Montage Deer Valley offers a luxurious stay with its spacious and comfortable rooms, though some guests note they can appear a mix of updated and outdated. The service garners acclaim for being helpful and friendly, although there have been occasional inconsistencies. Its prime location is lauded for ski-in ski-out access and chair lift proximity. While the hotel's atmosphere and cleanliness generally receive positive remarks, there are mentions of wear and housekeeping irregularities. Despite the praised amenities, some travelers question the value relative to the cost.

The main reason I booked the Montage was the ability to ski-in and ski-out. I should have done more research to learn that the Children’s Ski School is on another part of the mountain. You can reach the ski school by taking two lifts and using some Green (Easy) trails, but unfortunately you can’t ski back as ski school ends at 3:45pm and that’s exactly when the 2 lifts you need to reach the Montage close. We had spoken to a front desk employee who said the lifts would be open a little longer and we’d be able to ski back, but the 2 days we tried this, the lifts closed exactly as listed at 3:45 and we were stuck taking the shuttle back (approximately a 10 minute drive). And that’s another problem. The Montage shuttle picks up from the Ski School at 15 and 45 past the hour. Our kids’ returned to Ski School from their day of lessons at exactly 3:45. We wanted to get an update from their instructors on how they did and give the instructors tips, so we missed the 3:45 shuttle and were forced to wait around until the 4:15 shuttle. As we stood for 20 minutes in the parking lot, I could see there is a St. Regis hotel within walking distance of ski school. If we ski Deer Valley with our kids again, I think that would be a more convenient option.

A few other notes that I would have found helpful before I booked the Montage:

There is a ski rental shop at the Montage. It is called Compass Sports. I didn’t see anything about this on the hotel’s website, so I had pre booked ski rentals near the kids’ ski school. We were able to store our skis at Compass Sports each night and the employees were incredibly helpful in putting on the kids’ ski boots. At the end of the day, Compass Sports had hot chocolate and chocolate chip cookies sitting by the door.

We were in a Vista View Suite and it was very large and comfortable. We had a kitchen, two fireplaces and a washer and dryer. I wish I had known about the washer and dryer as I would have packed differently, but not sure if all the suites are similarly equipped.

The bedroom had two windows, but only one had a black out shade. The other window had a thin privacy shade. Unfortunately in that same direction is a construction site and they had two large floodlights on all night that kept the room looking like midday. We complained to the front desk and they had a blackout paper installed over the window and that solved the problem. They kindly offered to come take it down each morning and reapply it each evening, but we thought that was a bit much and had it kept up for the rest of our stay. There was also beeping happening from outside all night, every night. Not sure if this was from the construction site or snow making equipment on the mountain, but ear plugs solved this issue for us.

Despite these issues, we did have a good stay at the Montage. We loved the daily s’mores, all the restaurant options, the tube hill out back, and the kind employees.

My wife had never traveled in this high level of a resort. The beauty of the setting, the class of everything from staff to how it was decorated was exceptional. Each plate of food served was better than we had ever experienced. We were new to the area and planned at last minute so needed help with planning activities. The compass sports staff led us through a simple process and all activites were rewarding with courteous people leading. The beauty of the area is excellent. All combined a trip my wife and I will remember for a long time.

I learned to ski in the stone ages: straight skis, long drives to the mountain, greasy spoon lodges at lunch and long lines. So it never fails to amaze me how the Montage smooths away all of the rough edges, leaving you only with the pleasurable aspects of skiing. (A) The location is perfect: one gets ski in/out to two chair lifts. (B) Compass Sports, the on-property rental shop offers an astounding range of equipment –e.g., Kastle skis– with expert boot fitters (all of whom seem to Kiwis). They also warm your boots over night and have staff available to help you put them on and take them off. (C) The restaurants all offer hearty, high quality food. Service can be a little jittery at the beginning of the season as the serving team settles in, but the food is always terrific. However, more healthy options would be welcome.

As to the hotel itself, it’s sort of the ultimate in the large, North American experiences. We’ve stayed at comparable Four Seasons, Fairmonts and the Stein Eriksen. We find the Montage to offer the best overall experience. The basic rooms are very comfortable and appropriate for managing ski gear. The suites are even more comfortable. The presence of a full gym, lap pool, and spa make non-skiing hours highly pleasurable. And the service is exemplary, particularly under the leadership of Sean, the hotel general manager who joined a little over a year ago.

The only downside is the price. You pay top dollar. You also receive a lot of bang for your buck. We’ve made multiple visits to the property already and look forward to many more in the future.

Let me start by saying that I RARELY write reviews, however, in this instance it is definitely warranted. For more than 20 years, we generally stay in 5 star hotels when we travel. This experience comes with a level of expectation. From the minute we checked in, Montage clearly failed to meet 5 star expectations.
Three days prior to our arrival, I received an email from the Montage detailing our 3 night stay, including a complimentary upgrade of room from a King to a King suite with fire pit. Upon arrival, we were given a handicapped accessible junior suite and told to be happy with this upgrade. I specifically asked and confirmed that the room had a standard shower set up and NOT grab rails and hand held shower head. I was then told that there was no other room available in the hotel even if we wanted the standard King that we booked! When arriving at the room, we discovered a tub with 6 grab bars and a hand held shower head! The rod for the shower head was too short for my husband to stand under! Shower pressure was non existent!
Upon arrival to check out, the following was reported:
1. a/c was not functioning properly on night 1. When I called to address, there were no apologies. Simply told that it would be reported.
2. Light bulb did not work in shower
3. Toilet ran for over 2 days and nights! The second time that engineering showed up, they finally replaced the necessary part after explaining that we called twice over two days to report.
4. No sports channels worked on the TV. We were told that the hotel was in contract negotiations with the cable company
5. No honor bar, coffee pot or snack in room. Very plain and worn. Room was tired and need refresh! Towels were thin and felt old.
We have stayed in this hotel several times over the years. So sad to see how much it has declined.

I recently spent a week at this hotel with my girlfriend, and overall, the experience was a mix of highs and lows. Stay there and have all meals outside the property.

Pros:

Beautiful Hotel & Comfortable Rooms: The hotel itself is very nice. Our room was comfortable and well-appointed. The only thing I wish was different is that the fireplace in the bedroom (and in the Vista Lounge) was authentic wood-burning rather than gas, which would have added a cozy, rustic ambiance.
Excellent Spa & Gym: Both the spa and fitness center are top-notch. I thoroughly enjoyed the spa treatments, and the gym was well-equipped for a good workout.
Good Service: The staff members were friendly and attentive. Any requests were handled promptly and courteously.

Cons (Mainly the Food):

Day 1 (Lunch at Apex): The buffet featured cold French fries, and the burger was oddly wrapped in plastic, which felt quite unappetizing for a 5-star hotel.

Night 1 (Sushi Place): I had to return my sushi order entirely because the rice tasted off. The chef admitted it was missing vinegar, which is a basic component of sushi rice.

Night 2 (Apex & Burger & Bourbon): I ordered a NY steak that was so disappointing I had to return it. Hoping for a simple fix, I asked for a burger from the sister restaurant Burger & Bourbon, but was told I had to go there in person. Once at Burger & Bourbon, the burger I received was completely inedible. The kitchen acknowledged the problem and kindly removed it from the bill.

My girlfriend and I truly wanted to love our stay and enjoy the on-site dining, but the consistently poor food quality drove us to eat outside the hotel for most of our meals. For a 5-star establishment, the culinary issues were unexpected and frustrating.

Housekeeping Issues
Our room was often not serviced by the time we returned from skiing in the late afternoon—a time when we expected it to be clean and ready. This happened every other day, despite multiple requests to have our room made up in the morning.
Bottom Line:

If you’re looking for a beautiful hotel with comfortable rooms, a lovely spa, a well-equipped gym, and good service, this place delivers. However, if fine dining is a key part of your vacation, you may want to consider alternative dining options until the hotel addresses its kitchen issues. Hopefully, they will make improvements soon to match the otherwise high standards of the property.

If you book through Hotels.com make sure they haven’t placed you in a handicapped accessible room. My family of four was in room 625 and it was terrible. The view is of a snow bank. The toilet, one sink and a roll in shower and are in one room. No tub or extra sink. The sliding glass door to the outside weighed about a hundred pounds and I discovered it was unlocked. The door is constantly wet and the dampness just travels along the carpet.

I asked front desk if anything could be done about the room but they couldn’t help me. It was definitely less busy than when we were here for Christmas so I don’t know.

Room service in the morning was prompt and tasty, We preordered every night. The valet and the ski valet are both good. Spa was nice. Housekeeping did a good job but they came at inconvenient times and when we requested a new time they didn’t come when they said they would.

All in all, I think it’s overpriced. For $4000 a night I expected even a handicapped accessible room to be Top tier. We are planning next years skiing and will be looking at other options.

I asked 2 people at front desk that if I checked out after 2 nights of my 3 night reservation I would get a refund for my 3rd night. When I checked out after 2nd night I got a printed invoice that showed the refund - BUT - after the manager at the front desk said it was a mistake and took back my printed invoice and charged me for the 3rd night. I would not have packed my things and checked out (and moved to Auberge where a friend was staying) if I was not told I’d get a refund. I asked a manager and they were very rude to me and said I was not told I could get a refund which is entirely not true. The front desk person Nick who said I could have a refund made a mistake perhaps but after he was asked to recount what happened he felt pressured by the front desk manager to say he didn’t tell me I could get a refund. The whole thing is ridiculous because if I was told a refund for the 3rd night was not possible I would have happily stayed for the 3rd night. It was only because I was told it was ok that I checked out. The person who claimed to be the manager (but was not the general manager) spoke to on the phone about it was extremely rude and not only charged me for the 3rd night but also for parking! Also he said he would email me and the general manager so I could communicate with him and he never did - despite speaking to him twice making this request and him saying yes. Needless to say I’m going to encourage everyone I know to stay at the Auberge and not Montage when they go to Deer Valley.

This hotel does not deliver the Montage experience yet charges Montage level prices. Guests dont know that half the hotel has not been renovated so
you may randomly be put in an outdated guest room
with old carpet, stained couches and furniture that is used and worn and be paying the same price as guests in the renovated wing which has beautiful, modern furnishings, great views and better wifi.
All prices are greatly inflated.
Compass Sports and the bellstaff are great but if u think you are getting a reservation at any of the restaurants on site because u are a guest at hotel, you are wrong.
