We were staying around the corner at the awful villa santo domingo but happened upon this place on our walk down the river- we popped in to ask about food and booked a table and got chatting to some people staying there and decided this would be a great place to spend the rest of the day overlooking the river and have a few drinks - I looked around at the rooms - really nicely done, spacious airy and modern and nice tiled bathrooms (compared to our place this was luxury) I wish we had chosen to stay here it had everything we were looking for - personalised service, friendly, welcoming, excellent food -one of the best meals we had on our entire trip.

It is a long drive, only one transport on Thursday, roads are like ski slopes, but it is the best resort for the money in all of Cuba. Nice iver, quaint. $28 all-inclusive except beers, good wifi and cable, and A/C. Raul and Fidel had a cottage on teh river - which is why I went. Worth all the time and effort.

Nestled away in the Granma foothills in the vicinity of where Fidel Castro and his rebel mates began the fight for independence, lies a beautiful riverside mountain village. Here, there is a place, Sierra Maestra, that is a happy one, with friendly owners and staff. It is a no frills, yet truly relaxing getaway from it all. One will only hear the beautiful music of nature as they relax in the porch hammocks, overlooking the river and mountains. Be prepared to eat your heart out with a massive dinner spread before retiring to one of the best sleeps of your trip. Although I planned to come for a day, I wish I had stayed for a month. By far the best, most relaxing place I stayed in all of Cuba.

I recently stayed one night at Casa Sierra Maestra. I chose this Casa solely because of location as it is about a two minute walk to the gate to Pico Turquino National Park. However, it is much more than just that. This place is located just across the river from the main road in Santo Domingo, which is essentially a small hamlet in the middle of the mountains and jungle. Unfortunately, we arrived later than expected and I didn't have an opportunity to explore the surrounding area, which is absolutely stunning. The Casa was clean, quiet (aside from the wildlife and livestock) and quite comfortable. There is a great sheltered patio/eating area overlooking the river. The owners were extremely kind and went above and beyond what you would expect. As mentioned, I was late arriving (do not rely on Google for driving times in Cuba) but our hosts had a full spread prepared and waiting for supper which was absolutely delicious (a traditional SIerra Maestra lamb dish - I can't recall the name). The food was very reasonably priced. The Casa owner, Ulises and his son, also Ulises, were very quick to respond to all of my emails and looked after arranging my taxi to and from the Casa. They also looked after organizing my hike to Comandancia de la Plata which was breathtaking. This was an authentic Cuban experience and if you are tired of the beaches and want to connect with a different side of Cuba and its culture, I recommend a stay at Casa Sierra Maestra. I definitely wish I would have booked more than one, but I will definitely be back!

This place is an amazingly beautiful, it’s surroundings and the people make this a piece of heaven that you have to see. The nature, mountains and the history of this place will make your heart want to come back. I am certaintly coming back but this time, I will just take my notebook and pencil so I can write everything about the experience.
