a cute fox on a dawn walk. They’re for guests only, so they aren’t packed with people.
