This charming and historic inn has been carefully upgraded to reflect the modern tastes for finer things in life; spacious rooms, comfy down beds, an on-site spa, pond, fire pit, pool, and gorgeous lawns makes this place straight out of a movie. The “Tavern” bar is well-stocked with favorites and the Artisan restaurant offers everything fresh from the farms and back gardens. I loved the large bathroom in our room, too, with its soaking tub AND separate shower - perfect for cleaning off after a day at the river and then falling into bed for a cozy sleep. The complimentary breakfast isn’t your classic hotel continental; this seated meal has a broad range of farm to table options of fresh breakfasts. Famed chef Erin Bevan is exceptional, and absolutely passionate about sustainability and the farm to table community. Being in Vermont, surrounded by farms they’ve partnered with, you know you’re getting the freshest food possible. Erin is known for stopping by the farm stand on her way in to work and picking up whatever strikes her fancy! When it came time for dinner we opted for a broad range of plates; I got the super food salad while my sister had the artichoke tart to start. For the main we tried the goat cheese gnocchi and a side of asparagus saffron couscous. Everything was so exceptionally delicious! When it came time to end our stay at the Four Columns Inn it was like saying goodbye to family; everyone had been so welcoming and friendly. I can’t wait to head back again!

Recently returned from a fun girls weekend at the Four Columns Inn. What a picturesque, quintessential New England spot! We enjoyed a low-key couple of days, but took full advantage of a great local yoga class, nearby hiking spot, and the lovely grounds at the Inn. My room was beautiful -- with a big standalone tub and a two-sided fireplace. The on-site restaurant, the Artisan, was spectacular -- as was the awesome breakfast included in our rate. All of this was made even better by the fantastic hospitality of the entire staff. Everyone really made you feel welcome. Hope to be back!

Just had a wonderful overnight stay at the Four Columns Inn. The inn is charming and staff very friendly and eager to please, but the star of the show was definitely the food in the restaurant! There is a Tavern or Dining room to choose from, although I believe the same menus are served in each, we choose the dining room because it is simply beautiful - rustic and elegant with bare wood tables and interesting art works and decorative pieces. We had a summer salad and chilled soup, followed by a spiced rubbed pork chop and duck breast as entree's. We almost didn't get a dessert, but decided we could manage a single scoop of their home made ice cream each and boy are glad we did - delicious! Our only regret is that we forgot to ask what the spices were on the pork chop as it was amazing!

My partner and I had been traveling from Seattle and wanted to treat ourselves to a special night. Our stay was started off by being greeted at the desk with a gentleman who could barely smile. We had lots of luggage and he sat and watched us struggle to get it all up the stairs, never offering to help. The hostess and server in the dining room where very nice, unfortunately when we had legitimate concerns about our meal, instead of sending the Chef or manager over, the waiter was put in a position of embarrassment by having to asking us what we should have been served per the menu description, and then having to come back to us a second time to give us the lame excuse given to him by the chef....which was "our menu description maybe isn't accurate, as our chef serves all parts of the animal to eliminate waste" (we ordered a veal chop and got two veal stock bones with a little meat). My partner and I truly felt bad for the server being put in this position and he was very nice, so we decided we would take it up with the manager the next day. Saying the food was sub-par is generous. Having spent my life working in culinary, I appreciate the Chef's desire to reduce waste, as our industry can be terribly wasteful, but you don't lay that on the customer, and you word your menu appropriately....as it is lying otherwise and that's a kind of fraud in our industry! Then there was our experience with checking out…..we approached the front desk and stood there for about 5 minutes while two girls in torn sweatpants stood in the little closet behind the desk talking about their schedule issues with the woman at the front desk, all three of them looking at us standing there the entire time! When the front desk attendant finally decided to help us check out and asked how our stay was, I replied with "not very good"....her response...nothing!....not even an "I am so sorry to hear that", she just went about her way checking us out!!! My receipt only reflected our meal (which was wildly expensive) that we had charged to the room, but not the actual room charge, so I asked for a receipt to reflect all of it. The response I received was that because we had paid for the room through a travel site, she could not get that information! WHAT???? At this point we decide we would reach out to the general manager personally through email later, as we assumed, he would be concerned about the lack of hospitality we had received and our general dissatisfaction. We were wrong, this establishment does not care! I have since sent several requests, via email, to have someone reach out to me and have received only responses saying that a “reference number has been attached to my request”, but that is it. My partner posted on yelp, and 6 weeks after the post the manager of the establishment, Nicholas Squire, has responded in such poor fashion that if I were the owner of the Four Columns Inn I would be questioning if this young man knows the definition of hospitality....not once has he even given a simple apology for our concerns!!! Anyone who has chosen this field as a career knows that most things can be defused by a simple "I am sorry". Both my partner and are executive chefs, myself 25 years and counting and my partner 23 years and counting. Combined that is a total of 48 years, roughly 200,000 hours working in kitchens of restaurants, hotels, country clubs, yachts, and non-commercial food service.... I can honestly say that neither one of us has ever had an experience from a high-end establishment that truly lacked so much from start to finish! If the manager ever decides to respond to me or my emails, maybe he will have brushed up on the true meaning of hospitality before he does, but if not, I will be glad to help educate him. In short, we will never be returning to this establishment. I am from Seattle and will be telling everyone I know to avoid this establishment, and my partner who is from that part of Vermont, intends on telling everyone he knows that this is an establishment one would be wise to avoid!

These people are quite the couple let me tell you! (although you’ve probably worked that out yourself already). It’s quite funny really, it all started on Yelp where they accused us of 'lying' about a veal chop we had being ‘local’ and thought by eating it all and then taking a picture of the bone like we served it to them half eaten would somehow warrant something! At the time there was no mention of this and no further contact with them at all – but they have conveniently edited that version of history. If only all review sites adopted the system that Air BnB and Uber have whereby the business can rate the guests too, it might help stop this kind of behavior, but until then anyone in a restaurant business just has to deal with it. These people are definitely ‘1 star people’ if you know what I mean. They are right about one thing, it did take us a few weeks to reply to their initial review as we had issues with our Yelp account, but they obviously didn't like our reply, which was perfectly polite and simply stated some facts on the product we had, and they are now on a rampage! However, we will not let them get us down. In general we are so blessed with the kind and gracious people we have visit us, and that appreciate our small inn and restaurant with amazing locally sourced products. Our staff are frequently complimented on how genuine and pleasant they are and that show they really care to make all our guests happy. It's true you can't win them all as the expression goes, and we won't let one bad apple...

The hotel is an old building that has been remodeled nicely still keeping it sold charm; it's comfortable in a quiet area in center town which is very accessible. Hotel was clean, staff was fantastic!, rooms were nice, amenities were good, breakfast was also very good.
