The first disapointment was an additional fee (beyond what I was paying) to use the Water Park on our arrival day. This makes no sense at all. Why do I need to pay to use the Water Park when it's included in the Group Rate.
When I arrived in my room, there was plenty of space. We had a One Bedroom Unit so there was a full kitchen, murphy bed, pull out sofa bed and a seperate bedroom with a King Size Bed. There was a few rough marks on the walls and the room was very dark. Many of the lamps were not functional.
I do want to prepare you that during the offseason, there is very limited ammenties. The arcade follows the same hours as the Water Park. Which means, if the water park is closed, there is really nothing to do in the hotel. They ask the kids not to play Knee Hockey in their rooms but give no ammentieis to keep them busy. They have a "family room" but the sign says it closes at 8PM, door was locked at 7:30PM.
They have a firepit but that also follows the hours of the water park. So again, if the water park is closed, there really isn't anything to keep the kids occupied.
Lastly - The Pub which is the main restaurant was good, but a very limited menu (5 entrees).
It was a very expenisve weekend for what you get. And it still baffles me that they do not give you access to the water park for Night 1.
We were surprised to find a view of the steel water park building. Staff insisted this was the only possible option for us.
Unfortunately on the morning of our departure my husband suffered a rather serious medical emergency that required him to be transported to the hospital via ambulance in the wee hours of the morning. It was was at this time that I came to understand the true magic of the mountain. It was not the beautiful landscape or the crisp snow or the lovely accommodations..... it was the people. I can not express to the staff my gratitude for their kind actions and generous spirits. Ryan, Larry, Harmond and many more showed such generosity of spirit and kind words, that were followed by even kinder actions.
The Jay Hotel staff made a very difficult day a little bit more bearable. They arranged for the kids to be amused while friends packed them up to return home without their parents. The Jay Hotel staff arranged to have all of our belongings packed and put into the car. The security staff and valets helped to get both me and my car to and from the hospital. Larry and Ryan remained calm and comforting while the ambulance made it's way to the hotel. Harmond spoke calmly and kindly to me when I came to retrieve our things the next day from the hotel and helped me to navigate through Newport VT. Harmond was kind enough to direct me to where everything was in relationship to the Hospital so that my time could be spent with my husband and not searching for the things we needed.
My husband and I have finally returned home and his condition is looking brighter. I cannot say thank you enough to the staff for the kindness they showed. I will certainly recommend the resort for all of the great services and amenities but it is hard to quantify kindness, 5 stars doesn't quite seem to fit.
One thing that surprised me was that the kitchen had a full range. When we booked the suite, we called and were told it would have a cooktop only. I wished I knew it had an oven. It would have made planning meals a little easier. We called the hotel itself too when we booked so I am surprised they couldnt tell us with accuracy what was in the kitchens.
Another problem, and this is the main reason I am writing the review, is that when we booked the person on the phone making the reservation told my husband that breakfast was included in the price of the room. That was great! But when we got the breakfast vouchers at check-in, they said "juice & pastries". Then in the morning when we got up and went down for breakfast (it is actually served at the Foundry restaurant/pub), it wasn't what we were expecting at all. This restaurant was serving their own buffet breakfast that cost money (which was perfectly fine!) but the "included" breakfast was set up like an afterthought behind the buffet. The waitress sort of pointed in the direction of the table where the "free" food was. So the kids and I went over and started getting some cereal and milk. But then the waitress came over again and informed me (nicely though!) that the cereal isnt included, and that the only things that were included were on the 24" square table, that was adjacent to the table with the cereal. And there was a small tray of mini blueberry muffins and a tray of cinnamon buns. That was it. Who doesnt include cereal in a free breakfast? I wasnt really expecting bacon and eggs, but I was thinking that they would have cereal, bagels, maybe toast/butter. And what I found crazy was that they put this lame excuse for a free breakfast in a restaurant thats serving a big buffet. At most hotels they have a little conference room reserved for the free included breakfast. Even the cheapest hotels that serve some continental breakfast have a better selection than the hotel Jay. We paid $400 to sleep for 1 night and use the waterpark, and they couldnt even include cereal?
That was my only beef. I usually dont complain about places and I didnt complain in person at the hotel. I was just not happy with how they said that "breakfast was included" when you make the reservation, but when you get there you have a tiny little table of stuff to choose from. And they dont even keep it separate from the pay items, since it was very easy to make a mistake and pick something from the table sitting right next to it.
I'd go back and stay again, but at least then I'll know not to count on the included breakfast.
