    Staycation Vacation
We needed a getaway at the end of June but were very particular about where we wanted to go, even though it was closer to home than we bargained for the Four Columns ticked all the right boxes as to what we were looking for. Our room was spacious with a deck that overlooked the gardens. Plenty of room to spread out and, most importantly, breathe deeply and relax during the midst of the pandemic: we definitely recharged ourselves just by being there at that time. In the morning breakfast was more of a self serve affair with fruit, coffee/tea, breads and yoghurt on off, each individually wrapped for safety. Not to everyone’s aesthetics but the Inn has to cater to this lethal virus with all due diligence and safety in mind for all. These are not normal times. Dinner was a definite highlight of our stay and dining in the garden really highlighted our experience too. Having eaten inside at Artisan before I did enjoy the atmospherics of the outdoor dining slightly more (including our second night where we huddled together more under the umbrella at dinner during a brief downpour). I cannot wait to see what chef Ralph comes up with once he is given more normal circumstances to play with in the kitchen. We have since been back to visit Nick and his team for dinner and plan on more visits in the future. They do a great job from their contact-less check in to maintaining a safe and comfortable environment for the (in state) traveler. We were more than impressed with our stay and have already begun recommending the Four Columns to all. It isn’t easy for small Hotels or Inns to survive during the current time, Four Columns are doing all the right things to encourage visitors to stay and to keep them safe. Thank you.
Thank you so much for your thoughtful review and kind words! It means the world to us that you appreciate what we are doing during these challenging times and that you felt safe during your stay. We are lucky to have the wonderful gardens that have become our 'dining room' over the summer and are the perfect surroundings to compliment chef Ralph's food! We can't wait to get back to 'business as usual' and to welcoming you back again!

  • Amazing stay
Wonderful stay at the Inn! Francesca was so accommodating and made our stay very welcoming! The room and grounds were incredibly clean. We stayed in the Tarragon room and the shower was phenomenal, in addition to the double sided fireplace that connected the bedroom/bathroom. We ate at Andrea’s Table at the Inn and chef Andrea came out and greets every table dining. Our meal was cooked to perfection and everything was so fresh. Bob the bartender on the tavern was a pleasure to converse with even giving us some history of the property and has been there for 40 years! You will not be disappointed in your stay!

    Our favorite place on earth...
When I say that I tell everyone about this place, I’m really not exaggerating... My husband and I escape to Four Columns as many times a year as possible. The top notch staff (who we have grown to know personally, and by name), the outstanding food, the classic and timeless atmosphere and local offerings (try the caramels, SERIOUSLY) left in our room each stay keep us coming back for more. We haven’t been able to visit since January of this year due to COVID-19, so we weren’t really sure what to expect. That being said, we were so pleased with the way that Nick and his team handled everything. From contactless check in, to enjoying our dinners surrounded by the beauty of well-maintained gardens, birds chirping and happy little frogs leaping in and out of the pond... My husband even came back to our room each morning with fresh coffee and a locally sourced breakfast selection. We love this area so much and we love even more that they bring all of the artisan goodies right to us, supporting local business, especially during this crisis! After a long first half of this year, we were relaxed for the first time in a while. We’re already counting down the day days until we can go back.
Thank you so much for your thoughtful review and kind words! It means the world to us that you appreciate what we are doing during these challenging times and we very much appreciate our loyal customers. We can't wait to get back to 'business as usual' and to welcoming you back again!

We enjoyed everything about this quintessential Vermont inn, from the lush property with ponds and walking gardens to the comfort of our room and the morning breakfast with local yogurts and fresh fruit. The restaurant recently closed as the inn transitions to a new chef and management team. The couple that is over-seeing the change certainly has the energy and the vision to make this a most memorable stay. There's an outdoor patio; a fire pit and a warm, welcoming entrance room for coffee and conversation. Internet was just fine for my computer work. Local area had some nice restaurants. This is a little gem of an inn and it all starts with the couple that is managing the property. I highly recommend The Four Columns Inn.

Rooms are comfortable and the lady running the show in the day is helpful, accommodating and goes out of her way to ensure you have what you need for a lovely stay. Continental breakfast was as it says on the tin; but products were delicious. The restaurant is no more, which is a shame as I can only imagine what this used to be like when it was open! My only fault is there isn’t a fridge available in the back part of the hotel (in rooms or communal area) so no milk for tea/ coffee etc. The location is wonderful, and the local general store coffee/ baked goods are delish! Outside there is a fire pit with chairs and a pool/ gym. We didn’t use these but they looked great. I would come back and recommend as a lovely B&B with “more than you’d expect” amenities.

The hotel should not be open - it lacks all of the facilities that it advertises and commands high nightly rates for. No gourmet restaurant open, no bar open, no breakfast, no swimming pool, dirty rooms and a lack of staff present. Stay away and book elsewhere

Stayed here for a two-night last-minute winter getaway to escape the snowless winter doldrums of New Jersey. Chose this place for its highly regarded on-site dining, location and amenities. WHAT WAS GOOD: You couldn’t invent a more exemplary setting for a classic Vermont inn. With its neighboring congregational church, county courthouse and village green, and set among the rolling rural countryside, the property is something right out of a chamber of commerce brochure….My room, #5 – Weeping Willow, was reasonably priced considering its amenities, which included a dual-sided gas fireplace, large jetted tub, an exceptionally comfortable bed (so tall there was actually a small stepstool at its side!), an excellent TV with good channel selections, several windows across two rooms (the bathroom was a full room unto itself), and a good amount of floor space….Continental breakfasts were more than satisfying and featured top quality stuff….Dinners were outstanding….Every member of the staff I encountered was friendly and accommodating: Nicki and Francesca at the front desk, Dorian at breakfast service and Bob in the tavern – all top notch. WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER: I had to bring a couple cleanliness issues with the room to the staff’s attention….The switch to the fireplace didn’t work at first, requiring a call to the desk and a change of batteries….With just an on/off control, there’s no way to regulate the output from the fireplace, meaning that the room can get uncomfortably hot, even in bitter cold weather as I experienced. It would be nice to have a volume control. THINGS TO KNOW: I couldn’t get cell service throughout the entire time of my stay (Verizon network). I needed to rely on the land line in the room for communication with family. (Haven’t used one of those in a while.) Thankfully, WiFi was fast and reliable….Newfane is a very rural community with a quiet town center. Scenic beauty is in abundance but there isn’t much to walk to from the inn….Breakfast is served from 8:00 – 10:00. Keurig coffee was available in an area just steps from my room. BOTTOM LINE: I liked just about everything about this place.

Beautiful inn set back in the mountains of Newfane, Vermont. Grounds are splendid. Rooms are sparse and the towels need to be replaced. They were very thin and not representative of what an inn of your price should provide. Robes also need to be supplied and water bottles replace each housekeeping.

My mother and I stayed at the Four Columns after dropping my daughter off at UVM. Nicki greeted us with a warm welcome when we arrived. We had a lovely dinner in the tavern the first night and Bob the bartender was wonderful! In the morning Dorian accommodated us with a pot of coffee to take to our room. We then came down for a lovely breakfast that included Andrea’s warm croissants. We spent the day relaxing on the property including a dip in the river behind the inn. We dined at Andrea’s Table on the second night and enjoyed every minute. Dorian was our waiter and made the experience so special. The food was delicious. The lighting could be turned down to enhance the ambiance. Our room was spacious, clean, and it had an elegant New England feel. Try the Newfane store across the street for lunch. You will not be disappointed! Fayetteville Corner Antique shop is a fun place to browse! You will not be disappointed by a stay at the Four Columns Inn!

A perfect two day treat in southern Vermont staying at Four Columns in Newfane. Off the beaten track, away from chain hotels and restaurants, the quiet of a small village is a perfect B and B experience. The main house is a very old and very beautifully maintained choice. We chose the third floor room with massive windows overlooking the square and it is delightful. The restaurant and tavern are both appointed beautifully with wonderful art and decor. Both evenings for dinner were delicious - lamb chops and potato crusted salmon, chicken pot pies. Breakfast is continental with fruit, granola and great baked breads and muffins. The inn is owned by a family who will strive for perfection in your stay. Negative reviews may be reflections of stays with past ownership. Our experience was perfect.

Lack of professionalism and care for a $500/ nt room. Questions and concerns were met with defense and solicitations for empathy "we've had a change in management, our employees were horrible and lost us so much money, there is now constant turnover," was an immediate response before listening or hearing concerns. Conversations only escalated. She reiterated her thoughts in an email projecting issues of poor communication and rudeness in writing to me. All in all a very stressful and unpleasant situation. Beyond that the room was not a fit for what we requested. It was also dirty and not prepared properly when we arrived. These issues were minor and excusable compared to how we were treated by management.

Response from The Innkeeper, General Manager at Four Columns Inn
Responded Aug 5, 2022
Dear Nancy Z, Thank you for providing this valuable feedback. We are sorry to hear you had a bad experience at our establishment. Our email communication stated the following: . Management was waiving the usual charge for the additional bed you requested on check-in day, with no advance notice. . You and your guest stiffed our employee his salary when you both left without paying your omelet orders. (We offer complimentary Continental breakfast.) On a side note, we do not have rooms priced at $500/night. Cordially,

My husband and I had the best two night stay at the inn recently. The room was comfortable with a fantastic bath and double sided fireplace. Breakfast, dinner and drinks from the restaurant on property did not disappoint either. The staff was incredibly helpful when we had to cancel our original stay due to illness in the family and we are so glad we could reschedule. Definitely would come back for a visit maybe in the summer. Only bummer of the stay was that the hiking trail out the back door was “closed because of logging”. Just looked like no bridge to the trail to be honest. Thanks for a great stay overall!
