We stayed three nights in The Mansfield Room in the Carriage House as part of a two week New England road trip. Our room was in the Carriage House which is located at the back of the large property with its own parking area, a 30 second drive from the Gate House where check in is done, and a 30 second walk from the main house which also houses Jessica’s restaurant where breakfast is taken.
Access is down one flight of stairs or from a path that winds through the garden to a semi private patio. Weather was a bit chilly for sitting outside but it would be delightful in summer. The room is large with a comfortable king size bed, a good sized bathroom with shower over bath and plenty of hanging space. No outside noise that we could hear – we slept well.
We had a superb meal one evening in Jessica’s and enjoyed a chat with owner Matthew from whom this is clearly a labour of love. The town of Middlebury is also delightful and well worth a morning mooch.
We thoroughly enjoyed the efficiency and friendliness of the staff but it is very much an inn rather than a B&B with staff in branded casual uniform and a set way of doing things. And therein lies our one issue – the buffet breakfast. On arrival we had to book times for each morning with everything done through Open Table which meant three texts in quick succession as we were asking questions. Business like and it may work for them but I got the impression that people were turning up when they felt like it. Ultimately this meant that food ran out or wasn’t as warm as it should have been. Staff were lovely and would happily make you an omelette or scrambled eggs instead so why not offer a plated main course in the first place?
Having said that, it certainly wouldn’t put us off staying here again and we thoroughly recommend the Swift House Inn.

A beautiful property with history! We very much enjoyed the restaurant in the main house for a delicious dinner and a fantastic breakfast buffet. We were cordially greeted at check-in and felt welcomed. My only negative comment is that our room in the Gatehouse heard the street noise, which did not fully end during the night and began quite early in earnest. They provided a white noise machine so that should have clued us in. I used ear plugs instead. I didn't know the room we picked was in the Gatehouse and after speaking with the receptionist, I wish he had mentioned this. Knowing it was on the road, I would have chosen another room, as several other rooms were available. It still was a gorgeous place to stay and we had the only room in the Gatehouse that night. Loved the Keurig in the room for morning coffee and overall was a comfortable night's stay except for the proximity to the street.

We loved staying at the Swift Inn for a recent wedding celebration. The property is superbly maintained with beautiful grounds and comfy guest suites. The staff are very friendly and accommodating. The morning breakfast is also very well done with a select menu to kick off your day.

The room was very spacious and meticulously clean. Best of all was the breakfast. Great food and staff. Enjoyed the outdoor seating and the view of the grounds. Will definitely back. If you are visiting the area I’m not sure that you could find a better alternative.

Just a beautiful property, well maintained and friendly staff. Stayed here overnight on our way from NJ to Quebec. Arrived around 3pm and our Carriage House room was available for us. We had a delicious breakfast and dinner in the restaurant with excellent service and food quality, albeit not inexpensive, but commensurate with the quality. Our table overlooked the beautiful front lawn. We walked around the small town, but not a lot to see except for the spectacular waterfall right in the middle of town. Definitely will return.

Swift house is an expertly run small hotel with an excellent location. We were upgraded to a lovely room in the carriage house by the very friendly receptionist. We did not eat dinner at the inn, but the bar looked cozy and well-stocked. The breakfasts were truly excellent - generous, varied, and promptly and efficiently served by the charming Inn owner (who informed me that her husband prepared my superb blueberry pancakes on our first morning). We appreciated that they welcomed our Middlebury daughter to breakfast the second day - and happily surprised that there was no charge even though she was not staying at the inn. That spirit of hospitality truly makes an impression, as does the clearly hands on involvement of the owners.

My husband and I just returned from a wonderful weekend getaway at the Swift House Inn. We stayed in the main house, super cozy and comfortable, gorgeous hardwood floors, tastefully decorated.
We had a wonderful meal at Jessica's their onsite restaurant. Like a Hallmark movie, we were nestled in front of the fireplace having dinner while it was snowing outside, couldn't have been more perfect.
Matthew the owner is very engaging and accommodating. It's obvious he thoroughly enjoys being an Innkeeper. It's important to him his guests enjoy the same experiences he's appreciated while traveling. A goal we believe he's achieved.
We highly recommend the Swift House Inn. Truly a New England gem!

My husband and I took a weekend getaway to unwind and relax and celebrate his birthday. The Swift House Inn was the perfect choice. The grounds were pristine and the room was gorgeous. We stayed in the guest house and truly enjoyed the wood-burning fireplace and whirlpool tub. The staff were very friendly and efficient, and the new owners have taken such great care of the place and are accessible and caring.
COVID precautions were taken and being Vermonters ourselves, we appreciate the care they take to keep staff and guests safe and sound.
The location is perfect and allowed us to not only enjoy fine dining, but explore the expanse of trails in the Green Mountain National Forest. The combination of luxury and nature was just what we were looking for and hit the spot.
We highly recommend the Swift House Inn for a beautiful, friendly and relaxing getaway. We will definitely be returning when we need to rest and rejuvenate again!

We booked this months ago for a 50th Middlebury College reunion because my partner wanted a nice place to stay while I attended the festivities. When we arrived the room we picked out had some issues so we were kindly offered another room for 2 nights and then a switchover to another for the final night. Thee first room in the main house was a lovely room with a country farmhouse feel, the only caveat being a closet light that turned on and off all night. The second room in the Gate house was just perfect with a newly remodeled bathroom. Really nice. The breakfast turned out to be a buffet whose standouts were a delicious crust less quiche and an amazing blueberry scone that melted in your mouth. Many thanks to Orrin at the front desk who was so friendly and helped us out with what we needed. He is a true customer service person. All in all we had a great stay here at this lovely Inn.

This is a lovely place to stay in Middlebury and is in a good location situated on a beautiful property. Very cozy and comfortable room (mine had a gas fireplace which was a nice treat for sure). Comfortable bed... great night's sleep. And I could tell that the bathroom had been updated recently and had nice finishes. A very warm welcome upon my arrival and very accommodating to my specific needs. The breakfast was great as well, and I enjoyed the personal touch of the owner introducing himself and chatting briefly. Unfortunately the restaurant was closed for dinner on the days I was there, but look forward to trying it next time. This stay was truly the highlight of my visit to Middlebury, I wish I had been able to stay longer. Hope to stay there again soon. I recommend booking directly through their website.

We were there with the snow. They discouraged us from booking the Garden Room and rightfully so. It would probably be lovely in the nice weather. We stayed in the Swift Room and it was convenient and charming.
Normal arrival is after 3 however can be accommodated at any time as long as room is ready. Breakfast is served 7:30-9:30 however can be earlier if needed.
