The 14th Chicken made our little summer trip up to Vermont from Boston more incredible than we could've imagined! Todd & Val were incredibly accommodating, serving a 3-course vegetarian breakfast with stunning presentation & fresh from-the-property ingredients. The b&b was both modern and warm; it has a view with no light pollution, so we were able to see the Milky Way and shooting stars at night. Our room was beautiful and clean, and the premises made for a fun walk around with chickens, bocce, and a gorgeous garden. A stay here is worthwhile (ask about the wild origin story of the real 14th chicken herself!)

This is a long-overdue second review for the 14th Chicken. We stayed here about a year ago, but it was a memorable experience! Todd and Val tend to a remarkable B&B with delightful decor and exceptional meals (treat yourself and book a dinner). Underhill is a great location for day hikes and we appreciated and enjoyed recommendations for dinner in Richmond.
Our first night in town was totally bonkers. Our car died in Burlington and we caught a midnight Uber out to Underhill. It was restorative to roll in and find cookies waiting for us up in the common area. The next day we were able to conjure up a last minute repair and Todd took a chunk out of his afternoon to drive us back out to Burlington instead of having us call a car service. We really appreciated the gesture; they treat their guests with empathy and kindness. Did I mention that the cooking is fantastic?

What a great place to get-a-way and recharge. The B&B was conveniently located to Burlington, Essex and Jericó. Directions were well explained. Could not have asked for a more hospitable couple. They were very attentive to our requests and communicated amazingly. We loved the spacious & bright room. The room has a small fridge and a coffee bar with a Nespresso. Not having a TV was very nice to keep it peaceful and cut down on the “noise”. Coming from Texas I appreciated the towel warmer on the cold nights after showering. We had breakfast on the little patio that overlooked the valley. The breakfasts were so VERY tasty. They even went out of their way to go pick some apples for us that we saw hanging on an apple tree. Mark & Kim were great hosts. We hope to come back soon!

My husband & I are in our 40s, and we are just your average God-fearing Americans dreaming of seeing Fall Color in VT in a romantic spot, as we've only been married for 1 1/2 yrs. This was our 1st time to VT & our 1st time@a B&B (although we have both traveled extensively, and stayed in hundreds of lodgings.) We live in FL, and had saved our $ & were greatly looking forward to this vacation.
As I was booking 3 nights on the ph w/the owner, Laure, someone else booked the 2nd night online, which was a fluke, HOWEVER, after calling every hotel & B&B in a 40-mile radius, I nor Laure could find a place for us to stay for that middle night.
SO.....She kindly offered for us to stay in their own private home-portion of the property.
Now my husband & I are very private people & we normally wouldn't feel comfortable with that arrangement.
But after discussing it, we said yes, because frankly we had no other choice.
Laure said it would still be $160/night, which was fine.
The many emails from Laure reminding us what a huge favor she was doing for us & threatening at one point to cancel our reservation if she didn't get an email response by 6 pm one night for a question she'd asked should've been red flags. But she has a strong French accent that was quite charming & I just thought she must be a "take-charge" woman, so I let it go.
Plus we'd read the reviews here & were SO excited to sample a bit of French/German cuisine/customs.
Our room was beautifully decorated, and the view we awoke too was gorgeous. We hit the Fall Colors at their peak! Breakfast was quite good & very fun to sample the jams & breads, etc. Laure pays excellent attention to detail & she is an immaculately clean woman. The place is spotless. We were already planning our next trip back & saying how this may possibly be one of our favorite vacations ever!
The second night, Laure transferred our bedding to their own PERSONAL bed, in their bedroom upstairs. Yes, this was a bit scary & awkward, but we were all kind to each other, and we were just thankful for a place to stay on the premises.
Now, just so you can picture the vibe here, there are art-reproductions of nudes on nearly every wall. Nude women pleasuring themselves, nude couples being intimate -And it's "art," and we're okay w/it, AND Laure offered for us both to use the clawfoot bathtub in their room, AND when we had arrived after 7 pm from sightseeing & apologized, Laure said, "That's fine,....I'm not your mother!" :), AND she had a big book of "Eroto-something" on her bookshelf,.....SO all this is to say that we had a very "Open European Vibe" to all things romanitic or sexual.
We slept well in the bed in their private quarters. The home is a loft-style w/an open wall overlooking the downstairs, so we could see the lights turned on at 6:30 a.m. when Laure began cooking breakfast, and we could hear her & her husband speaking French & banging pots & pans (but trying to be considerate & quiet), and we heard their opera music playing. All that was fine, as she'd told us she'd be up early. My husband & I laid upstairs in the bed listening to all this and we said, "Isn't this so surreal? How did we find ourselves here? How cool is this?" And then, we slooooooowly & silently made love. Yes, you read that right. We did not make a peep. And when we got up to pack, we noticed a 3" spot on the bed, slightly tinged with pink. OMGosh!! We sort of panicked & I got a washclothe & scrubbed the spot clean & checked the mattress underneath & thank God it was clean. But my husband said we'd better just mention it to Laure, embarrassing as it was, because it was her own private bed.
So we went downstairs & I said, "I got a small spot on the sheets, but I scrubbed it clean & I am so sorry!" She was gracious & said, "Oh, no problem! Go out and relax & wait for me to bring your breakfast." -Ahhhh......Okay. Good. So we went & seated ourselves in the breakfast room, where another party of about 10 was also eating already.
Laure came to our table & once again I profusely complimented her food, her home, her decor & thanked her so much for accomodating us for that one night. She replied, "Thank you. I only wish you had not done what you did this morning." -Of course my immediate thought was that she wished I hadn't troubled to scrub a spot that was HER job to clean.
I said, "What do you mean?" She said, "Oh, you know EXACTLY what I mean. Or do I need to get explicit in front of all these people??! You don't want me to get any angrier that I already am! " I said, "What??" "You made LOVE, in our home, and we HEARD you!" I said, "You did NOT hear us. We couldn't even hear ourselves, and besides that, it's really none of your business! You opened your bed to the public and the same rules should apply unless you tell us otherwise. Why didn't you protect your mattress? I could've been a bed-wetter for all you know."
She said, "It would be different if we were friends, but we are not. Would you like me to contact my brother who is an attorney & sue you for Indecent Exposure, because you were in OUR HOME & we knew what you were doing!! I was so gracious to offer you our personal bed & you disrespected us like this??? Finish your breakfast and then I want you to leave."
I said, "Lady, you've got a lot to learn about doing business in the United States. [they've only been open since June & we were their 16th couple] We don't discuss what we do in the privacy of our beds." This REALLY made her irate, and she said, "OH, I'VE DEALT WITH YOU RUDE AMERICANS MY ENTIRE CAREER AS A STEWARDESS!" We conceded that we would not agree & we asked to settle up our bill.
There were 2 other ladies from another party who overheard all this& some of the earlier party had heard too. It was absolutely devastating & humiliating. My hands were shaking. My husband said, "Oh my gosh! Did this really just happen? Did we really just get kicked out of the B&B for having silent discrete sex on the bed??"
We've never been kicked out of anyplace in our entire lives. It was so bizarre & baffling. And what mixed messages!: Be free! Be romantic! Be free with your bodies! Nudity is beautiful! Take a bath together in our tub!
Laure had also threatened to bring her brother & some "big" people in to sue us if we didn't pay our full bill for the 2 nights. I was like "Whaaat??", we NEVER intended for a second on not paying for the 2 nights we DID stay: one night in Egon Schiele Rm, and one night in their private quarters.
My husband and I are still trying to process this. We still cannot believe this happened. What she doesnt know is that I have a breast biopsy scheduled for nxt week, and we have 6 kids, and were breaking under stress. We needed a getaway, but don't have a lot of money. He's a mailman, I'm a teacher. We're married & in love and wanted to make love on our romantic B&B vacation. We thought we were being considerate by being silent.
We flew all the way from FL, went to great lengths to make arrangements with both our jobs, childcare, pet-care, etc,.,. and this was a heartbreaking dissapointment.
We are about the nicest, most easy-going ppl. I cannot imagine what would happen were Laure to encounter slobs, or ppl who have loud sex, or ppl who complain even slightly about ANYthing!
One word about Laure's husband. He was like the Grinch'es poor little dog. He seemed super-sweet & he seems to quake in fear at Laure's ....disposition. He's a French pastry maker, and his croissants were buttery & flaky & delicious. Laure's "German" breads however, were like hard flavorless hockey pucks.
My advice? If you can somehow take in all the beauty & avoid doing something random to tick Laure off, take your chances. But at $160 night, it's a drama-filled gamble.

Mr. and Mrs. Fish, I just read your review. Evenso you wrote a very long text you omitted something quite fundamental; the truth. And, please, be aware that as an ex-flight attendant for me to use the word "stewardess" would be simply impossible as nowadays "political correctness" obliges! ;-) ... This being said; by choosing to be with Tripadvisor I am aware of the possible risks I run with customer's feedback. However, as long as a review is -and remains truthfull I gladly accept it. It helps me achieve my objective; serving my clientele best. My B&B reflects art and artists from around the world. Art(istic) displaying even where nudity is involved is not to be confused with "pornographic" exposure. Elsevise, many would feel quite awkward on seeing a painting of Adam and Eve standing under the tree quite "naturally" exposed. Your behavior was indecent and offensive. Maybe for some the belief is they can conduct themself everywhere the same they do at their private home. But in world where so many need to be living and sharing a planet together certain rules have to apply to avoid chaos. But foremost; one has to put away cultural differences and racial prejudices even when not in agreement with the rules. Paying for an accomodation or a service does not mean a person can allow itself to indulge in all its "urges". And, exposing yourself having sex in public is definately an urge to keep under control. It pains me to have to respond to you publicly and exposing matters. But because you opted to go online writing your version of the story I simply cannot have my husband, business, personal name and cultural backgrounds being dirtied in such way. Lets let the reader be its own judge on what could have been a very easy to be avoided exchange. Still so, wishing you all the best.

This is an atypical bed and breakfast to say the least. From the website, I knew the architectural style was modern and rather industrial but I was willing to try something a bit out of the ordinary. The rooms are minimalistic, with concrete style flooring. Did not care for the open shower concept, as the water sprayed out creating a mess. The view is definitely gorgeous, however, with the mosquitoes it was difficult to enjoy the outdoors. Driving to the B&B took longer than anticipated as the road turns unpaved and bumpy; the place is located aways from the main road. If you want isolation, then this is the place for you!
The owner is arrogant and makes off-putting comments, that in itself makes you feel uncomfortable. I did note several reviewers mentioned the small portion sizes and I'd have to agree,VERY small. The website boasts a full gourmet breakfast and shows a plate with plenty of breads with several juices. However, not so...on the table was one roll, one biscuit and something else - apparently for two to share. Coffee and a veggie smoothie, no juices offered. She went to great lengths to describe the process of producing the food; which was too much rhetoric. The food was good though and it was nice to have entree choices.
I understand what she is trying to accomplish here. However, her arrogance was a turn off. Not the place for me. Next time in Vermont, my b&b choice will be a cozy, warm atmosphere and a real gourmet breakfast.

Bonjour Vintagejunge, Thank you for your review. I read your lines carefully. Including on the mosquitoes and the unpaved bumpy... dirt roads. I am confused about what you claim about the breakfast, though. Other reviews reflect the facts. On the portion being too small for you, it is of course discussable. About who and what arrogant is: forgive me for laughing when I say this but I am from Paris, France. And Frenchies are said to be arrogant, no? But aren't we easily forgiven because of centuries of savoir-faire, élégance, légèreté, and our frank speaking. La Vie En Rose -easy to find when one knows where -and how to look for it. Wishing you the best, Laure.

I was very impressed by the website, photos, and the reviews. I was ready to book a long four night stay, when I realized the site did not mention the rooms having A/C. Considering that it is August and that, according to weather.com, there would be warm humid weather with rain for some of our stay, I emailed the proprietor to ask if there was A/C. Laure responded that there was no A/C, so I emailed her back asking if she could tell me if it feels humid despite her email that said it is a spot with some altitude and cooler there (she didn't mention in comparison to where), and they have ceiling fans (also not mentioned on her website). In the meantime my daughter had called her and asked the A/C question as well. Laure then appears to have seen my follow up email and decided to called my daughter's cell phone looking for me. She left a message in a clearly annoyed tone of voice, saying that she can't predict the weather (neither of us asked her to), that she runs a luxury bed and breakfast (apparently that doesn't prevent her being rude on the phone), and that she didn't have time to answer any more emails or questions. I like to make an informed travel decisions and spend my money wisely. If the proprietor doesn't have time to answer a prospective customers questions, how does she expect people to have confidence that I'll be treated well once they are customers? I did email her back apologizing for any confusion since my daughter didn't realize that I had emailed, but I received no response. She lost out on a four night booking for an empty room simply because she couldn't be bothered to answer a potential guest's question and be gracious and polite on the phone.

Hello Clara, I do respond to every review I receive. Altogether I have 48 with TripAdvisor. 44 are excellent. 2 very good. I shall answer yours sticking to the facts. I answered your first email about the air conditioning. I gave the same answer to your daughter who called me the following day on the same issue. After such, another email came asking me about rain coming-up during the dates you were looking to stay. Asking how high the humidity would get in the room when it rained. How long I thought the rain would last. Quite frankly; can such be answered? Clara, a business owner can only do so much. And as a potential paying consumer that I am on a daily basis I always try to keep in mind that polite behavior and respect do run both ways. The best to you! Laure

We spend one night at "The European Artist B&B" and it was amazing! It's a very romantic and artistic place. Our room was quiet, clean and beautifully decorated. The dining room upstairs was relaxing and charming with breathtaking views and the home-made french breakfast was DELICIOUS! We really enjoyed our weekend there, we highly recommend it.
Merci Laure and Jean-Marie!

+1
A gem in the VT mountains. The modern architecture, the very detail oriented rooms and bathrooms will leave you in Awe. The food is beyond excellent and so very authentic and prepared with pure love. The host Laure is an incredibly amazing, giving and über talented lady. Staying here was a true delight and we are already booking our next weekend for the leaf peeping season!
It was so great to see something so very different than the norm. Also the most comfortable bed and the cleanest B&B I have ever stayed in.
Merci, Danke Claudia

Bis dahin; alles beste! Laure.
