We arrived on January 01, 2021 and we are still here as I’m writing this review. I’m sure there will be more to come during day two. When we arrived to the hotel before entering the lobby we were greeted with the loud aroma of marijuana. I should have known better then. My sister and I proceeded to check in which went ok. After returning outside to get our things from the car and to use their valet service for parking. No joke it took us thirty minutes to turn our car over to valet. There was a large number of young men holding up the line to valet because they were handing out items from the trunk of their car to others. They were literally trying these items on right in front of the hotel lobby. Thirty minutes later they were finally asked to move and we were able to remove our items, turn over our car, and proceed to our rooms. OMG!!!!! I’m not kidding. We walked out of the elevator and was hit again with a strong smell of marijuana. There’s an awful looking DIY framed something number marker with the floor number, and an old mirror that you can barely see yourself in. The mirror is beyond cleaning. It should be replaced.I knew then that this was not going to be a great stay. Rooms: My sister didn’t have a remote control in her room that took her an hour to get after calling the front desk. The rooms and bathrooms are very small and outdated. It looks like the hotel may have done some renovations but it was executed poorly. The bed had hard thin sheets and a very thin blanket used for covering. I literally froze with the heat on. The bed is also uncomfortable as heck. The headboard’s laminate is peeling. I had to call the front desk twice for face/wash cloths because we didn’t have one to shower with. I waited so long that my fiancé finally decided to go downstairs and get some. He was handed one wash towel and one hand towel. He was also told that we weren’t the only ones needing things by a young lady. Mind you we would not have been calling for towels had housekeeping placed them in the room. So please redirect the attitude elsewhere. I have had some very good hotel experiences along with a few bad ones but this is by far the worst ever. I do understand that right now things are not normal everywhere and I normally don’t write a negative review because I believe we should focus on the positive things that are going on. There isn’t much positive about my stay. I’m scheduled to return to Houston two more times this year and I will absolutely not stay here. Derek Hotel is not even in my bottom 2 list of places to stay.

I would not encourage any to book a room at Hotel Derek. The rooms are outdated and in serious need of renovation and they also need a deep cleaning, the bathroom sink and tub drains slow, the shower water didn’t really get hot, there was an additional fee for microwaves per night and to top it all off the staff wasn’t very friendly during check in.

To sum up comments in previous reviews, this place is most closely described as "a dump". Shabby room (not "cute" shabby) with no thought put in to presentation. Poor quality bedding, uncomfortable mattress, no blackout curtains, lack of maintenance, toilets that struggle to flush, etc. And FYI, there is no room service and NO HOUSEKEEPING, supposedly because of COVID. More likely a pathetic cost-savings approach disguised as being a result of the pandemic. Couldn't believe it. Appears there are people using this hotel as a residence because they were running around in robes and slippers throughout the day. Loud and noisy at all hours of the night, inclusive of someone pulling the fire alarm in the middle of the night. Didn't make for a peaceful night of sleep. In addition, plan to make a call after you get home to straighten up your bill, there were additional charges on my credit card that turned out to be from the mini-bar (which was a joke). Problem is, we didn't have those items. So, along with everything else that is terrible about this hotel, add dishonesty to the mix. If only I had read the previous reviews before spending way too much money to spend three nights there. Just plain Yuck!

If the rooms were as nice as the lobby area, this would have been a great stay. It looked like the interior decorator tried to figure out what pieces to update and which could be ignored, especially in regards to the bathroom. The toilet struggled to flush and the tub didn’t drain well at all. Yuck. Also, the room was about a 6 on a cleanliness scale of 1-10. There were some neat things about the room, like the funky robes and the minibar, but overall, I wouldn’t stay here again.
