Stayed here one night on trip from California to San Antonio, TX. Arrived around 8:30 pm and was greeted by a courteous front desk person who had our reservation ready. After settling in, went downstairs to the restaurant, which was a pleasant surprise. Open until 10 pm, the restaurant has an extensive menu including steak, salmon, chicken and more. Our... More

We stayed at the El Capitan based on reviews from Trip Advisor. I was not disappointed. It seemed more like a good bed and breakfast than a hotel. The building dates from the 1930s but has been extensively updated. The management has done wonders with the original rooms. They are small and we didn’t have a good work area. The... More

I never would have tried this place if not for Trip Advisor entries. Being a Hilton Diamond I usually stay in Hampton Inn in Van Horn but it was full. I now will always use this hotel. Inviting warm lobby, friendly staff and a room that was fresh, clean, and with a bed like home, but still had the charm... More

The reviews of many of the motels in Trip Advisor for Van Horn were not very good so we went with the #1 recommendation. The lobby was pretty with appropriate period music playing in the background. Staff was friendly. The room was a disappointment. I know historic hotels have smaller rooms but we had a room with two beds which... More

We have stayed here several times as a base to explore the Guadalupe Mountains and Carlsbad Caverns. The hotel is nice, clean and the staff is great. The rates are very reasonable. I always feel like I step back in time when we stay there. We also like to sit in the courtyard in the evening and have a drink,... More

I chose this hotel as a second choice in town and was very pleasantly surprised. It was very unique rustic and represented 1930 very well. the room was clean, thoughtfully laid out. Lots to see on this property. Staff was very friendly. I sat in the restaurant and had a beer. I had already eaten but the food looked terrific. True... More

Loved staying at El Capitan! We have always overnighted at LaQuinta in Fort Stockton, but this time we stayed here and will do so on future trips to Mexico and back. Obviously it's the nicest place within hundreds of miles, so it's not hard to beat the competition, but it really is a pretty place and the room is comfy.... More

Was driving back to CA from FL in late Jan 2015..when we decided to stop for dinner, to sample their famous "jalapeno gravy fried chicken" in their historic restaurant that used to be a bank. It was a cold nite in January, already dark...we parked out front intending to just eat and then get back on the road. Entered the... More

I spent one night at the El Capitan and I was very impressed. The hotel has been fully restored and it truly shows it. The lobby is very appealing and the room, though a bit on the small side, was perfectly adequate for one person. The staff were great. Breakfast in the AM is provided. It is standard hotel fare...but... More

The hotel is located on the north side of town--right next to the railroad. It is a very busy rail line and very loud! The hotel is a good looking historical structure with a really good (for the food) dining room. It is need of some decent decorating and improved ambiance worthy of the hotel. The wine list is really... More
