This was quite an experience. Rustic is a good description and Dusty is another. I'd read one review that suggested ear plugs. Although we didn't need them, our friends who were staying in the unit next to us complained about the unit behind them (4 plex). They said they could hear water running as though it was in their own unit. We could hear our friends talking through the wall but couldn't make out what they were saying. My point being, the walls are thin. We found our beds comfortable (6" foam mattress on a metal frame. However, our friends who are heavier than us, complained that they could feel the frame through the mattress. The beds are low to the ground so if you have difficulty getting out of bed you will have trouble. Our heater/AC was an older model and…
Drive 45 minute south of Alpine, then another 15 miles east through canyon plateau mountains. to an old rustic looking ranch lodge. and thats it? Not quite, it has a swimming pool, laundry and food. most relaxing vacation you've ever had or you could go hiking and die. well I didn't die , but people do every year. bring lots of bottled water in the summertime.
We were super excited to read about this location, with great expectations of the "sunset views". Sadly, you CAN see the sunset here from the rooms, but you much look over all the ranch buildings, which isn't so nice. The rooms were IMMACULATE. I can't fault that, but the walls were thin and so you could hear the neighbours, clearly. The water was immediately hot, but didn't last very long. The Bad Rabbit Cafe was delicious and served, basic, tasty food. It you are planning to visit Big Bend National Park from here, give yourself about 45mins to an hour to get there.... for us this seemed a bit too far.
For those who prefer a more upscale stay, I highly recommend one of the rooms that are associated with the RV Park. You can find cheaper accommodations but they won’t be nicer. When looking for a hotel in Terlingua, I saw this listing but was put off by the thought of staying at an RV “resort.” I opted to go for it because the photos looked good (though usually they’re disappointing) and I couldn’t find anything else in town that looked suitable. I’m glad I made the reservation. The resort consists of a dozen well manicured RV slots and a building housing 2 hotel rooms and a 1 or 2 bedroom suite. They are building another unit across the street and I suspect they’ll add on as time progresses. Our room was a delight. In fact, it reminded me of one of my favorites, the JW…
This was our first trip to Big Bend, and we plan to come back. The ranch is 16 miles from the main road, 3 of them on gravel, all part of the charm. Bill, at the front desk, was a trove of information for the entire area, and every single one of his recommendations was a success, including a short, secret hike with a majestic sunset. The cabins were clean, quiet and the place was unlike anything we had ever been to before. We were warned it would be very basic, and surprised to find a fridge there. Wifi was spotty, but with sunsets and dark skies like here, totally worth it. Highly recommended!
