We had been to Port A many times, but we never had the coastal experience quite like we did at The Dunes. Top of our list was the incredible view of sunrises, the gulf, the beach, pelican flying by and ships passing in the channel. We found ourselves spending lots of time on the balcony enjoying both the view and the sound of the waves nearby. We are beach walkers so we really liked that the building is right on the beach. We used that for frequent walks to the jetties to watch ships pass just a few feet away and talk with fishermen to see what they caught. Being in town was nice because we could drive to restaurants and activities in 5 or so minutes without getting out on the highway. The unit we stayed in was remodeled after the hurricane so it was really nice. The staff was very friendly, and that added to the visit. It was the best stay we ever had in Port A, and we will 1000% return.

Beautiful condo which is very accessible to the beach.
We had a morning walk every morning and afternoon.
We stayed in room 409 for one week. The room had everything you needed for the stay. Beds and all the amenities were as comfortable as you would ever want. You could lay in bed with your morning coffee and look out over the gulf at the beautiful views. The condo had a heated pool and hot tub.
Parking was directly in front of the condo and the staff was extremely helpful and nice
We will definitely visit again !

PROS-location, staff, fish cleaning house
CONS-not for families, unplayable tennis courts, no W/D in unit

We stayed at the Dunes Dec. 18-22, 2004. Our room (2/2) was clean and large but with very dated furnishings and a bed from hell; I can still feel the springs. There was a great balcony facing the Gulf. We were only on the second floor so the view was not great but should be on the balconies higher up. The pool area was nice but I imagine would be overcrowded in the summer because it is small.

The reason we chose to stay at the Dunes was the heated pool and hot tub, tennis courts and its location walking distance from one of the fishing piers (Bob Hall) in Port A.

But there were problems that made our trip less than desirable. First, I had inquired about the heated pool and was told it was being heated at the time but they were waiting on some parts to get it to full capacity. When we went swimming it was fairly warm outside but the pool was COLD unless you swam in the small area being heated. The person taking my reservation did not tell me that children under 16 could not use the hot tub. I had asked about the pool and told them my childrens ages (4,6,8) but they never mentioned this restriction. Of course, the kids jumped out of the freezing pool and into the hot tub and within 3 or 4 minutes someone from the office said that for health reasons (????) you must be 16 or older to enter the hot tub. They have been in many hot tubs so didn't understand being kicked out. I can see in the busy summer season not wanting kids in the hot tub but there was only 2 other people at the pool and they were not using it.

A worse problem was the condition of the tennis courts. They were not usable at all. I did not ask about them when I called but the website said they had 2 tennis courts and since I love to play we packed the rackets and tennis balls, clothing, etc. There were large cracks down both courts baseline to baseline and up to 1 1/2 inches wide and only one court had a net (sagging).

Lastly, there was not a W/D in the unit. I think there were 2 each in the basement. This was not a big deal to me in the Winter but in the Summer would make a difference because I wash the towels and sandy stuff every night and where we usually stay there are W/D in each unit.

There are mostly older people staying there and looked at us with our children like we had 4 heads. It is not a family-friendly place.

Will I go back? Not with children, so it will be 12 years. But yes, it was nice and quiet, good location and good rates during the winter.

If you are in your "golden years" and like to fish, check it out; a great place if you don't have kids.

We have just checked in to The Dunes (March 17, 2006). Our reservation was made two months ago. The Dunes website advertises that ALL condos have "magnificent Gulf views." At the time our reservation was made, we very clearly specified that having a room with a nice waterfront view was of high priority. Although we were told that there were no rooms available overlooking the "ocean," we were told the room we would be getting overlooked the ship channel portion of the water and would still afford a very nice "water view." Yesterday (the day before our arrival), I called The Dunes to confirm our reservation was still in order and that the room we would be getting had a nice waterfront view. When we got here, the front desk clerk was disorganized and could not find the paperwork on our reservation (although we were in the computer). He took our copies of the reservation confirmation (which we just happened to have with us) to process our check-in. The room we have been assigned (Room 306) directly overlooks DRY LAND AND GRASS. When one looks to the FAR right side off the balcony, you can see a portion of water (looking past all the parked cars on the beach), but this is not what we would call a "nice waterfront view." Needless to say, this is not what we asked for or what was represented to us at the time we made the reservation. Upon questioning the front desk as to whether some mistake had been made in our room assignment, we were bluntly informed that this was ALL they had available to offer us and that if we wanted, they would refund our money. Of course, they knew full well we would NOT be able to find any other waterfront accommodation at the last minute, during Spring Break in Port Aransas. We are stuck. The general manager of The Dunes was present at the front desk at the time of our inquiry, and his demeanor was uncaring, arrogant, and cavalier, as he informed us that NO discounts would even be considered as compensation for this matter. While waiting to speak with front desk personnel, TWO other guests came up reporting that their key cards were not working to let them in to their rooms. When I told the general manager we would be reviewing their hotel on the internet so that others would not be caught as unaware as we were, he wanted me to make sure that his name was made known (Doug whatever.) Nobody cares. I will say that the inside of the room, itself, is clean and nice. So is our home in San Antonio. We came for the coastal view and The Dunes let us down. Glad to know others who have reviewed this hotel have had better success. We were the unlucky ones (at least ones who spoke up).

My husband and I went to check in on Friday, April 12th. for our 28th. Anniversary. We arrived a little early at 3:35 and asked if we could check in. The lady at the counter was rude and said "absolutley not, our check in time is 4:00". I then asked if we could unpack our luggage on the cart and wait in the lobby since it was only 25 minute wait. She said, "no we prefer that our guests leave and come back when it's time to check in". So, we left and drove around town until after 4:00 to make sure we were not early. When we returned to the desk she had our paper work waiting. I had made our reservation on the internet and had filled out the forms and paid the first night by credit card. So, the only thing left for me to fill out was the vehicle information which asked for make, model, and license plate number. I told her that I could not remember my license plate, but when we went to unload the car I would check and come back to the desk. She then said that, "we are not allowed to have the key, or officially check in until we filled out the vehicle information completely". Well, we went to the car, unloaded luggage, went back to the front desk to give the information and FINALLY we were given the key. The front desk person never gave instructions like how to access wifi, or anything to make the visit pleasant. However, she did tell us that the pool was closed until 4:00 on Saturday even though the website said it was closed until April 9th.

So no swimming pool, and a really bad first impression. It had been 30 years since my husband and I had first stayed at the Dunes, and now I think I remember why...

Response from Dunescondos, Front Desk Manager at The Dunes Condominiums
Responded Apr 25, 2013
We are sorry to hear of your troubles during your visit to The Dunes. Our check in time is at 4 pm to ensure that every department has adequate time to prepare your room. Our staff is usually very helpful and friendly as you can read from the previous reviews of the Dunes. The Dunes strives to make every guest enjoy their visit and apologize for the pool area being shut down during your visit. We always try to avoid large projects during peak periods. The delay in completion of the pool area was due to weather.

Great location in town and on the beach! Clean and spacious rooms! Really love the huge balcony and the views!!! Appears to be high on the list for "snow birds" so we didn't run into bunches of kids screaming and running up and down the corridors. Nice! We can't wait to go back and spend another week there in the off season!!!
Cheers, Tee & Dan

The Dunes offers 1,2, and 3 bdrm units. (Plus one 3 bdrm penthouse). The bldg is shaped like the capital letter I (times new roman). Although literally on the beach, the bldg is perpendicular to the beach, affording 45 degree angle views from all units. 3 bedrooms are along the top and bottom of the "I" with 1 bedrooms up the center along the elevator shaft, and two bdrms in between .

We stayed in a "three" bedroom located at the far end of the bldg (the bottom part of the "i", farthest from the beach). Three bdrms span the width of the bldg so they have balconies (and views) on each side. The also have a small balcony which faces out the back (over the parking lot), or directly over the beach if you are in the beachfront 3 bdrm units.

All this to explain how the views will work. You will see the beach but not very close from anywhere other than the beach side 3 bdrms. However we did enjoy our living room balcony view because it overlooked the ship channel so you could see the ships coming and going.

Our room was huge with most of the area devoted to the living area and the master bedroom. I say this is a "three" bedroom because one of the bedrooms is not really a room. It is more of a sitting area with two twin beds. One side is open to the living room. This side has sliding louvered doors for privacy but not much for noise reduction. You must also walk through this room to enter the master bdrm. This bedroom and the master share a common wall and balcony.

The other bedroom is small and fits two twin beds but not much else. There is door that opens to the small third balcony (overlooking the parking lot). There is a hall bathroom which is also accessible from this bedroom.

The master bedroom was huge with its own bathroom, TV and DVD/VCR. Lots of extra room in here and plenty of closet and drawer space.

The decor appeared to be up to date and all-in-all the unit was in good condition.

The living room is open with two sitting areas, sleeper sofa, and dining area. This room is also very big and one side is all windows and balcony (facing the ship channel).

The kitchen is small and stocked with an eclectic assortment of cooking/serving ware (apparently left behind by various guests). Our unit did not have some of the basics like a baking sheet, spatula, large pasta pot. There was a blender and coffee maker. (coffee is also available in the lobby in the mornings).

The pool was nothing exciting but was large enough and had a jacuzzi and several tables and chairs. There is also a large sundeck on top of the porte-cochere which overlooks the pool.

Rooms have high speed internet with ethernet cables available from the front desk. A/C was good. Front desk was usually responsive to linen requests and maintenance.

I didn't care for the building access. There are stairwells on either end but they have fire doors which will sound an alarm. For this reason you always have to come and go though the lobby which necessitates alot of extra walking if your room is at the end of the building.

This was our first stay at the Dunes. While this property would not be my first choice, I would not hestiate to return. I would not recommend the 3 bedroom for couples or families with adult children because of the lack of privacy in the third "bedroom". The Dunes also as an excellent location being on the beach, next to the pier, and only blocks from the marina and main street of Port Aransas. The room rates are also a value (especially with 4th night free)

Unit 406 The unit had bed bugs. We reported it to the person on duty but no response from management or the owner. There was major renovation going on in the lobby disabling one of the two elevators. Expected at least an apology for the bed bugs - what a hassle!!!

Response from Dunescondos, General Manager at The Dunes Condominiums
Responded Apr 7, 2017
It is unfortunate to hear this about your stay at The Dunes Condominiums. We have a great reputation of excellent customer service with all of our guests so we were surprised to read about your review. Upon your departure, the front desk noted your comment of having pests in the condominium. Bed bugs were never mentioned or reported. As a standard protocol, The Dunes Condominiums contacted an independent professional pest control company to inspect the unit. After the inspection was made, the pest control company notified The Dunes Condominiums that they did not find any pests in the unit, and also did not find any bed bugs. We are sorry that you did not have a positive experience with us and hope that you come see us again soon.

Just returned from a visit at the Dunes. Why they would build a condo building not directly facing the water is odd to me but whatever. Stayed in the penthouse, seriously outdated. Pool, ok. Sun deck was nice. Elevators from 1970. Nothing to Port Aransas. Small strip of shops/restaurants. Not much development on the water. Very relaxing but felt like I was in a time warp.

Nice views from the 2BR condos with an angled view of the beach and a straight-on view of the channel so you can watch the ships coming and going. Good heated pool and hot tub. Staff seems friendly and helpful. Our unit--902--was up to date and comfortable. Everything in the building seemed to be working fine. Location couldn't be better--close-in and on the beach. A bit pricey but they have discounts, such as check in on Sunday and stay five nights but only pay for three.
