Several of my family members and I enjoyed a nice Thanksgiving dinner there. There were 10 of us, including 4 young children. We were able to make an early reservation and they seated our party in a separate room. The grounds were scenic and the decor was rustic but nice. The staff was friendly and the food was good. All in all, we had a good experience

Greetings Kevin and thank you for visiting us at The Essex Resort and Spa! We are elated to hear that you had a memorable experience with The Cook Academy, and Chef Marc was a great teacher. The open kitchen at The Junction offers a behind-the-scenes view of the artistry that goes into each plate and we're so glad you were able to experience it. What getaway is complete without some much-needed relaxation, it's great to hear you enjoyed the spa. We look forward to your next visit!

This "culinary resort" has definitely seen better days. The entire resort is physically tired with rotting trim, threadbare stained carpet, beyond dirty, paper thin walls to hear your neighbors conversations. The breakfast kiosk offers stale baked items with espresso from an automatic machine that the attendant did not know how to work. We waited nearly an hour, as did the tables around us, after ordering breakfast and all plates came with the wrong items. The smores given are nice but can are made on a gas fireplace next to the parking lot. With some serious new investment in the physical buildings and better staffing this resort has potential but I'd wait for that to happen before visiting.

We are regulars at the Tavern and Junction, one of the few places I can eat out safely due to diet restrictions. We went to the Tavern last night and had the worst experience ever. After we ordered the waitress returned and said that we had been given the wrong menu and the one gluten free meal on the menu was not available (the menu we were handed was the same menu posted on their website) so we are obviously local so I said I would take the small salad and eat something when I got home. When our food arrived instead of the kale salad and salmon dinner my husband had ordered he was served a kale salad with a small piece of salmon on it, no goat cheese and absolutely no salad dressing! We ate what we could and left. I have to say we were extremely disappointed and very surprised, I truly hope this was just an off night and that we have not lost one of the few places we can go to safely eat out!

Went to The Essex for a high class wedding and were shocked at the condition of the resort. This place used to be the place to go in northern Vermont but not any more. We were shocked at the at how old the place is and how little has been done to maintain the place. Sitting in our room wondering to myself about what other hotels we frequent with much better condition and much lower prices when my wife spoke up and said the very same thing I was thinking. Old furniture made out of low quality wood products covered in Formica, water damaged furniture, carpet squares that were ragged and coming up. Bathroom had a pedestal sink with one little glass shelf to place toiletries on, my razor fit, but not much else, toilet was loose from floor and was not even close to being within the plumbing codes at only 12” to center from side wall requiring one to sit down while leaning to the side. Ice bucket. Every hotel around the world has ice buckets, except ours. When we asked the cleaning staff for one she told us to check with the front desk. Front desk told us there was one in every room but did tell us she would get one and bring it to our room filled with ice. Knock on door and there she was holding a plastic bag of ice. They didn’t have any ice buckets and she said they usually take them out of the other rooms if need be. Dust everywhere and the windows were so dirty they actually helped hide the roofing shingles on the roof outside that were in some of the worse condition I have ever seen - not sure how the roof below didn’t leak.

We spent the night while visiting UVM and had a great experience! Our room was updated, spacious and aesthetically pleasing, not to mention the bed was super comfortable! I can’t understand some of these reviews as we had a great experience with the front desk, the tavern breakfast we ate, and also the firepit evening on the patio which turned out to be the highlight of our stay. We loved it at Essex and plan to return again and again! We have already recommended it to family that frequent the Burlington area.

Let me start with the positives. The Junction is phenomenal! The grounds were beautiful but not as large as we expected. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. Now for a few things we were not as happy with during our stay. We drove almost 1600 miles to this destination (my first time to Vermont) for our fall road trip to find no robes, and a room that needed some updates (especially for the price). We ate at The Tavern the first night, it was not good and it was almost $100 for pub food. We couldn’t get reservations for the cooking class, over 3 weeks out, but we decided to come anyway. We wanted a little more interactivity at The Junction (as advertised), but again the food, service, and ambience were incredible. If it weren’t for The Junction, this review would have been a 2.5. We will return to Vermont, not sure we will stay at Essex, but will revisit The Junction and hopefully a cooking class.

We visited the Essex and were very disappointed. We paid over $400 per night, and would have had better service at a chain hotel for much less money. The facility is beautiful and well maintained but the good experience ends here. Upon arrival we were assigned to the Mansion, but when we got there, no luggage carts were in that building. We had to go back to the main lobby to bring one over, and we experienced the same at checkout. They list several items as resort amenities but they should be listed as possible amenities or while supplies last. Don’t expect the staff to be helpful. Their attitude is “like it or lump it”. The one meal we were able to eat at the restaurant was a delicious breakfast. For the amount we paid, however, it should have been complimentary. If you want to have dinner at The Junction make reservations well In advance, or you will be eating VERY late. They wouldn’t even let us get a dessert to take out. My suggestion-go visit the picturesque grounds, make a reservation for the restaurant and stay somewhere else.
