One might have heard of Hurricane Harvey and the devastation from flooding in caused in Southeast Texas. I managed to escape damage where I live in Beaumont although the same could not be said for much of the city. Houston, of course, had catastrophic flooding. Fortunately, the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Medical Center managed too keep open so last week I had a trio of appointments. Beaumont went for more than a week either without water or under a "boil water" notice after flooding. So, I decided to do something I felt was of little hope -- find an overnight hotel room in Houston. I planned to take a shower and wash clothes, something I had not done in almost a week. Through booking.com I found a place I could stay without paying an arm and a leg. I don't usually book "cheap" motels. But there wasn't much of a choice. I found a room at the Astro Best Inn, located at 2430 South Main St., that was only a few blocks from NRG Stadium and maybe a mile or two from the Texas Medical Center. It is rather easy to overlook as the rooms are set off a bit. I did't have high hopes for the place. The sign and the overall look of the place were all a bit dated. I ended up paying just a bit more than $100,tax included. It was a bit high, but the hotel business is demand-driven and FEMA was putting storm refugees in hotel rooms all over the region. Apparently, some of the rooms had been refurbished and I was given the key to one. I had been in worst rooms. It actually was comfortable. The TV was nice even though I was never able to get the remote to work. I am sure had I called the office someone would help but I was just too tired and so I ended up changing the channel manual. I did achieve my goals of a shower and washing clothes. The laundromat had a sign saying so and also saying ice and vending was there. The washer and dryer was there. The ice was not. I went to a nearby store and bought a bag of ice although rush hour traffic was difficult to navigate and it probably took me 25 minutes to drive a block and back. The shower was welcome even though it was hot and I don't like it too hot but I stunk and had no choice. The staff there was very friendly so it wasn't bad as "cheap" motels go. I rated it as average because there isn't a rating between Average and Very Good. Check-in starts at 11 and check out is the same. They called me as I was on the 90 minute trip to Houston to make sure I was coming. Special rates are supposedly offered for Texas Medical Center patients and for those going to NRG Stadium. All in all, it was an okay stay.
