Because of the age of these venerable buildings there are features which are not up to 'modern standards', but anyone with an appreciation of history and nature will be glad to overlook these to stay in such a lovely location. Friendly, helpful staff. We would be happy to return.

This is a great and reasonable place to visit reguardless if it is a stop on the way or a two or three layover/destination. There are wonderful trails and vistas to hile or stroll upon. The food at the site is great and reasonablly priced. A recent re-modeling made the whole

Peaks of Otter Lodge is one of our favorite places to stay in Virginia. You will love the scenic view from your room as the sun is glistening off the water in the morning and evening. No TV's in the room,so you focus on each other unless you go to the bar for TV watching. THe

We stayed for one night in room 206 in February. The room looked exactly like the pictures on their website. The king size bed is hard, but the pillows were wonderful and soft and large. Their is a large window with a view of the lake. Being on the first floor makes it

We've had our family reunion for years at Peaks of Otter of Lodge. Winter is not a busy time at the Lodge , but perfect for us given family schedules. Our group of 21 rented the side room for our group dinners and ate in the dinning hall for breakfast. Service was excellent.

If you are that afraid of driving maybe you shouldn't drive. The roads are not that bad but I live in the Smoky's so I am used to it. If you do decide to drive it be courteous and use the pull-outs and allow other drivers to pass. If this is anytime soon I doubt very seriously you will get a room as Fall is the busiest time of the year.

Do you have kayaks for guest use?
They don't have any seagoing craft, and they wouldn't let you launch one. They discourage, probably ban, swimming, too. And you'd be reluctant to try becuase it would be tough to step from the lawn to the water. About all you can do there is fish. For that you must have a VA or NC license.

is there a place to swim
There is no swimming here at the lodge; however, there are a couple of venues pretty close by if you care to drive to them. The town of Buchanan has great river tubing with Twin Rivers Outfitters (15 minute drive). Smith Mountain Lake has a nice state park with swimming (35 minute drive).

Do you have a shuttle service for Appalachian trail hikers?
Hi, I am the Front Office Manager at the lodge. We offer a shuttle as long as you come off the AT within 20 miles of the lodge. We charge $1 a mile for this service and ask you call ahead to schedule because there might not be cell phone service in the mountains. Thanks.
