We had a lovely stay at the Four Columns Inn. This was our second time staying here, and our first under recent, new ownership. We were warmly welcomed upon our arrival and were taken to our suite. We stayed in the “Sting Suite” which is located on the 3rd floor of the front building with columns. The room is nicely decorated, with cathedral ceiling and two sided gas fireplace. The bathroom is spacious with double sinks, hot tub and shower. We appreciated having the mini fridge in the room. The bed was comfortable, a bit softer than we are used to. This room price is very expensive, so to give it more of an upscale feel I would suggest offering bathrobes, plusher towels and finer quality bed linens. For skiing and muddy weather, I would suggest adding a waterproof mat or place to put boots and damp ski gear, as we didn’t want to ruin the nice wooden floors.
The inn offers a continental breakfast that includes coffee, tea, juice, limited fruit and pastry. We were disappointed with the selection of pastries and fruit, and felt there could be more variety and home baked options. There are very few places nearby for hot breakfast so being able to get a hot breakfast at the hotel would be my suggestion for a future offerings.

We ate dinner at the hotel’s restaurant 1832 Tavern. The restaurant serves tavern food. The food was ok, very basic. Our server was very inexperienced, which led to some disappoint with our meal and dining experience. The manager spoke to us and gave us complementary desert to make up for it. There are very few dining options in Newfane so I hope the restaurant can provide more compelling food options and improve service.

Overall our stay was very pleasant and comfortable. The inn is lovely and the staff is kind and helpful. For the new management, I hope these suggestions are helpful.

Wonderful stay at the Inn! Francesca was so accommodating and made our stay very welcoming! The room and grounds were incredibly clean. We stayed in the Tarragon room and the shower was phenomenal, in addition to the double sided fireplace that connected the bedroom/bathroom. We ate at Andrea’s Table at the Inn and chef Andrea came out and greets every table dining. Our meal was cooked to perfection and everything was so fresh. Bob the bartender on the tavern was a pleasure to converse with even giving us some history of the property and has been there for 40 years! You will not be disappointed in your stay!

We've loved the Four Columns over many years - and our latest visit made us very happy to see it hasn't lost its appeal after some recent changes in ownership.

We were lucky to stay in our favorite suite (now named after Tom Cruise), featuring a double-sided fireplace between the very comfortable bedroom and a beautiful bathroom with a wonderful soaking tub.

It was nice to be able to enjoy dinner at the 1832 Tavern and head back up to our suite one night, and to venture into nearby Brattleboro for a delicious dinner at Peter Havens another night.

The town square is picture-postcard perfect, as is the surrounding area. We enjoyed snowshoeing in nearby Grafton one day - an easy way to get into the countryside.

Perhaps best of all is the wonderful staff - with Bridget, the manager, at the top of the list. She could not have been friendlier or more helpful - and the same was true of every other person there.

Went to dinner for my birthday. We sat in the tavern. At least 5 minutes passed before a server acknowledges us. She brought water , but no glasses were on the table. There was then a brief discussion with the bartender as to which glasses to use. I then had to point out that we had no menus.
After reviewing the menu for a few minutes the server returned to ask if we wanted to start with an appetizer. I asked what the soup of the day was and we were told. My husband ordered the lobster bisque.
I notified the server that I am gluten intolerant and inquired about substitutions for the pasta that accompanies my desired entree. My husband then felt pressured to order his entree, despite not having made his selection.
We waited 20* minutes and all the food came out at once. It is my understanding that appetizers should come BEFORE a meal.
We were finished with our meals, but the server was nowhere to be found. The bartender ended up clearing our plates and giving up our bill. Still no server around.
The chicken I ordered was tough, my husband’s fish was poorly cooked.
The quality of the food does NOT match the prices they charge.

We needed a getaway at the end of June but were very particular about where we wanted to go, even though it was closer to home than we bargained for the Four Columns ticked all the right boxes as to what we were looking for.

Our room was spacious with a deck that overlooked the gardens. Plenty of room to spread out and, most importantly, breathe deeply and relax during the midst of the pandemic: we definitely recharged ourselves just by being there at that time.

In the morning breakfast was more of a self serve affair with fruit, coffee/tea, breads and yoghurt on off, each individually wrapped for safety. Not to everyone’s aesthetics but the Inn has to cater to this lethal virus with all due diligence and safety in mind for all. These are not normal times.

Dinner was a definite highlight of our stay and dining in the garden really highlighted our experience too. Having eaten inside at Artisan before I did enjoy the atmospherics of the outdoor dining slightly more (including our second night where we huddled together more under the umbrella at dinner during a brief downpour). I cannot wait to see what chef Ralph comes up with once he is given more normal circumstances to play with in the kitchen.

We have since been back to visit Nick and his team for dinner and plan on more visits in the future. They do a great job from their contact-less check in to maintaining a safe and comfortable environment for the (in state) traveler. We were more than impressed with our stay and have already begun recommending the Four Columns to all. It isn’t easy for small Hotels or Inns to survive during the current time, Four Columns are doing all the right things to encourage visitors to stay and to keep them safe. Thank you.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful review and kind words! It means the world to us that you appreciate what we are doing during these challenging times and that you felt safe during your stay. We are lucky to have the wonderful gardens that have become our 'dining room' over the summer and are the perfect surroundings to compliment chef Ralph's food! We can't wait to get back to 'business as usual' and to welcoming you back again!

The Four Columns Inn owes me $752 that it promised to pay but hasn't. I cancelled the reservation for two rooms because their on site restaurant (where we had made a reservation) had closed and the reason for staying at the inn was to have a nice celebration dinner at the restaurant on 10/5/23 after a 4 day leaf-peek hike in Vermont. A month before I googled and saw that the restaurant had closed I was contacted fairly quickly by the Inn and told that the place is under new management and that we would receive the refund, but that the previous owner had not transferred the deposit to the new owner and I should be patient. Now they don't return my calls.

The Four Columns Inn is truly an exceptional product. The rooms and public spaces are charming and the food is incredible; however my experience unfortunately was not without incident.

Issue #1: I booked a King bedded room, and was downgraded. Rate was not updated to reflect the difference in price.

Issue #2: I prepaid my stay, however due to their overbooking, they cancelled my reservation that was made through Expedia and made a new one, without communicating this to me. As such I had to pay twice for my stay. They did refund my card, but there was difficulty at check out getting confirmation that the initial reservation was indeed refunded.

Issue #3: As someone who works in the industry, I was most disappointed by the lack empathy and compassion for the issues that I experienced. An apology was never offered, and when I inquired about checking in early, They informed me I would have to pay a half days rate. I think that this was a missed opportunity to recover the issues created by their team. I will note that they provided a small credit for the Tavern, but we were unable to redeem due to it closing at 8pm. We were unable to redeem at breakfast either and instead of removing the extra pancakes from the bill that we ordered, we were charged (the pancakes were $9)!

The entire experience left me feeling like the only thing that mattered to them was securing payment for a mistake that they made and not about my experience as a guest.

I have stayed here multiple times, however think that this may be my last time.

I would like to recognize the amazing hospitality provided by our server at breakfast on Saturday morning. I can’t remember her name but she had blonde hair. Such a warm and inviting individual. It’s a shame that her approach to service is not shared collectively by their team.

The hotel should not be open - it lacks all of the facilities that it advertises and commands high nightly rates for. No gourmet restaurant open, no bar open, no breakfast, no swimming pool, dirty rooms and a lack of staff present. Stay away and book elsewhere

My wife and I went here for our honeymoon and decided to return to celebrate our 50th anniversary. The place has been remodeled and changed owners several times, but its charm remains. We stayed in the Sugar Maple room, which is the largest room and faces the front, with a spectacular view of the town green. The staff were great and appreciated our stories of the "old days." They serve a nice continental breakfast but don't currently have their own restaurant. That's unfortunate because in the past their restaurant was world class, but there are some good restaurants in nearby Brattleboro. Highly recommended for a getaway to a classic VT town, especially in leaf peeping season.

Beautiful inn set back in the mountains of Newfane, Vermont. Grounds are splendid. Rooms are sparse and the towels need to be replaced. They were very thin and not representative of what an inn of your price should provide. Robes also need to be supplied and water bottles replace each housekeeping.

No, it is outdoors, and probably drained for the winter.

Yes, this room does have a separate tub and walk-in shower. For seating, although it is a spacious room with a large bathroom, the bedroom itself only has one comfortable chair in the room with the bed, and the outside deck also has 2 chairs to enjoy the view. Overall it is one of our personal favorite rooms!
