This was our first visit to Vermont and we couldn't have asked for a better experience-- with the Mad River Valley dusted with snow, this beautiful home and barn offered a near picture-perfect setting. The house is tastefully done in a traditional style and the both the public areas and the rooms are comfortable and well-appointed. Dinners were in the barn, which has been converted into an amazing event space. Sean and Farrell are wonderful hosts and great cooks-- the breakfast specials changed daily and all of them were delicious. The property itself is perfectly situated right across from the Mad River-- we were able to easily walk across the street and take a mile or two hike along the river that was a postcard-perfect view of this lovely part of Vermont.
As a New Englander who lived in and owned an 1840s antique farmhouse for 14 years, and a former Vermont resident, I thought I’d feel comfy here - but, antique homes often mean tiny stuffy rooms cramped w old, not terribly functional furnishings, and positioning just steps off of busy roads. This is no exception. Our room was directly over rte 100 making traffic noise significant. Ear plugs and shut windows needed to sleep when we’d hoped for crickets, breeze, and peace. Other rooms are easily heard, as are guests coming and going. No particular sense of welcome on arrival - no one present. Nothing in common areas to welcome you - no signage, no fresh water pitcher, no coffee, no snacks. Guests are instructed to get water from the kitchen where all that was to be found was a sink w dirty dishes in it and tap water from the faucet. Owners came and went without saying hello, no effort to greet us as we left for dinner though we crossed paths. Also disappointing is that there is nowhere walkable on this property (despite what appears to be ample acreage behind the barn) or along rte 100. It’s back in your car for access to any trails, activities, or eateries. Though the house is picturesque, I wouldn’t stay here again - guest comfort and hospitality seem to take a back seat. Expensive and disappointing. Photo shows sitting room common area, dim, old furnishings, needs painting.…
My husband and I had a wonderful time during our recent stay at the gorgeous 1824 House Inn and Barn in Waitsfield, VT. This is our favorite town to visit, and we come back every year (except for the last, for reasons of the pandemic). It was our first time staying at this particular property, and our hosts Sean and Farrell were very welcoming. Our room was comfortable and lovely, though we had to work around the eaves in the bedroom and shower somewhat (though we realize this is a feature of old historic homes). The property and house itself is magnificent. In addition to running the Inn, Sean is an amazing chef and we had a gourmet breakfast every morning — look up his “365 days of Eggs Benedict” Challenge on Instagram! — and guests have a choice of breakfast items, so there’s something to suit every taste. Covid protocols were still in place so our rooms were not entered on a daily basis, but Sean and Farrell made it clear that if we needed anything such as fresh towels, we had only to ask. I would recommend just a couple of tweaks - such as adding a full-length mirror in each room and a few more luggage racks — to make it into a 5-star experience.…
We came to ski. It was a snowy, slippery drive at dusk and we were tired. Pulling into the driveway I said "This looks like Bing Crosby's place in Holiday Inn!". The big barn, the beautifully lit farmhouse, the well-plowed parking lot. Seemed nice. As we dragged out of the car, I heard a voice over my shoulder, I turned, and there, backlit by the warm interior light was the silhouette of Farrell our innkeeper, gesturing to us from the doorway, imploring us to come in out of the cold! I have never had such a personal, heartfelt greeting on arrival except a a friends' house. So welcoming. So kind. We felt immediately relaxed and comfy. The positive impressions continued. These inn keepers run what I consider a state-of-the art operation. Communications are clear and quick, both before arrival (online and on phone) and in person (during our stay). Locking systems are easy and personalized, even if you come in late, as some in our party did, accessing their room and navigating the house was easy. And then there's the food! Marvelous dinners, with house-made ingredients - Sean's salad dressing (orange infused olive oil) and a yummy pepper sauce. Don't miss the Seanbalaya (the chef's version of Jambalaya). And, at breakfast, he has special sausage patties as well as tasty omelettes made to order. OK, there must be something amiss with this place, right? Well, there is. There is a dog. Bene is a 1 1/2 year old puppy, A pain, right? An indulgence of the inn keepers that we will just have to put up with, right? Well, yeah, that's what I thought when I first met this lumbering Black Lab / Hound Dog mix breed. He, of course, was far from a pain. He is a wonder! Well behaved, beautiful, friendly, and truthfully, well trained. He sits and waits when told to - even by a stranger. And, he curls up in his chair after greeting you. I couldn't believe it and fell in love with him. Great company for a walk in the fields and up the hill! Go and visit The 1824 Inn. Worth a trip in itself. We came to ski, and that too was great, but, The 1824 Inn was wonderful and comfortable in so many ways, I know I will be back in all seasons!…
Our first visit - this place immaculate- clean, fresh, bright with a tasteful “country” decor ... hits all the right notes and none of them too hard. The owners, Sean and Farrell, are super friendly and custom cook you delicious breakfasts and are happy to accommodate special requests. They have modern communications and locking systems so it’s easy even if you come in late. Don’t expect spa showers and individual climate control but I can’t say enough good things about this place. And in this time of hyper awareness around disinfecting I’ll add that they actually sterilize the rooms using an ozone machine. We saw the machine on our way out and the owner told us how he learned about ozone sterilization when he was in the wine business. Very cool!
We very much enjoyed our three nights at this beautiful inn. The owners were friendly and very welcoming. Our two rooms were spacious and comfortable, plus the breakfasts were amazing. Highly recommended!
Oh my goodness what an amazing find! This little gem was worth every penny. The charming rooms were inviting and warm. The meals were absolutely delicious. The staff was on hand to help with every little request that my girlfriend and I came up with. We enjoyed sledding on their hill and taking in the sites around the grounds. I feel like everyone that travels into this area should stay a night or two, they won't regret it...
1824 House was such a magical place. My husband and I stayed there for 2 nights - coming in on Christmas day. After a very long day of traveling, we arrived at the Inn, which a note to text or call Kathleen (the Innkeeper) to check-in. She was prompt and arrived in minutes; mind you this is Christmas day! She was so kind, offered us a cup of warm butternut squash soup (so delicious!) She showed us around and to our room. We asked to upgrade our room to something with a tub if available; we were in luck, as we were the only couple staying there that night and were treated like royalty! We stayed in the Chittenden vs the Addison room; which was a bit larger. There was snow on the ground, and Kathleen has sleds you can borrow for their sledding hill. Warning - if you have kids, they won't want to leave, it's so much fun! There is a lovely fireplace in one of the many common areas, always pastries and hot dinks in the kitchen, and small places to get away. Breakfast is served 830-930 and it is to die for! I don't know if everyone in VT can cook like Kathleen, but everything there was so good! In a nutshell - 1824 House is like staying at an old friends house. With a wedding barn; fall foliage wedding? Yes please! This was the highlight of our trip, and I would love to go back!…
While we only stayed one night, we enjoyed ourselves very much so. Both the owner and innkeeper were most hospitable. There are ample rooms to be able to wander around in and relax. Waitsfield is a great location as long as you have a car. There is a well supplied wall of brochures of things to do in the Mad River Glen and Kathleen is quite knowledgeable of things to do in the area. Breakfast was both delicious and hearty. Would definitely stay again if in the area. There’s also a nice short walking trail right across the way for a stroll for those interested.
Beautiful house and grounds. The room was pleasant and quiet with a very comfortable bed. Our host was welcoming and very friendly. Breakfast was generous and prepared well. The house is comfortable and well decorated. We only stayed one night but hope to stay longer next time.
