My cousin found this B & B for she, my husband and I. I was a little skeptical, but it was so close (and very reasonable) to where we wanted to be, we took a chance. We all could have not been more pleased. The three of us had the two upstairs rooms, and did not mind sharing the spacious bathroom. Zelia and Gary are gracious and welcoming hosts and we felt right at home. Their organic breakfasts are fabulous and you won't walk away hungry! Middlebury is not an inexpensive place to stay and you can't go wrong at On the Creek!
Stayed here twice in the last couple years. A+ experience both times. Location is very convenient to Middlebury but out of the traffic zone. A casual (and no doubt calculated) level of drowsy overgrowth in the extensive gardens enhances the sense of seclusion. The fruit trees and flowers and nodding grasses take you down to the river behind the property ... Suzanne, Cezanne, whatever. It's gorgeous. The house is classic old brick outside, with a not-quite-spartan mix of old New England and Scandanavian design elements inside. Delicate paint colors sneak up and finally you notice how carefully done they are. In short, everything is done with understated taste and expert implementation. If you love ruffly pillow shams, potpourri, and tchotchkes, bless you, but this is not your place. Now shoo. Breakfast is exquisite, featuring the world's best scones. Anywhere. Ever. Like everything here, they are subtle and reveal themselves gradually. Also homemade as part of the meal are this, that, and the other thing. All delicious and pretty. If the weather smiles, you eat and have a second coffee on the screened porch. More than anything what makes this place are the hosts, Zelia and Gary. She, with a continental sternness that suddenly evaporates with a giggle and a clever sotto voce quip. He, open and welcoming and funny, but soft spoken and never overbearing or excessively talky. Their love for the property and their pleasure in making guests happy and comfortable is clear. Yes, you will have to send an actual paper check, like the old days. Yes, this is a pain. Yes, it is totally worth it. Doubt it? Well, I'm sure there are some ruffly shams down the road with your name on them. Meanwhile I'm dreaming of scones.…
Now that my youngest is about to graduate from Middlebury I can tell the world about this magical place. By far the best place to stay in Middlebury. Canoe into town, do yoga on the porch, get cozy by the gas fireplace, cook up a meal for friends. Everything is simply perfect. Hosts are there when you need them for whatever they can do.
I stayed here for three night for a wedding and it was amazing. The hosts are incredible and make you feel like your part of their home. The setting is picturesque. Amazing breakfast too! They even let us use their canoes , which was a fun way to travel into town.
Great place. Great breakfast. Great hosts. In the area for a wedding. Stayed two nights. Room and bed very clean and comfortable. Terrific breakfat on back enclosed porch. Location easy to find. Close to downtown middlebury and the college.
