First impressions of the Riu Palace Maspalomas is that it is huge. It looks impressive with a leading archway through the middle that takes you directly to the sand dunes. The staff at reception are extremely helpful, courteous and professional. We are taken to our room, which faces the sand dunes and the sea. Our room is spotless and the housekeeping throughout the week continues to be excellent. For some reason the tea/coffee doesn’t seem to be topped up as it should. If you use milk you are better off buying some from the Dino shop across the road from the hotel as it is a powered cream that is provided in the room. Be prepared for long treks to your room as the hotel is huge and depending on your room view (sea) it can be a long walk to some rooms. For us it was fine as we like to get our steps in and avoid the elevators. This is also good to walk off the food from the restaurant but if you have mobility issues, I would recommend you request a room nearer to reception. We asked for the contents of our minibar to be removed as we weren’t going to use them. We were told that this was not possible. The fridge was for the mini bar only and not to be used otherwise. For the cost of the room this was a negative against the hotel. The buffet restaurant has an excellent spread for breakfast. The indoor and outdoor seating is well spaced out. We always tried to sit outside. Staff are constantly available to remove and clean items from tables. They are extremely friendly. This is the same at dinner. The chefs cooking and serving will greet you. Some of the dinner food was a bit salty (sauces). They change the roast of the day every evening. There is also fish, pasta, healthy options to choose from so you will not go hungry. Definitely worth booking half board. You can book two other restaurants onsite. On Saturdays only - El Oasis. Unfortunately, because we arrived on a Saturday we couldn’t avail of it. This was extremely disappointing. The other restaurant Krystal opens on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We managed to get a booking for the Tuesday evening slot 8:30. This is included in the half board option. Lovely experience not to have your food served up to you. Food was lovely and different to the buffet. The pool areas on both sides of the hotel are very well laid out. There are enough beds and plenty of space. There is also a beautiful seating area outside the bar/lounge for chilling out. I’m not sure if it was due to covid or the time of year but there was no pool side activities, during the day. The night-time entertainment is held on two stages. The outside stage generally caters for singers/bands while the indoor stage caters for trapeze or imitation rock stars, Queen, Abba, Ill Divo. Generally the entertainment is fine and will have the crowd clapping or singing along. (7/10) There are plenty of outdoor gas heaters and there is a trolley of blankets in the bar to keep you cosy if you choose to stay outside. The hotel is costing us nearly 300e a night to stay and on top of this, you have to rent the safe in your room for 22e. This is not good. Housekeeping starts at about 7am. The rooms are not soundproof and cleaning can be heard next door and worse when the cleaning trolleys are being wheeled down the corridors. So forget about a lazy morning sleep in, you will be woken up to this intrusive noise. We availed of the spa for a hot oil massage each. We booked a 25min session. The massage lasted 18 minutes for me and my husband only got 15 minutes. The small, small print mentions to allow approx. 5 minutes for dressing/undressing, etc. Not worth the value at 39e per person. My massage was lovely and the masseur cleaned off the oil with a hot steaming towel afterwards. My husband had a different experience. She left the oil on him and just placed a dry cold towel on his back, rubbed it with very little movement and said ‘that is it’. He was destroyed with oil and had to try wiping it off himself. We expressed our disappointment at reception only to be told that the Spa is not part of Riu even though it is (a) on the grounds of the hotel, (b) advertised on their site (c) on their hotel app. The positives of the RIU Palace would be the staff 10/10. Continuous professional service. The parmesan fries on the lunch menu. The cleanliness of the hotel and facilities. The hotel is LGBT friendly. Relaxing environment. The only reason I would not stay here again is the noise from the cleaning.

Hotel's Favorite
We have stayed at the Riu Palace Maspalomas a few times now but this is the first since the big renovation. We loved it before but now it is another level entirely! It’s like staying at a brand new hotel but with all the old charm of the old. The rooms have a wonderfully modern and fresh feel to them now and gone are the old 1980’s style rooms! Brand new bathrooms and tiling to an extremely high standard. Monsoon showers and very modern fittings. The new beds are supremely comfortable with a choice of pillows. Honestly the best night’s sleep I’ve had in a long time. Slept with the curtains open facing the sea with the moonlight reflecting. Just lovely! The pool areas have also had a makeover. Lovely sun beds, plenty of shade if you need it, comfortable cabana style beds too. The pools are a perfect temperature and so peaceful. An oasis without children or noise! The restaurants have also been refreshed and are a lovely space to enjoy meals. Great selection of food to a very high standard. The staff are super friendly and welcoming, as they always have been. Thank you Riu Palace for another great stay. Will definitely return and already looking forward to it!

We stayed here for a week in January 2020 and fully intended to return in 2021 but had to cancel due to the pandemic. We finally managed to get back for a week last week (Jan 22) and were happy to find that the hotel had undergone a refurbishment. Rooms are more modern and now have a large, walk-in rain shower instead of a bath. The outside pools have been moved and are now heated. New sunbeds too but, while they look much better than the old plastic ones, they're not quite as comfortable. We got a room on the third floor, facing west so were able to enjoy the sunsets. The spa now has a small indoor pool (for those cooler days) and the gym has just enough kit to cater for most needs, including some free weights. The gardens are very-well maintained and the entire complex is kept immaculately clean. We booked half-board and found the food to be excellent (as it was last time). Plenty of variety at meal times and all cooked fresh at each food station. Massive wine list too, made easier to navigate by using the QR code on each table to access the RIU app. Travelling as a couple with no kids, we were also pleased to see that the hotel is now adults-only and this gives it a calm, laid back feel. Entertainment is put on in the evenings and, from the little we saw, it was fine. An excellent Queen tribute band was probably the highlight. What really makes a hotel special, however, is its people and I cannot find any fault here. All of the staff are polite, helpful and do everything with a smile. They even put up with my poor attempts to speak Spanish! The hotel is located on the south point of Playa del Ingles, just on the edge of the Maspalomas Dunes. It's probably about a 15-minute walk to the beach, depending on the route you take, and about a 20-minute walk to Meloneras, via a marked-out route through the Dunes.

High quality hotel; professionally managed. Facilities modern and good standards. Rooms are comfortable and kept very clean. Staff very friendly and customer oriented. Location is great. Nice swimming pools but beach is a 20 minutes walk although with the wind the swimming pool area is a better option anyway. Food from the buffet is very good with enough variety/creativity. There is an option to reserve in one of the two restaurants for fully served dinner; nice for a change. Overall we liked the experience and location is great and superior to other options in this part of Gran Canaria. We will go back!
